Somebody needs to learn how to apply ridge vent. How do you think it would feel to get a brand new roof with a bad installation? Or worse, a brand new roof with a brand new leak!?

That ridge vent looks like it was removed and reinstalled. That is why there are hammer marks on the cap shingles. I am also going to guess that the nails they used were not long enough to penetrate into the roof deck.

Good point on both counts. Could be! 😬

Thank you for pointing out. I just had my roof done with GAF Cobra ridge vent. After seeing this I feel very disappointed. Just spent $13700 on the roof with 2850 Sq Ft. With some facial board, shiplap and raffle tails

That "Big Dip" and nail popping out was were the ridge vent got STEPPED ON, crushing down the vent, and the nail didn't "Pop Out" it just looks that way because the ridge vent (now crushed) is lower than it was during the installation. Lesson; DON'T STEP ON THE VENTS!
@essroofing
@essroofing 11 месяцев назад
Dips are created when nails are installed too far, crushing the ridge vent. With structured ridge vent like this, walking on it is safe enough, although not recommended. We agree - as a general rule, don’t step on ventilation!

I got a ridge vent installed and now my attic space is filled with spiders, tons of debris from my pine trees, and it even geta humid up there on occasion....any recommendations? I am wishing i installed a ventilator fan instead...everything i put up there now is infested with webbing and spiders and debris from my pine trees. No way to keep it clean.
@essroofing
@essroofing 11 месяцев назад
This should never happen with properly installed ridge vent. The openings on either side of the ridge beam should only be 3/4” wide or more narrow. If any wider, it will cause leaks and issues like you’re describing.
@catholicsoldier4239
@catholicsoldier4239 9 месяцев назад
Oh wow --- let me clarify though, when you say ridge beam, do you mean the actual cut through the wood underneath the ridge vent? They removed like the whole center section of the middle beam of the roof, it looks like 6 inches wide or so.

Its seeing issues like this that make you very uneasy about doing a ridge vent....I have powered gable fans but becuz of problems occurring often with the motors going out, I was thinking a ridge vent was the bomb when seeking a quiet, no maintainance option... these vids give one second thought...what about Ohagen vents or turbines? can you achieve equally good ventilation with those ?
@essroofing
@essroofing 2 месяца назад
Turbines don't really do much more than a simple hole in the roof. The spinning has been proven to not be very effective, as it's a result of the wind, not an intentional design to "suck" hot air out of the attic. O'Hagin vents are alright, like turbines, but they're holes in the roof, meaning there's more penetrations in the roofing system, and there will be "hot pockets" of air that aren't ventilated. Ridge vents are the best ventilation system, as long as you have a lot of applicable ridges (gable roofs, for example). Another great option is solar powered fans, for hip roofs.

I haven't looked yet but need to prepare mine. What do I do if the new vent nail holes match up with the old vent nail holes?

Apologies for seeing this so late! We would either replace the shingles underneath the ventilation, or hand seal with polyurethane or plastic cement before renailing.

@essroofing
@essroofing 11 месяцев назад
A good substrate and proper nailing technique should go a long way to preventing nail pops. Nail pops are most commonly found on roofs that were installed with nail guns.

What happens if you have tons of soffits intake vents along with ur ridge vent?
@essroofing
@essroofing 11 месяцев назад
That should be fine. You don’t want too much exhaust ventilation. Too much intake is okay, too much exhaust is not. According to the experts, anyway! A balanced system is best. Go to air vent dot com for more details and exact measurements.

sure, you can replace it, and it will be schit-ass loose with nail pops in a year or two. truth be told, a ridge vent has to be inspected at least yearly, or twice a year. it's a high maintenance item. period.
@essroofing
@essroofing 6 лет назад
We wouldn't disagree with inspections once or twice a year. For that matter, the whole roof should be inspected every year - just like we'd do maintenance on vehicles.

Don't use the nails that come with the vents. Screw them into roof, then shingle.
@essroofing
@essroofing 11 месяцев назад
We don’t recommend screws for ridge ventilation. That would void the manufacturer’s warranty. We use the ring shank nails provided with the ridge vent.

yeh a lot of times roof leaks are simple onesy twosy nail pops, but let's face it this isn't rocket science, in the time you took to show it, you could have hammered the nail back down, and glued the shingle back down with permatex or 3m black sealant. you don't need an entire new roof vent, that would make a high dollar repair out of a $9 fix.
@essroofing
@essroofing 6 лет назад
We appreciate your feedback. In one minute and 21 seconds, I could have climbed off the roof, opened a tube of plastic cement, and climbed back up the ladder, but using tar to seal all the issues on this ridge vent would have taken at least 20 minutes. Besides that, that would have been an improper fix. We don't do band-aid fixes, temporary repairs, or repairs that void the manufacturer's warranty. The ridge vents were fragile, and the ridge caps were dislodged. At minimum, all of the ridge caps needed to be replaced. Thanks again for stopping by and leaving your feedback!
@rocketsurgery8337
@rocketsurgery8337 5 лет назад
Nails were too short and possibly the ridge vent was installed without a gap between them. Hot cold cycling caused expansion and lifted the nails. Not a quick fix but not a hard one. Simple rocket surgery.

you're not sealing the edges of the ridge vent deep into sealer, like this video states ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XIX8E2RriDU.html
@essroofing
@essroofing 6 лет назад
That video has a different type of ridge vent. It's a metal ventilation system, with flat surfaces where it attaches to the roof. With GAF Cobra RigidVent3, installing tar along the ventilation would increase the chances of leaking.
