We are Jim and Jessica, a husband and wife team who made the leap from city life to an off-grid homestead in Southern Arizona. We've started this lifestyle equipped only with two Permaculture Design Certificates and a whole lot of determination.
We’d like to share our journey of starting a sustainable homestead from scratch with all its ups, downs, and lessons learned. Watch us take on the challenge of modern homesteading, off-grid life, and turning this barren piece of land into a desert oasis.

Mothballs outgas a heavier than air non breathable/survivable gas. That's why the snakes left. Thet can't survive that either. If you have a lot of mothballs in a closed space, and you have to crawl into it, or someone plays hide-and-seek in it... they can die. That has happened in the past.

@@thegoodtom1718 I agree with you on destroying the snakes, but I don't think that is an option, here. Adult snakes shed their skin about twice a year. If a marked snake is returning to the homestead area, my guess is it will do so before that timeframe. Another option maybe dabbing their head with the paint. But, we are in agreement, Thegoodtom, I'm afraid either they, or one of their dogs will be bitten.

I have two dogs. one will lay down right next to a rattler in a frienzy..Thats how he got bite. The other hates them. He let's me know when one is close. The one that was bite almost died a few years back from it. But I gave him a ton of benadryl and 36 hours later he was 75%. He never has fully recovered.. however he is now 18 years old. Oldest pup I've ever had. And over the last 2 years his body has shown his age. Use to be a big pit. Now he has little muscle mass. But he keeps holding on. So I'm happy to have is joker butt around. The other is young. well about 5 now. When the pit was bite. He was the one that woke me up. By going Ape. He wasn't even 6 months old when the other one was bite. But the pit hid. It wasn't until I seen him drooling like a river that I knew he was bit. Then after a short time. He had a softball size lump in his throat. From the poison toxin. he was bite on the leg. And licked it. I believe when it stiked it hit the bone and most ran down the leg. Where he licked it. About 30 minutes after being bite. he was limp. And barley breathing. forced so water into him before. Along with the benadryl. Then we just had to sit back and wait. for 24 hours he didn't move. other then breath a little. About 30 hours he tried to stand and drink about 36 hours he was slowly walking. And he still hasn't learned. He still will walk next to one. Crazy pooch. But he has always been easy going. Just his personality.

Remember, snakes and rodents often fit through unreasonably small holes. People repeatedly fail to fully consider this. It is generally accepted that mice can squeeze through a 1/4" crack but not a 1/4 x 1/4 mesh. You also want to consider that mice and rats can easily climb up earthen walls. Best of luck.

You know it illegal only if others know you are doing it. I wouldn't film it fit for many reasons. And if your fish n game is that bad. You have other problems. Most wardens will turn the other cheek in these cases. They are not openly going out and hunting rattler. Its illegal to kill a cougar in most places..But no warden is going to cite you for killing one that is causing harm to you or your property. Of course we will leave California out of this. They would likely give you the chair for it. And its a no capital punishment state.

@@flyoverurbangarden4315 When I was younger and stupid as compared to older and stupid my philosophy was the only good snake is a dead snake. As I have gotten older I have learned that all life is precious and I do everything to avoid them. That being said a Mojave Green Rattler is an exception to all life being precious. It's venom is a neurotoxin, if you don't get the anti venom immediately it can cause death or serious jack you up in 15 minutes. They are said to have a particularly bad attitude problem. I can't testify to that because I've only seen 3 and I wasn't interested in making their acquaintances. If you kill off all of the snakes you will have a serious rodent problem.

Oh thats your snake problem. Chicken call in snakes. No really they do. 90% Of my snakes when I had chickens where around the chicken coop. However.. What that means is that snake trap i mentioned earlier. put it next to the chicken coop. I should tell you how to make it. 1/8 mesh fence. they come in like 24 to 36 inch wide..And 5 to 20 feet long. make a circle with the mesh ( cylinder) if its 24 inch it will be a 24 inch trap. next make two cones ( round triangle) with one side the same size as cylinder the other 1.5 to 2.5 inch ( big enough the snakes head will fit through with no touching sides) Put cone point toward center. wire it up. on other end. you have two options. flat wall of mesh or another cone. Have seen both work. But I would feel better with only one cone. add a strong wire handle. So when it in you are not touching the cage / trap. Though I have seen people just pick it up. But I see fangs going through the mesh in my mind. if you are daring and just pick it up at least be wearing thick leather gloves. Now I don't know how they get them out. Because the snake won't go backwards through the cone. As least I'm told that. I know minor traps have a spring door on them.

Moth balls. The reason the snakes are coming around are looking for food, ie mice...so snakes don't smell but mice do..So get rid of mice they don't like moth balls, they will stay away. I was told this method by a professional snake catcher in Australia. Here we have trouble with deadly brown snakes. We were told to use a clear plastic rectangular box type containers with a a clip on lid. Just big enough to hold the snake. Cut a hole in the top and add a hinge cover to cover and clamp over the hole. The snakes love a small compact space. They will go for it every time. Leave it around in a covered location on the ground. You can see in the container when you have a snake. Push the cover over the hole withe a stick and secure., You can then transport the snake to another location. Hope this makes sense. Let me know if you want more detail. cheers John.

I hate snakes but I’ve learned over my lifetime to allow non-venomous snakes to come and go as they please. I am not so generous with venomous snakes. I do not allow them near my yard without suffering the consequences. As long as they stay around my 4 ponds and the creek that runs through my property I leave them be. I’ve got right at 5 acres of ponds and about a half mile of creek so they have plenty of space to hunt without coming into my yard area.

Hi guys please be careful with those rattle snakes. You are both working so hard, wishing you can finish the house so you are able to move in.

This would definitely be a deal breaker for me. I’d be on my way out of the desert. I know I know they have them other places to but it wouldn’t be as likely in some environments.

How do you keep your dog from messing with rattlers? I would be worried about that with him roaming free all over the property.

Just a suggestion, I would put 20 mule team borax at least on the outer inside floor, a lot. It will kill all bugs, even the good ones so be careful. Moles also hate to get it on their feet, it tastes like soap. I put it on my rebuilt bathroom floor before the final flooring.

Theu found out that Tiahuanaco was poured not carved. The loads of bat guano that they brought up from the coast were not for fertilizer. It was used as the binder to turn earth to stone. They did not use lime.

Those grasshoppers were mating. That species has no natural enemies and will eat non native plants into the ground for the roots. Common name is Mexican General.
