Why does ignore def work on allies under hollyberry s3? Doesn't it reduce dmg or does it just increase allies' def?

It takes the damage of the attack and subtracts, for example, 4K from it A 1k hit from a support unit turns into 1 damage A 5k hit becomes 1k A 60k hit becomes 56k And everything in between.
