I'm sorry you've lost some birds Ollie. We are having a heatwave here where I'm at in the US. What I use for bathes are shallow dishes, like a cat dish around 4 inches wide, and an inch tall, it fits easy through the door, and I place it on the floor of the cage with less than half an inch of water. My birds fly straight to it drink the bathe, and the main reason I'm doing it that way is because if I have a hot weak bird it's a lot easier to drop down and drink from the shallow dish, plus jump in it to cool off than having to fly to the water, specially if they are so weak the are already on the ground. I'm sure you're already doing everything you can, I'm just sharing what I do. Best of luck, take care
Thankyou for the thoughts, I look your idea, I’m going to buy some for the bottom of cages as I generally only use external baths for ease. Best of luck this remaining season
I used fans to try get the air circulating bringing in fresh, sprayed the roofs to help reduced the absorption and sprayed and bathed the birds to keep them cool. On some flights I put some white sheets on the roof to reflect the sun also
Sorry for your losses. I can imagine the frustration. Also here in the Netherlands a short heatwave with temperatures up to almost 40 degrees. Did not lose any birds fortunately. I covered my aviaries with big blankets to provide shade and the birdshed has a lightdome that can be opened to release heat. Thanks to climate change we probably have to deal with these heatwaves a lot more than we are used to I'm afraid. We bether have to adjust to that since we failed miserably to prevent global warming...
I agree, I’m designing the new bird room at the moment and because of this heat I’ve had to make changes expecting this may happen more often and potentially even worse
Been pretty hot here as well in Copenhagen Denmark. I had to put in a cooling humidifier for my birds . Luckily I have not lost any birds, on the contrary my fife fancy canaries has stated to build a nest again and my society finch chicks have left their nest one week earlier than expected. Only drama I’ve had this summer is that I lost my gouldian finch chicks about 3 weeks ago due to the parents neglecting them after 2 weeks
Nice to see some redpolls chick's on the sticks sorry to hear you lost a few birds with the heat wave olivier I never really had a problem with my birds in the heat wave I keep it under control in my bird room indoors I keeped all my windows closed and blinds closed all I switched on was my led lights in my bird room and it stayed Nice and cool all the best from Staffordshire 🇬🇧👍👍
That’s great you’ve got them inside, far easier to control. I think Air Con units may be an almost necessity in bird rooms soon, with a lot of rooms being designed to keep warm in winter rather than cooler in sunned
Sorry for your loses :( Oliver , may I have your advice please? What age is better to put baycox in chick's water? Sorry if I've lost this information in your previous videos. I ask it for my greenfinch chick, it's my first time in breeding.
I've lost alot of chick's in the nest. My bird room is a 12 x 20 foot steel shed and it does be hotter in the shed than outside even with the door left open and the window is left open the some the chick's are just not able for the heat in the shed I use a fan but it just doesn't do the job
Ollie seems like a really hard year for bird blokes lost my first round of sib bullies at 7 weeks old they had everything in the quarters all I can think of was to hot in shed
I'm sorry for your losses. I'm in the US and am in contact with European Goldfinch breeders here and in North Africa, and everyone is losing birds, especially hens this year. No one has been able to save chicks this year either, I feel it must be something in the cosmos causing such global difficulties. The heat wasn't a factor of the deaths of my birds this year.
