They tore out the street in front of the palace! 

The Gwanghwamun Plaza (광화문광장) was has been undergoing a massive renovation since 2020, and finally re-opened to the public in the fall of 2022. It’s been updated with more space, including removing an entire street to make way for a wider walkway, and they added a giant underground museum (free) that runs underneath the King Sejong and Yi Sun-shin statues and chronicles both of their lives.
