That's most of the Lost Levels mythos. "Nintendo thought it was too hard for the West, so we got Doki Doki Panic instead." Of course no one mentions that NOA thought it also looked too similar to the first game and they wanted more of a "real" sequel.

"Obviously there's room for improvement" Is it obvious? does he mean 'apparently' there's room for improvement (?) because I didn't see any such room on first watch. I suppose they made the ranks on SMB really really strict because it's such an iconic speedrunner game so they knew many players who are familiar with what's possible down to the frame would be spending a while grinding good times, and they wanted them to be satisfied with the rankings.
