You can run into crazy people in houses like this. Squatters, people using it for criminal activities, you name it. So, definitely be careful. But if he was going to come out with guns, he would have done it when you knocked on the door. It's like with wild animals. You want to make a lot of noise. Don't surprise them or corner them. That's when things get dangerous. But if you feel unsafe for any reason, get the heck out of there. Trust your instincts and be safe.

You need to adopt a new motto: "No lawn is worth getting shot over."

It is possible they were inside and watching, and trying to decide in their minds what to do with a stranger out in their yard. Ultimately, since you didn't feel comfortable, and people tried to warn you it could be unsafe, I'm glad you left "early". You still made a huge change. A lot of space was recovered, yard form was being recovered, visibility was greatly improved. Should be better for the person and the neighborhood. Sometimes "everything" could be "too much change" if a person is struggling with trauma, etc. Admiring how much you got done, likely will still be the talk of the neighborhood. Wondered if there is such a thing as "friendly food" that might also help. Thought of a box of pancake mix and some eggs, a can of chili, or a convenience store would know what the local favorite junk food is. Just something to set outside the door. Interesting that was a piece of wilderness right in a busy area. By not clearing out to the edges, it was maintained.

I watch you guys mow that brush down and it reminds me of the time I thought I was helping my husband. I decided to mow a brushy area my husband had been missing. Then I learned he was skipping it because he planted little black walnut starts there. It was right at the edge of my flower garden.

I don't understand why you felt uncomfortable and felt you had to leave the jobsite, when you had already approached the owner and got their pre approval to cut their lawn before you ever started doing the job? Because as everyone knows it's illegal to trespass on someone's property without first getting consent.
