Katrina Bookman
Katrina Bookman had just won $43 million on a New York City Slot Machine! All of her dreams were about to come true. However, the casino had other ideas.
“Lucky” Spin
When Katrina Bookman walked into the Resorts World Casino in Jamaica Queens, New York City, she planned to play a cheap game to blow off a little steam. She avoided the more expensive machines, like the Megabucks slots with a $100 minimum to play.
Official Ruling
Katrina's dreams were brought to an abrupt end when casino managers ushered her off the gambling floor. Of course, as anyone would, she asked about her winnings. The Casino told her to come back tomorrow for the official ruling.
Nothing
Unsure of what would happen but determined to get her winnings, Katrina went back to the Resorts World Casino and spoke to a representative. She knew something was wrong but wasn't ready for the news she was about to receive.
Casino Version
The Casino seems like a bully at first glance, but with even a minor glance at their side of things, it becomes easy to understand why they didn't pay Katrina the winnings. The important thing to note is the machine Katrina was playing on.
Bookman Version
With the Nevada Gaming Board's ruling, it was very clear that the machine was busted. However, this wouldn’t slow Katrina or her lawyer down one bit as they tried to get her prize money. The argument became about two things.
Other Malfunctions
This definitely isn't the first or last time malfunctioning slot machines make headlines. Behar Melaku's case was an interesting one. On the machine he was using, you need five jackpots to win. He only got four, but the slot still told him he had won $58 million.

They are now long gone from the machine and their money essentially stolen. Yet the casino keeps those other folks money. A fine would be one option for any broken machine, but that would cause casinos to simple not report broken machines. Very hard issue to solve where everyone gets justice

How are they negligent? There is a disclaimer "Malfunction voids all pays an plays". You know what you're getting into when you play. No one makes you play. In this case it was a software bug. This jackpot wasn't anywhere near the actual jackpot which was 6500. She deserves nothing.

I was put off gambling aged 8 by my grandad. He pointed out a new rolls Royce and said that’s the bookmakers car then pointed to a couple of scruffy looking old men going into the betting shop and said and they helped to pay for the car with their losing bets because the only winner every time is the bookie.

Anybody that does research on slot machines know slot machines will not hit into the millions unless your in a high rollers room and every machine does have a warning about malfunction no pay. However, not everyone that visits plays knows this. So they should give her her loss of what she put in the machine, her max win, her legal fees, and time at the least. Maybe even some free vale room comps dinners for a year. Way cheaper than 42million and the negative backlash. People will in the end continue going to the casino despite knowing thos ladys story. Anyone reading this far your not winning multi million dollar jackpots on slot machines and ther malfunction warning is stated on the machine very small print but its there if you look closely.

They were saying that the particular machine she was playing was a lower denomination (penny) machine and the payout does NOT go that high to 43 million...so the casino should have just paid her the maximum payout for that machine which was 6500!! This happened to me too! I hit $1M but they never paid me. At least 6 casino staff came, roped off the machine, they opened it and I'm not sure what they were doing to it. Long story short, they said it malfunctioned and I didn't received anything!! 🤬

It was penny slots. The max jackpot payout was $6,500. She didn't hit the jackpot, she actually won just over $2. It was a glitch, and obviously so.

These casinos need to give refunds when their machines malfunction rather than to keep making profits and keep saying their machines malfunction it's not right for them to take your money then when the machine says you won they don't pay anything because they can simply say oh it malfunctioned they should be forced to pay out the maximum on that machine regardless malfunctional not

Here's a good rule of thumb should this ever happen to you: If the machine pays a jackpot, it's likely due to a malfunction whenever the casino decides. If you empty your pockets into the machine and go home broke, the machines were likely functioning at optimal performance that day.

Similar thing happened to me at this same casino in Queens, NY. I was playing roulette and had $500 in the machine. Every time I tried to cancel my bet the machine would double my bet. Haven’t been there in 5 years

Is there a way to prove a machine malfunctioned it get free-play/credits for the machine wrongfully stealing your cash? After all, if the actual machine has a different payout percentage than advertised that's illegal. So if a player could prove that it's an issue with the RNG machine, then they should get payed/reimbursed.

The machines can be calibrated so it sounds like they rigged the machine to say 43 million so they won't have to pay out cause if not then how could the electric machine say that specific amount unless it was pre programmed to say that ......., When is the last time you went to draw money from your ATM and it malfunctioned not possible unless the Teller computes a different amount into the account

the TL;DR is never go to resort world casino ever. Its bad enough when the house always wins in the long run, but to also pinch back the few who actually wins is absolutely disgusting.
