it's a bad ass phone. battery life is incredible. can't really complain... yet. my Z Flip 3 lasted a year and some change before the screen gave up on me.
Idk if Guinness should give Samsung an award for making a foldable that could survive a teardown or give Jerry the award for successfully putting it back together
8:59 you can see top metal slit in the system is snapped. It's most likely what made the pop and blocks the hinge from closing fully, there might be more damage along the hinge but i couldn't tell for sure.
Those stickers you removed are not for waterproofing like you said, the holes there were made to mount the parts easier on to the phones chassis. Kind of like hanging a price of metal and painting the whole thing without actually touching it and leaving a trace of where it's been touched. The holes make assembly easier for Samsung and the stickers are just there to make it look a little bit nicer but still removable if need be
@@rajasaif9999 that's what I did I corrected as he said he'd like to know so I told him. I was not aggressive or demeaning so I don't know what you're talking about
I love smartphone teardowns! It's pretty interesting seeing all those advanced technology inside the devices we use everyday. I was even more excited for the Z flip 4 video! You rock Zack 💪🏽
6:00 those black circular spots at the sides. And at the part where the phone bends. So when the phone bends multiple times, it can create air inside, so to remove air getting into the screen or in some unnecessary parts. That sticker might help. This is my theory.
@@sodanakin wouldn't you want a permanent folding screen rather than making it disposable??? That would just create more waste and it'd be expensive to just keep buying screens 🤣
@@Aurumfae I think, as long as they’re easily recyclable, they could become something akin to a paper replacement. First, though, they need to make it more durable.
@@nameless-user you're completely removing the best points of a display. using them as an equivalent for a single use disposable item like paper absolutely decimates the merits of it.
Nice to see that this phone is at least possibly repairable without much need for expensive proprietary tooling. Gives me confidence in this phone as I just got it a couple of weeks ago. That pop is still a little concerning though...
@@-Jester Refurbished Samsung original screens come with the plastic bumper installed, it's very easy to repair. A friend of mine owns his own repair shop and I was there when he repair the Z flip 5G (first one with SD865+
I love your teardown skin on my Flip 4. the phone is very nice in my opinion. I'm careful with it for shure 🙂 I use the coverscreen OS software for more functionality on the little screen, this is awesome nice. thanks for the crazy reviews .. ähh teardowns
Incredibly impressed that you can just tear the screen off like that, reattach it later and everything's just fine. It's actually more durable than it looks.
you are one of the primary reasons why phone companies are gradually making their units a bit more military-grade in durability.. they are so angry of you for rigging everything that they improve every new release of versions.. Thanks, Jerry!
5:58 they are to ensure to not let you do service of your phone outside samsung service centre(while in warranty) laptops have similar stickers for it but on screws to ensure that it has not been tampered by anyone while in warranty
I have a Z Flip 3. The screen protector started lifting about 6 months ago, and by 3 months ago, it was completely lifted in the folded section of the screen, so I just removed it. Been a few months now, no issues whatsoever. I think the reason they tell you not to remove it is because the adhesive is probably strong enough to lift the screen and crack it if one is not careful enough when removing it.
Same thing has happened to me however the screen is now cracking across this fold and my phone screen turns off randomly. I will never get a folding phone again
Id like to see a scratch test of the layer under the protective plastic, im curious if thats where Samsung is hiding their ultra thin and flexible glass
It's not glass per say as I remember Jerry testing it some time back. It still scratches at level 2, its more of a thin layer of glass in between plastic or you can call it glastic
@@nishantrajani7372 yeah but he only did that once with the fold 3, he should test all flips/folds without the screen protectors just in case even tho its probably gonna be the same results.
It's interesting to see exactly how the hinge on my flip 4 failed. From this teardown I can see exactly what happened. The little channel "gears" on the right side of the phone (when the screen is facing you) got knocked out of alignment, and the bottom one, whish is where the failure snapped it off, began to slide forward, going through the graphite tape just enough to puncture the back of the flexible screen directly on top of where it is supposed to be laying down, destroying the pixels there and creating an open circuit for the entire line of pixels in a cross guard section leading away from the initial damage. Before I did some minor surgery to wiggle the gear back away from the screen, I could both feel and see something jutting out of the screen and causing it to bulge, though I wasn't sure exactly what it was, besides probably part of the hinge. Now I know the exact shape by connecting the dots between what it felt like and what it looks like.
Same thing happened on my Flip4, the hinge failed causing it to snag when opening and closing, you could always hear a clicking sound, consequently after that the screen around the hinge area turned black and then completely off. Phone works still as it shows on the small front screen but not main screen. Guarantee on these phones is really hit and miss with Samsung as they look for any small scratch or mark on phone to attribute it to the cause. Buyer beware! I'm still in contract for another 9 months paying for a dead phone.
I always love it when, after full assembly is done, there are still some spare parts left over. Really though, Zack, nice job on not destroying the main soft display screen.
I bet the hinge just popped out of place a little bit in the bend test. And it has just enough force to keep the magnets from holding it closed. But crazy it survived. Though I think it more has to do with Jerry's experience with folding phones now as to before than the actual phone itself. Though Samsung does ALWAYS do an amazing job with durability... But everyone makes mistakes now and again...
Maybe that the pop sound was possibly due to the dust particles. They could be cracking and crunching between the actual hinge or the fold part itself. Because that is where that pop sound came from. Not fully sure, but possibly my guess.
What'd you mean? You can replace it yourself or if you want to ensure water resistance is in-tact (unlike any other battery powered device) then take it to an authorized repair center as they have the proprietary tools to ensure the entegrity is restored with testing after the repair is completed. Last I checked most ASCs charge $100 or less USD including labor for this, or buy the battery yourself and simply reuse the old adhesives --won't be water tight but neither are most every other battery power device that can be changed out simple
@@j.ballsdeep420 mate all that faff is exactly why non replaceable batteries are so bad. u used to be able to buy a battery online for 30 quid, pop the back off and click it in, took 30 seconds and brand new battery. its the main reason people upgrade, the batteries are always the first thing to go bad in a phone
I work at a Samsung authorized repair center and we have seen many issues with the hinge not fully opening. The change this year from gearless has some unforseen consequences for sure
From what I can tell Samsung isn't thinking about repairability while Apple seems to be going out of their way to make it harder. Hence why in theory he's ruthless with the iPhones.
Interesting that it still seems to have the same issue closing after reassembly. I can only guess that it's something to do with the new hinge, which certainly makes the longevity of the latest devices rather dubious.
@@zethloveless7238 Had to since I sold it to get a Fold 4. But I didn't like that at all. (Note to self: Grow bigger hands in next life. 😄) So went back to the flip form factor.
@@samyka68 it pays to be more informed. You just ended up costing yourself more money. Seems like you got into a fold totally unaware of the size. You make a good consumer
@@zethloveless7238 True. But it was not only the sheer size of the Fold but rather the whole feel of it. I didn't like to interact with it. And I sold it for the same price I paid. So, all's good 😊
I LOVED my Flip 3.. RIght up to the point about 9 months in where the screen at the fold area started to peel off. I hope they eventually get things worked out because the small size, but standard screen is what I'm still looking for.
@@twjonckheere I peeled my screen protector off after a small piece of dirt got trapped under it and dented the screen below. It is removable and doesn't destroy the screen, but it is leaving the screen exposed to damage. But I kind of agree with you, the tech is not fully there yet. But it is cool as hell and I'll probably stick to folding phones.
Awesome video zack , i am curious, after removing the plastic screen protector, is the layer of the screen under directly the utg or is it still another layer of soft plastic , hope you can do a scratch test on that layer , thanks
Nice tear down, only thing that was missing is the test of the actual resistance of the screen itself, since you only test the plastic cover on the later video 😔
Nice video, Wish you could do a little more disassembly showing in detail the hinge assembly. I just had the hinge on my 2 month old Samsung Galaxy Z flip 4 break causing the phone to only open about 45 degrees. apparently this new hinge, is super fragile and from mining the web Ive come across quite a few others experiencing the same issue. And since you have flip 3 and a flip 4 maybe compare the two. I see recall or class action in Samsungs future, kinda like the battery fiasco on the "Note" Thanks
Linus from LTT removed the screen protector on his galaxy fold 3 months ago and it's been okay. His started to lift pretty bad so he removed it live on the Wan show.
i want this phone REALLY bad, but 700€ is a big commitment for a phone personally. this video just completely took away all my fears of it being too fragile. this is crazy
also fun fact right as i was explaining to him how you cant remove the back panel without heat and careful prying because its glass he pried under with a pocketknife and broke the glass
Take the sim out of the flip and use your candybar for the winter - put it back in the flip during the warmer weather- Open phone slightly before flipping to disengage magnets- Flip with gradual twist- not a violent jerk- Install cover OS to do as much as possible withoout opening the phone to save on battery life
