Thief 40th Anniversary Video Essay: Michael Mann became a household name after creating the hugely popular TV series “Miami Vice”. Oozing with style, it defined the aesthetic of the 80s from its slick MTV style visuals to its influential fashion. Mann however had already displayed his knack for crafting epic crime stories with this debut “Thief”. It would provide mark the beginnings of his legacy as one of the master of the crime genre, merging meticulous research and authenticity and elevating his stories to epic proportions creating new legends out of modern cops and bandits.

I have to admit, it was only when I rewatched it that I realised how truly great it is. The grander vision of Heat eclipsed it for a while. But Thief is a tighter punch to the gut with all of the same themes, perfectly packaged into a tight character based thriller.

This film and soundtrack still hold up. Mann would cast real life thieves to play cops and cops to play thieves. I always felt that Neil McCauley in Mann's Heat was Frank.

Can't talk about Mann's film "Thief" without mentioning his early work in American television on crime shows like Starsky & Hutch and Police Story. Then, in 1979, Mann wrote and directed the made-for-TV movie "The Jericho Mile" about prison life (shot in Folsom Prison) and where he became friendly with a few cons. Some of those experiences (and contacts) led to the film "Thief."

Great video. What I love about Michael Mann’s crime films (I should say projects actually) is that it balances characterisation with the spectacle on screen. Thief, Manhunter, and ultimately Heat, are films that progressively expand Mann’s style in spectacle... and yet never waiver from their characterisation. Thief’s characterisation is rich, multi layered. Heat would brilliantly expand this even further, and Collateral will expand this even further by pitting the outcast against the average joe (i.e. the audience) I find it almost ironic that Thief was Mann’s first film, since his vision of the urban counterfeit world has become a trademark, that went on to inspire older directors such as William Friedkin with To Live & Die in LA and, to a certain extent, John Frankenheimer with 52 Pick Up. Friedkin’s film has further expanded this with the sun drenched images of LA fitting perfectly with the films villain. Thief is the perfect introduction to Mann’s world, we have the rain soaked concrete, neon lit urban jungle that is Frank’s world, and the brilliant score by Tangerine Dream, showcases the despair and goals that Frank has set for himself. James Caan has the role of his career with Thief, yes The Godfather is IMO the better film, but Thief demonstrates Caan’s strengths and unique delivery. FYI, reportedly he turned down Blade Runner to do this film. Frank is the typical Mann protagonist, jaded. grey, the man dreams of going straight and the collage he managed to put together is the hope of that dream becoming a reality... however he rushes into something he knows it too good to be true due to lack of time. These are themes that Mann would revisit... Heat further refined these themes, the outlaw is more disciplined, but he is also more tightly wound... so much so that by the end he has no choice but to go down a path of ruin. By Collateral, the outlaw has become an old hand, fed up, losing the edge that made him the man that he is... and is eventually bested by the in denial dreamer that is the average joe. Keep up the great work. Cannot wait till your next video👍.

Thanks for the comment. Mann has created some of the most compelling and layered character studies of not only the criminal mind but of the status of men in the modern world. His crime movies are his masterpieces beautifully composed and realised as well as utterly absorbing. It’s a shame that he’s been absent from filmmaking for a while and I’m hoping that he returns to the quality of his work before his obsession with digital cinema. As immediate as his later films such Miami Vice, Public Enemies and Blackhat were, I really hope he returns to his cleaner more precise style. Well done for spotting 52 Pick up, one of my favourites, a true gem that needs more appreciation. As for Caan, he’s perfect in this movie as you said, this is a great companion film to The Gambler, which is another great turn from him. It’s hard to imagine anyone else in this role, Caan is so credible, the right amount of toughness yet there is still a vulnerable there too - a very authentic presence and a great template for the rest of Mann’s characters.
@spaceodds1985
@spaceodds1985 3 года назад
@@MovieBirthdays Could not have put it better myself. I agree, his films, particularly his crime films are character studies of the male psyche of the modern world. I remember showing Collateral to my niece and nephew (MCU Spidey just outstayed his welcome) and apart from loving the film, my nephew said that Vincent is not only a man lost in a world that he doesn’t recognise anymore (the world of anonymity being eroded) but that also Vincent is the direct successor to Harry Lime. Lime perfectly sumed up the post war cynicism of trading life for profit, whilst Vincent cynically sums up of men and women finding solace in dreams and fantasy (that lost in space speech near the end) and facing reality, thus not achieving their goals. I hope Mann returns to filmmaking, Blackhat is a mixed bag of a film, Public Enemies is an interesting curio, whilst Miami Vice looks and sound great, but pales in comparison to his earlier work. In regards to Caan, I agree only he can do this role. I believe this was his last film before he went to self imposed exile, so I think he gave the performance of his life here.

@@spaceodds1985 It sounds like your niece and nephew are getting a great film education, great observations on Collateral, the movie still holds up really well, despite a shaky third act I still watched it twice at the cinema when it was released just to enjoy the atmosphere Mann created, it was nice to see him return to crime after Ali.

@@MovieBirthdays Same I saw it twice at the cinema. As for my niece and nephew I’ve been babysitting them since they were nine and seven, and they only got interested in films because they were tired of Potter and al. and I started showing them films from my childhood such as Indiana Jones and the original Star Wars (not a fan of the latter, but it would be criminal not to show them something that they might enjoy) Throughout the years I showed them all sorts of films that I considered permissible as they grew older. However I do draw the line at horror and 18 rated films which are out of the question, even though they have seen many horror films with their friends.

At 1:37 you mention that "Thief" and it's gritty, synth-driven neon crime aesthetic were highly influential during the rest of the '80s. yoo do you think the emphasis on the reflections of city lights & signs onto the cars etc after the betrayal is a nod to Plato's Cave?? "Slowly, his eyes adjust to the light of the sun.
