I was lucky enough to get to try the upcoming Tape to Tape hockey, a game described as a combination of a Rogue Lite adventure and a sports hockey game. But is it good? That and more on today’s hockey video!
there's a former EA dev that completely rebuilt that game from the ground up. Check his channel out it's called "2k Hockey" he has a ton of gameplay posted there he redid the physics engine, added new deke system, HD textures, expansion teams, rosters etc. it's actually pretty impressive
@@Tony-Gunk sick, definitely checking that out, my favourite NHL game of all time was one on PS1 when I was a kid made by 989 sports. Can’t remember the name of that one.
@@Tony-Gunk That's not quite true, I think you have misunderstood some things. The guy you're talking about never worked for EA or 2K, he's just a hockey game fan who used to put hours into tweaking the in-game sliders and settings to squeeze every last droplet of potential from each game, making them feel and play as realistically as possible. He made content for RU-vid off of that and also all kinds of series like full season or play-off playthroughs on those settings, and AI vs. AI gameplay, as long as lots of different compilations/montages of different slow motion clips on 2K hockey titles showcasing all the most minute little details that usually go unnoticed, which really made me appreciate those games a lot more. I've been following him for over a decade, since I was a little kid. Now, 2KHS is his passion project, can't remember if there's other people on the team or if he's been working on it on his own all this time. It's a custom rom based on NHL 2K11 for the Nintendo Wii which he plays (and is intended to be played) on the Dolphin emulator, with loads of custom textures and other assets, custom shaders (lighting, reflections etc), custom rosters built from the ground up, his custom sliders, and also some hacks to help it play better on a controller (I think). It's not exactly built by him from the ground up, but it's a VERY heavily modified version of NHL 2K11 with a tremendous amount of time, effort and work in general put into it. And it's been modified so extensively and polished so well that it feels like a completely new and different game. All it really even shares with the original game at this point is the core elements, meaning the game engine, physics logic, most 3D models at least, player animations, sound effects, some textures, user interface (menus etc, excluding the logos he replaced with his own), commentary, etc. 2KHS lite is essentially the same thing done with the GameCube version of NHL 2K3 along with some tweaks to the player animations and skating system as well.
@@deekusucks Yep, you're absolutely right. I tried posting a comment 4-5 times with all that info & more but for whatever reason they kept getting removed/deleted though & I eventually gave up lol. I tried to post where to get the files. Also, attempted to explain the different deke branches (like the Michigan goal branch) as well as the collision/physics system, removal of collision magnetism, puck magnetism. I could've swore I heard/read djneo talk about being a former EA dev on a video or forum post. It's been well over 1 year since then though so it's definitely possible I could be miss remembering. Side note: I know it's completely broken on an original Wii but I was able to patch the rom and get it running on my Wii U. Never really played it there though & always played on my pc. Just wanted to see if it was possible.
i like how you cover not only hockey games but also other hockey media, for example ive never really looked into indie hockey games but your review goes in depth and is still short and sweet, great video and i love how youre diversifying the content, with moosehead minute and now some hockey games too
I will say, super mega baseball certainly improved A LOT over the 3 games, hopefully we see something from this team that can legitimately challenge EA in a few years time, I certainly see a lot of potential.
Hi guys, I know one of the developers for this game personally and he is a fantastic person who has a love and passion for the game, it's quite awesome to be around him when he's explaining the game or talking about it, you can tell he really cares about it.
Tell him I can’t stop playing the beta rn. I’ve got 10-15 hours in the beta just redoing runs and practicing bc this is the most fun hockey game out there rn.
I pre ordered this forever ago. Tried it once (I think it was still in a beta stage) and I have to agree with a lot of what you said. I watched a live stream they did and I really like the creators. I have high hopes for this game overall though!!
As someone who played a lot of NHL 95 and with Roenick just won the games 60-0 or more, well, this could be fun actually especially if more is added. Will keep a close eye on this one, thanks for the review.
Ha, same here but with NHL94. Roenick was just as good in that one I think. Was ~12 when I got it and didn't know crap about hockey but would only ever pick Chicago. Played that one for maybe 1,000 hours over the years.
I miss the midway sports games from the late 90s and early 00s. NHL hitz, nfl blitz, mlb slugfest, and of course nba jam. They were the absolute best games to play with buddies.
This looks interesting, thanks for the insight on it. I've been playing Hockey All Stars on mobile, it's a pretty fun game to be honest. I've built a pretty good team all for free, just get the occasional ads. Limited controls, but you have the option to train players, make your lines, and turn on penalties.
I've been on the playtest for ages and agree with most of your points. It's well on its way to being something special and I'm definitely going to be buying it to watch that unfold. Oh boy the money I'd shell out for Super Mega Hockey tho.
I'm hyped and you make valid points. My wishlist: online multiplayer (it's rare to see your friends face to face nowadays) Making your own team. For it to be on steam or epic games.
Dude I LOVE Super Mega Baseball. A friend of mine who's big into The Show, said he actually preferred playing SMB with friends since it was so much easier to just hop into and play.
This just made me remember a game on the 360 called Nhl arcade 3vs3 I think, and holy shit that game was fun with friends. You had power ups and hits were so satisfying
I do the same thing on Super Mega Baseball 2/3; make my own team with friends and family. Lol glad I'm not the only one! I'll definitely have my eye on this game. Thanks for the review!
This game is super cute, I love that it's gamified hockey. I do wish there was deke though. I also wish they would use a different camera angle than the NHL franchise. Perhaps broadcast or third person over the shoulder. More features in general would be amazing. Thanks for offering to help them Justin, I'm sure they would benefit from some marketing.
Looks like a fun unique experience, if they shore up a couple things and figure out a way to add create a player/team features id be 100% all in on something like this
I think this is great because, although the game isn’t that great right now, it has a ton of potential and hopefully shape into a great game in the future
The thing is it’s a very selective audience type of game. Maybe for those who grew up with NHL94. I say that because of course the features, the modes are much more limited than current day NHL. Back then we didn’t have be a pro mode or franchise mode or HUT. And maybe just maybe that’s what the developers were striving for maybe? A barebones but complete and fulfilling game just like how NHL 94 used to be when you came back from school and wanted to throw down with your siblings. It’s a beautiful retro game. For example the “barebones” but “filling and satisfying” type of game would be NBA jam the one made in 2010 not 03. Barebones, satisfying, fulfilling, and just a vibe. I would love to have this game running in the background while the boys cook up a mean BBQ and whoever wanted to play they go play. Kinda like when we were kids I always used to have my little GameCube station and anyone who wanted to play just picks up the controller beside me and jumps into the action. Sorry got too nostalgic there but this game has a lot of potential and I’ll definitely be grabbing it if they keep refining it. Fantastic little party game that you can have a mini bracket/tourney in.
I was recently engaging in a lot of hockey content lately, and coming off of seeing some EA NHL and later playing NHL Hitz 2003, I like that people are still trying to fill in the space for more hockey games. It brings quite a few things to the table, but I agree that being too traditional isn't a good idea. There has to be some complexity considering many of us expect the little things like dekes and other shot types. I'm definietly keeping my eyes on this one.
I put out my "NHL 17 - Does EA Sports Not Care" video 6 years ago now and I think in recent years we've seen a lot of evidence that they do ... but often that focus has been on the Fortnite-era of F2P games (hockey bags, HUT cards, etc.) Appreciate you shining the spotlight on indie hockey games. I'll have to try this when it comes out. Of course, the looming giant I'd like to see make a return is 2K Sports. Whether that'll ever happen is anyone's guess ...
first hockey game I ever played was as a young kid and it was called "Blades of Steel" on NES. These games have come a LONG way. Also I still have NHL 94 on an actual SNES.
Nothing beats Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey on the Nintendo 64. That is by far the best Hockey video game. Me and my brother always end up dying with laughter, it's so good!
You should try out snapshot rebound, it's got a small community but takes a decent amount of skill. There's a basic ranking system where you go into 3v3 hockey for a quick 5 min game. There's a party system as well as a pro league if you put together a team. Anyways great vid showing off a niche game.
As an American, NHL games were some of the best sports games in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. Had no clue what the rules meant but it was fun. The last time I remember playing a game was when Boston had a big 6’9 defender. I think he was traded the following season or two.
This totally looks like a lot of fun!!! I wish they could do it for console cause I would totally play it. I quit playing Chel for so many reasons but I would play this one any day of the week!!!
As someone who plays pc games. I want something close to nhl on steam. Its so frusturating that ea wont put nhl on steam or epic or the ea app. Granted it is probably a super niche market but with crossplay and stuff now in 23 I dont see a reason not to at least give the games a pc port. This will probably have to tide me over while i inhale my copium
I remember reading somewhere that it's not EA that ( or so they say) don't want the PC port. Apparently it's a part of the terms with the NHL, since they are concerned about piracy. Makes little sense to me since NHL games have such a heavy online multiplayer component. I might be completely wrong but i remember seeing something about it.
Boycott anyone who doesn't provide their game for PC users. We fuckin built the majority of that now-huge industry, and they give thanks by attempting to bottleneck people into consoles. Fuck that. That level of greed cannot be rewarded.
FREE TIP One of the most amusing hockey video games I've ever played was "NHL Hitz". It's a bit cartoonish and feels goofy at first, but it quickly became one my favorite video games to play with friends. As the title suggests, the game puts a heavy emphasis on checking. And it's hilarious. 🤣
For me video game hockey peaked with Wayne Gretzky 3D Hockey on N64 and NHL 2002 on PC. I don't care for too many RPG elements, I liked just getting better at the games. I do like the comedy that some hockey games bring, Hit The Ice (arcade) leaned heavily into that. It would be fun to play a game about a kinda zany minor league with a real mix of teams, players, arenas, officials, and fans, with the franchise management element of trying to attract more fans, become a profitable club and move up into a bigger league, but as your team improves so do the other teams. I would put in a team called "The Quackers" that are essentially a weird grown up version of The Mighty Ducks, who are really bad the first time you play them but get weirder and better every time after that. Stuff like that.
They (NON ea people) made a hockey game a few years ago. It's called Bush League Hockey. It takes place with fictional teams in the '70's era. It's loosely based on the movie Slapshot. The game is crazy. A lot of flights and even bench clearing brawls.
Definitely gonna buy it just because it'll be a good couch game for pick up and play multiplayer. Maybe it'll replace NHL Hitz 03 in my rotation. Great to see progress in this space, good job devs!
Nhl Hitz 2003 was pretty funny game even thought it was 3vs3. Game made Midway games knowing from Mortal Kombat series. Midway games defund 2010. Game was exactly same: make team, upgrade equipments etc. There was special powers and ridiculous shootings styles. That game cant take serious but easily fun way just taking beer and playing with friends. I would love to see remastered version to PS4/PS5.
I think what most NHL fans are looking for is NHL 08 to 11 type of hockey game where you have all those nice features with 3D players and a good mix of realism and arcade. The games from that era were just better. It’s no secret that those are the highest rates NHL games as well as the most played especially for EASHL.
Hi! This legit j happened like 10 min ago, but i’d love to hear your opinions on the Alex Turcotte 5min major penalty on Gustav Forsling in the LA vs FLA game. Love the vids!
I've always thought you should have a third person camera angle that loosely tracks whoever you're controlling. They need to take some ideas from the old classic game Blitz: the league. Need crazy hard hits, obviously the same stick rules aside from hitting (boarding, charging, etc all good) and maybe fighting and interfere. You should be able to go slow-mo when you've made enough passes, hits, goals, etc to fill up a meter and deek dudes or lay people tf out. Idk, I feel like it could be interesting- could be like playing the movie Goon
Franchise Hockey Manager series is by far the best and deepest franchise/GM mode for any hockey game ever, historical franchise mode... nearly every league in the world, (probably put over 50-100 hours into FHM 9), just there is no actual gameplay it's mostly simulation. If they teamed up with another studio who has a game with actual gameplay they could create a monster franchise Hockey game together
NHL 3 on 3 Arcade for the Xbox 360 would have some great elements for this game. Instead of having the speed boost for only one guy like this game or permanently for all characters like recent games 3on3 had temporary power ups like that rewarded for big hits during play.
This may be a tad insensitive to bring up another indie hockey game but both these games need as much spotlight as possible. Slapshot rebound is another fantastic hockey game you should check out sometime (if you haven’t already), great controls and a high skill ceiling, it even has a little pro league going on if your into that. It’s free as well
Tape to Tape looks like a game made for fans of NHL94. I wouldn't mind trying it out down the road but I agree in the hopes they add more of actual hockey elements like the basic rules implemented.
Cool, 1st step made and we have new , working hockey game, Step 2 is to learn ,improve and after some time we have competition to EA Or get soak in to EA and add to their game:)
I kind of agree with this. I think Tape to Tape is a fun arcade-style hockey game. But we have a couple of those games already with more to come (Hockey Heroes). I want a game that can simulate the sports a lot better. There are people who think the game will not sell good without a NHL license but I strongly disagree. There are a lot of people who like to mod other hockey games. So a game that focuses on realistic hockey and making it open to customize, create a franchise mode and also even have online multiplayer (like EASHL in EA NHL) and I think it could do really well.
Part of the tough thing with EA NHL is that it’s so hard to play with groups of people and the skill gap in a group of friends can be so huge, so if Tape to Tape gives that arcadey “party-game” kind of experience then I’m actually pretty hyped about it!
Yeah, it is silly to complain about how having dekes and slides in an arcade game. It's like complaining that NBA Jam didn't let you call a pick and roll play. The average gamer doesn't want to sit and take weeks learning all the nuances of the sport just to play the game. It is why arcade style sports games are EXTREMELY popular. (See: Golden Tee Golf, NBA Jam, Cruis'n USA.)
