Thief: Shalebridge Cradle - The Creepiest Video Game Level Ever Made 

I remember the day. The night I mean. 11 o'clock. Lights off. Curtains drawn. Headphones on. Booted the game... ...Shalebridge... ...after completing the level at 4am, I stayed awake with a pillow held close and a towel between my legs...

One of my favorite moments from this level is when you try to leave through the basement after meeting Lauryl. "It won't open...that's not a good sign." You can hear how out of his element he is.

I never found this terrifying when I played it on Xbox years ago but I find it terrifying to watch now.

As soon i saw the puppet running in 14:15 ive shot some noise arows and fire arows in that direction. Got 3 puppets chasing me directly hahaha .i think the running stone statues were more tougher than the puppets. Run and hide and find and crush and kill

I'd only ever played the 2014 game; so, up until now, I'd thought that the creepiest levels in the series had to be the Factory of the Dead, Forgotten Ruins, and ESPECIALLY the entirety of the 5th Chapter "The Forsaken." And yet, throughout my explorations of The City, I'd repeatedly heard mention of someplace called "Shalebridge." I initially thought little of it at the time, but this other guy, who'd played all the Thief games, shuddered when I blithely mentioned the name "Shalebridge" in passing. I asked him, "Say, what's the matter with you? You look like you're having a Nam flashback or something!" He then told me that this level far, FAR surpassed all the unsettling levels of Thief `14. That this level was the creepiest of ANY game. I'd thought he was exaggerating. I'd thought there's no way it could be as bad as he said. Turns out... I WAS WRONG.

Thanks for putting this up. :) Brings back memories of absolutely bricking it while I crept around its terrifyingly creepy environs all those years ago. A truly classic videogame level.

i remember shitting myself playing this level when i was 13 years old. One of my relative was working at some CD company, so he brought me this game for my birthday and also this game were my first ever original disc game. I stucked at this level for couple days maybe because i remember hitting ESC button so hard and running through the living room for the first time seeing a monster running front of me in (at 14:10) xd

First time I've seen your playthrough of this - great job. The Thief: Dark Project series is an all-time favorite of mine, and this level (and to a lesser degree, Haunted Cathedral & Return to) is the creepiest, scariest, most visceral levels EVER developed. Haven't seen an equal since. Thanks for sharing!

I also remember the first time playing this. I was around 13 years old, it was afternoon. 3 other people were in the appartment. I was in the living room, alone - playing this level. I was scared shitless :D The atmosphere and enemy design was something I never saw before.. and even today at the age of 28, it is unsetttling to play this level, but I love it. So fascinating in many aspects. Brilliant level design, horrendrous Sound Design and a completely eerie story. Truely one of the best levels ever made.

You really showed some balls in that latter half lol, I wouldn't have thought you could actually kill the ghosts, good work on the video
