But what if I told you that there was a team just as bad, if not worse and it was an NBA team. I’m going to go through the 3 key reasons why this one team might actually be the worst team in NBA history and why us NBA fans need to start looking at more than just records.
And that’s reason #1, it’s not just losing, it’s how teams lost and the Charlotte Bobcats were losing like no other team had. While the Pistons point differential is -11 with some toughly fought games with playoff bound teams, the Bobcats’ point differential was -15. This team was so awful that they won seven games and then drafted the guy with the ugliest shooting form of all time
We've seen some laughably bad teams throughout NBA history… before the atrocity that are the 2023-24 Detroit Pistons, we had the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers who won just NINE of 82 games, the eight-win Grizzlies and the nine-win Clippers in '99, and of course, the 2016 76ers with ten wins.
The Pistons are 26th in points, 21st in field goal percentage, 26th in defensive rating, 28th in 3 point percentage, and 20th in rebounds. They’re not even last in point differential right now (29th), that goes to the Wembanyama Spurs.
The Bobcats were last in points (30th), last in field goal percentage (30th), last in point differential (30th), last in defensive rating (30th), last in 3 point percentage (30th), and oh yeah second to last in rebounds (29th)
But EVERY last one of those were now gone, including Stephen Jackson, having either been traded or waived under Michael Jordan's watch. And it's not like the internal turmoil was going completely unnoticed… because ex-NBA coach Jeff Van Gundy called OUT Charlotte's management for blatantly TANKING! And said that the horrible roster construction was 'by design.'
Because that’s reason #2, the Pistons aren’t trying to lose and are trying to build talent. Other teams, not so much.
The team was designed to revolve around Gerald Henderson and Corey Maggette. Gerald Henderson who had never averaged over 10 a game was now being relied on. Sure, next “Kobe”…more like “Nobe”, And Corey Magette was a 32 year old that just got to the Bobcats, only made the playoffs once before, was benched his last 3 seasons, and said he was excited for the Bobcats because with MJ as owner "eventually he's going to get to that point where he's winning.”
He was out of the league 2 seasons later, never got to the winning part. And he was passing to the other team. And Maggette only played half his games in that 2012 season because he was dealing with achilles strains. Kemba wasn’t even starting.
At least the Pistons brought in a coach on paper who had been to the finals. Silas had a losing record bruh. (355-400)
**This is the worst team in NBA history**, but there’s another team that was down bad for even longer, perhaps the worst run in sports history.
Knowing they weren't going anywhere fast… the 76ers officially started an all-out TANK…
Even though there was controversy before the season about the 76ers looking to tank purposely… the plan remained in-tact! The Sixers won 19 games in 2014 even with MCW going for ROTY and embraced the sucking.
In 2014, the first piece of the future puzzle was finally discovered, as the 76ers drafted Joel Embiid. But he wouldn't even play until a couple seasons later, and in the meantime… the 76ers put together a casual 18 win in 2015.
Philly hit rock BOTTOM, going 247 days without a win, from March 27, 2015 to November 29, 2015! If we consider the end of the 2014-15 season and the following the 15-16 season… they lost 28 games in a row! And I remember that being the main reason the Pistons are the worst team of all time right?
Not only did the Sixers whiff on their Jahlil Okafor pick… they won just 10 games, losing the first 18 games of the season, and by Christmas, they were somehow just 1-and-30! For perspective, the Pistons were 3-34.
They scored 12 points in a quarter… bruh. ****Shoutout to the greatest big three ever.
The Pistons aren’t a good team and yes they tied the longest losing streak in NBA history, but there’s more to this story, there’s always context and the NBA community, media outlets, all need to look at the whole picture before making absolute statements like worst or best.
