Good song & nice to see Charlie in action. Is this among the three Charlie themed songs you know of? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4D6Ns2CpCtE.html
It is! This is one I'm particularly fond of but haven't been able to get. It's quite unique for a song back then to be anti Chaplin. Though I have heard that even today some Brits strongly dislike him because he weaseled his way out of the great war.
@@misterphonograph1893 I believe it was used as a marching song by WW1 soldiers marching to the front. Anyone who avoided military service back then would be fair game for satirical songwriters. His later film, The Great Dictator, was being screened here in Hull at 'The National Picture Theatre' when it was bombed during a WW2 air raid. The projectionist promptly switched to 'God Save The King' as everyone escaped unharmed, though the screen was blown away! Very timely action by the Luftwaffe! The ruins still stand, as in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9pnUWJipn2c.html though there was some demolition to make the building safe. It will eventually be preserved as a memorial to civilians lost during the many air raids Hull endured.
