Yes but no matter how good night vision is there is still a margin of error. No matter how good the night vision is, the soldier is trained to take that advantage because the harder to see, the harder to be targeted

There's not much American strategy here, at least not American Marines. We don't dig in. We usually don't fortify. We attack and rely on mobility and speed. Sitting still and digging in is suicidal. Hit HARD and move fast!

Yes, I don’t have military experience but I couldn’t understand why they were fighting this way. It felt sort of like an old ground war, not modern war or a war with more technologically advanced aliens.

It’s the difference in skill levels. It is a multi country army. Not every country trains their troops to the level of the Marine, plus Private Jackson is barely out of basic. That means they are putting troops out with minimal training. You can’t expect troops of that skill level to push the enemy, but they can hold a line

as a Brit our rule is no fire without movement and no movement without fire. because as soon as you fire you give your position away and you can't move unless the enemy have got their heads down cos they're under fire. that's why it breaks down into small squads or pairs one moves a short distance while one fires, in bounds towards or away from the enemy. lines of soldiers firing from a tench just isn't how it's done anymore. with modern drones mortars and artillery digging yourself a big trench just saves the enemy having to dig a mass grave.

I always find it hilarious just how low ranking the leaders of the human forces tend to be. There was a worldwide war going on against conquest from an alien race. I somehow doubt a captain or major would be leading the charge!

@@jeremyporter2547as an ex British soldier I can't agree. yes we lose officers in war in large numbers but not from the very top. we are led into battle by the lieutenants captains and majors (these ranks had higher casualties by ratio comparative to other ranks) . in war the fighting is done by the younger men.

The design of the armor. A kevlar west here on earth will take small arms fire unless fired at too close range. But a knife is working along a different kind of speed and physics that the kevlar is not designed to counter. It will give some protection, but not stop the knife entirely as effective as it will a bullet. So the knife can actually cause wounds. Not ensured to be deadly, but if struck at the right place and force, still incapacitating. And with all likelyhood, an alien armor would also be designed for certain conditions and not all. Especially if they are not anticipating the present human weapons. On the other hand, earthly armor would also not be designed to counter the kind of laser and plasma fire always described in these stories, leaving it virtually useless. But the mistake in all of these stories are describing the humans as always being indomitable in spirit and the aliens never. That simply doesn't hold up to even a very superficial scrutiny. Nor does a described always present inability to adapt and change overall tactics among aliens. If they are to have smashed several civilizations around space, they will inevitably have faced that exact problem several times and at least have learned at some point. So, again it will not even pass superficial scrutiny.

@@Jens-Viper-Nobel understood.... though the general thesis in most all of these stories, the aliens are predictable in their tactics and the main being overwhelming numbers from a unified monoculture, where as humans are resolute in intent... much like a brick wall with each brick in unison to make a wall, where the alien is a solid concrete wall... the weak among the humans die off until all that is left is the battle hardened experienced fighters who have nothing left but payback. The technology the aliens have maybe advanced, but not necessarily superior.

@SigFigNewton The biggest driver of technological development for humanity has pretty much always been war. If we as a species were ever threatened by an outside force, humanity would come together and create some shit the alien species invading never thought possible. We are the species that strives under pressure. The whole space race is a great example of human ingenuity and competitiveness under pressure. Did we need to as a species put satellites in orbit ? No we didn't need to. We did so because someone else was going to do it first. Did we need to put a man on the moon ? No but one group of humans the USA had to one up another group of humans the Russians or at the time Soviet Union. Humanity is only a fractured species because we don't have anyone else to fight or compete with. Humanity is basically like Orks fights amongst each other until something else comes along to fight with.

@@Thurgosh_OG The asteroid belt has vastly more minerals and metals than earth, and they're not in a planetary gravity well. This need to feel "invadable" is human species-wide narcissism. The Kuiper belt has more metal than humanity could use in millennia. In interstellar space, these bloodthirsty aliens who are hell-bent on conquering worthless planets, could simply fly over to the nearest supernova remnant, and scoop up as much metal as a dozen earths. When you have a huge volume of space to use for resources, there's no shortage of anything, and no reason for conflict.

Yeah. an idea in sci fi that is commonly used to set an alien invasion plot in motion is that the alien home world is no longer habitable and they need one of those genuinely-rare planets suitable for life as we know it. Humans as that which stands in the way of their promised land. Another common one is that they view humans as a threat. Humans as rivals. Another popular one is aliens who are always looking to add another species or set of species to their empire. Human slaves or mind controlled human soldiers or humans being assimilated into a hive mind. Humans as tools.

IMO human beings are xenophobic and warmongers, these stories tend to cast us in an altruistic light that few of us deserve. TBO I didn't read/listen to this one. I do pray that in the not so distant future we evolve into our best selves, before we end our species, but I don't hold out hope.

1) The story line is a little less hackneyed than some of these are; the AI doesn't pick up well on "and" and plurals when translating voice to script, though it was better than a lot I've seen. 2) Though this is far from the only place I've seen it, the word "decimated" was again misused. It means "reduced by one tenth", not "mostly destroyed", which is how people usually use it. Overall, better than most of these I've seen.

Certain Armours are made to withstand high speed kinetic energy, like that from bullets. Knives are slower and the user can look for joints to aim into or may just have sufficient strength to overcome the lesser protection the ballistic armour gives against blades.
