[Video may contain spoilers] A mid-film transition from original black-and-white war reel to fully-restored and colorized footage. From the documentary film: They Shall Not Grow Old (2018) Directed by: Peter Jackson
My mouth was literally hanging open at this transition. It was like when I was a little girl 50+ years ago and first saw "The Wizard of Oz," when Dorothy opens her door and goes from a b&w world to colorful Oz. THIS is what film-making is all about -- true magic. The rest of the film is amazing too; I bought it on DVD as soon as I could.
It's the only historical film that doesn't have a single inaccuracy, as all the footage is real footage from the time period and all the voices are interviews from the people who were there. I hope they do this with more movies, so many people get their history from historical films.
I haven't seen this movie yet, but this legit has to be one of the most impressive achievements in cinema history to be able to do something like this. It's like when people saw the special effects on something like 2001: A Space Odyssey or Terminator 2 the first time, this movie is one of those moments.
What Peter Jackson and his computer wizards at Weta Digital achieved in the making of this documentary is nothing short of mind blowing, it shows the possibilities of what can be done is limitless, lets just hope we get more old footage restored in this way, truly amazing
I remember watching this bit and calling for my wife to come and see, she was so disinterested, head in her phone. Then when I played this bit, her jaw just dropped open. It really is an amazing moment in film.
How the hell did you get this footage without the voiceover? Holy shit man, I don't know how you have the raw footage, but thank you so much! Hearing the transition from the absolutely silent original footage, to the restored footage with added sounds, without the original voiceover that audiences heard in the theater version somehow makes the transition even more surreal.... Thanks so much man!
