Please do let me know in the comments what you miss, where you would like to explain things in more detail. I will in my next video spend some time!

You just keep getting better and better with your explanations of important stuff. One of the biggest challenges I face is stopping myself from forming a bonsai 'before' I have waited long enough for a decent sized trunk!! It is so frustrating making myself wait sometimes. After seeing this video I am going to force myself to rethink some of my intended pruning decisions on my younger maples.

💕Thank you so much for this very nice compliment. I AM trying to get better. When I started this channel 5 months ago, I had never given youtube much thought and never really put a video together. So although I dare say I have pretty decent knowledge on growing bonsai, the learning curve on video making is VERY steep. My workspace is a mess, because I have spent so much time on getting video material together!

Hi Stefano, would be happy to help. In the end it is not all that dificult, but for the first one or two trees it is nice to have someone walk you through the process & choices! Aim for taper, movement. Low branches thicker than higher branches. Shorter internodes over long internodes.

Very good explanation, and I will definitely put it to practice. In many of the species however, banyan for example, the new branch grows only from the end where it has been cut. Thus, it proliferates at that end, but there are no branches in the lower part of the trunk.
@GrowingBonsai
@GrowingBonsai Год назад
Sometimes species require a bit more overall approach, such as removal of growing tips throughout to be triggered to budd. Many ficus species a full leaf removal and clipping of the growing tips is effective in getting budding. Naturally, one only does this with a very healthy tree!

Great video Jelle - clear and precise. The algo's brought you up in my feed so your chanell is doing well. I will subscribe and watch all your other video's. Its such a shame we live such short lives compared to our bonsai. You are still a young man and have years to enjoy their maturing. I'm 65 and well aware that I will never see my plants grow thick trunks with taper. But I continue on anyway. I daresay they will end up in the dumpster one day, along with most of my belongings, as I don't have anyone to pass them onto. But In the meantime I continue to water, fertilize, repot, and chop....what else is there? Thank you for the channel.
@GrowingBonsai
@GrowingBonsai 2 года назад
Dear Bary, time is relative. I focus on enjoying the now. I grow from seeds, cuttings, get big trunks and can be tempted to get a nico pot every once in a while. It may sound cheeky, but the journey is more important than the endgoal to me. So in my garden there will always be more projects than finished trees. I am sure you will see many of your projects grow bigger, more beautifull and enjoyable!

I’m just an amateur bonsai grower. My thickest bonsai trunk is a Japanese maple that I was growing and chopped off the top when it looked like it was dying in my clay soil. I dug it up, plopped it into a container with compost and potting soil and it survived. That was many years ago. It is still in its planter pot and the trunk is quite thick and aged. All my other bonsai attempts are young and have nice little trunks. I like the little trunks too. I also have several Japanese maple trees thriving in my little backyard and giving lots of shade during the summer months.

Nicely done video, friend! I always enjoy seeing more of your trees. I'm really stuck on that Field Maple... I like it's style... The cut of its (Barry) Gibb. I have been training most of my Acers in (somewhat) that amalgamated method discussed on that last Deshojo. But there are a few that are aptly angled that I will be leaving the top on for a few years, and maintenance pruning and wiring the foundations of "the tree" within that first branch for a few years before removing the top. When, at either 3:49 or 8:49, you say, "This is an old Beech." I shouted "YOU'RE an old Beech!" 😂😂😂😂😂

The impression of age is always a matter of the viewpoint of the observer. If you think I am an old beech, one could wonder what that makes you ;) In any case, I am glad you are enjoying these videos so much, and love the enthusiasm of your engagement. Maybe you can share your acers in the crazy forums? Would love to see what you are doing there!

@@GrowingBonsai Most of my work with Acers is from seed.. .. I've been sharing and discussing in my "TinyTree Study Group Subforum".. it's now the most heavily trafficked "Study Group Forum" If you're an "Old Beech"... I'm a "Lil' Fagus" 😂😂😂😂😂 I think I will do a video tour of my "(crappy, post apocalyptic) "garden" for you jelle... If that's something you'd be interested in.

Great video! Clear, concise and proven techniques. I have a random question….. how much sun do you give your Deshojos? I understand that we’re in different places, but I’m curious. I have 2 Deshojos and for me, they seem to prefer morning sun and that’s it. They get maybe 3-4hrs full morning sun and then shade for the rest of the day. Should I be giving em more sun? Thanks, take care and keep them awesome videos coming!! BONSAI!!

Hi Dan, my deshojos is on a lower level of my bonsai table, which stands next to a broad tree so they are somewhat shaded during the heat of the day in summer. Morning and afternoon full sun. Midday.. dappled sun I would say!

Hi Jelle.very useful information I need to watch again when Queen’s Jubilee Air Show finishes roaring around overhead. But while I remember i think you need Magnus’ black backdrop, it’s sometimes difficult to see when plants are behind your subject, but I’m watching on iPhone so pic is small. God bless you 🙏✝️ ✌️🇺🇦🌻✌️

Hi Gaye, I have noticed this myself! Just dificult. I need to make somthing that I can just put where I need it, as my current backdrop is too small to get a good image out!

@@GrowingBonsai I've been thinking, and one thing that would be really insightfull is about Elm cuttings, I've read that there are two moments you can get cuttings from them, Hardwood on Autumn and Softwood on Spring, As my Elm prebonsai was bought last year, I just up-poted and let it grow freely tru' the growing season, and on Autumn I prunned it really low and made a bunch of cuttings, some thinner and some thicker we are almost on winter here, and it seems like at least a few of them rooted, I found a bit hard to find info on the subject...
@GrowingBonsai
@GrowingBonsai 2 года назад
@@Albanus35 Coincidentally.. I took some 15 hardwood cuttings as I was pruning my elm (I think they feature in the elm styling video already). I also took root cuttings. 80% of the hardwood, and 20% of the root cuttings took. So I am indeed planning to do a follow-up video, just on rooting Elm cuttings. I almost feel as if I started a propagation channel!
