Paul Desmond had one of the most unique, intriguing, soft and velvety sounds. He described his own sound as "a dry Martini", which to this day might be the most eloquent descrition made. His mouthpiece, an MC Gregory Model A4A 18 - which was stopped in production back in the 60s , has now been revived by Morgan Mouthpieces who acquired the original molds and bores used to produce this mouthpiece. The results did not disappoint! It’s compared to the tradional jazz mouthpieces very different in approach, and gives you much insight into why Desmond sounded like he did.
