My history teacher always ended his classes on this topic with this song. We didn't try to say otherwise either since it's so catchy. On the bad side I associate certain phrases/words with songs so no one can mention Istanbul/constanople/turkey around me without it getting stuck in my head. Which is why I'm here.

As for the Muslim conquest of Constantinople, that happened only 563 years ago. Hardly caveman times, but in the beginning of the Early Modern Era. The city was the capital of the Christian Byzantine empire and Eastern Rome for 1,400 years before that, and it's conquest by the Turks was brutal. It's no wonder historical memories are still raw.
