500k kms is nearly double the distance from the earth to the moon. Visually, even a ship 20 football fields long would be invisible. Radar is only effect to 1 or 2 light seconds. So maaaaaybe out that far. But probably not. So it's not even remotely ridiculous that they wouldn't see it until it was 500k out.

Look at jow hard it is trying to see a ship in the ocean during night with no moon. If you didn't have radar to find it and if they are running dark, it's nearly impossible to find. Now add the ability for it to be above or under you.

@@henrysullivan6341 2 light seconds is just under 600000 kilometers. That being said, that is current modern RADAR. If you have developed FTL flight then you probably have a much more advanced detection system. LIDAR if nothing else would have unlimited range in deep space as long as there is nothing blocking it. We also currently have telescopes that can see planets in other systems. When detected, the story says they saw weapons on the ship. The first thing they would have done was raise their shields and gone to GQ until it was determined there was not threat. Only an IDIOT would allow an armed ship into range of your ship unless contact was made and it is determined to not be a threat.

@@TheChapelx If you are in a space ship, traveling through space, you had better have a very good detection system, otherwise a tiny meteor would complete wreck your life. Even if your ship is stationary to planets in the system or to the nearest sun, that wouldn't mean that meteors would be so you would need a very good detection system active at all times. A ship at sea may be hard to see visually, but anyone with any type of detection system could see it easily.
