When Froot Loops decided to unveil their brand new creative update for Toucan Sam and the new Froot Loops World on May 5th, 2020, they never could have anticipated just how powerful the negative response from long time Froot Loops fans would be until #notmytoucansam was trending on every platform.
2020 Toucan Sam was way younger, he had a mouth with teeth pasted on top of his toucan beak which made so many uncomfortable, a lot of people hated the rainbow gradient on his beak as well and the general art style felt like a rip off of Steven Universe.
In a quick course correction, Kellogg's did damage control. The New (2020) Toucan Sam and his Froot Loops World were cancelled and quickly scrubbed from the web.
That's when the marketing team behind Froot Loops got down to business to attempt to overcome the Herculean challenge of meeting the internet's expectations.
New New Toucan Sam is their answer to that challenge.
My first impression is this looks like Toucan Sam. He feels like he not only respects the heritage of the Froot Loops mascot, but brings that into the present with this fresh updated vibrant design.
New New Toucan Sam is aged up compared to 2020 Toucan Sam. How old? I'm not sure but I'd guess mid to late 20s?
The new colors added to his beak represent each available color of Froot Loops. While his tail feathers represent the original colors of Froot Loops which I think is a cool touch.
I think this new design is way better overall. But the questions still remains, did the team at FL succeed in meeting the wild, varied and often nonsensical expectations the internet has for the brands it supports?
I'm not sure but I have to hand it to Kellogg Company and the Froot Loops team for attempting the impossible and, at least from my perspective, succeeding.
