This was actually one of the best matches I've seen Thiem play this year, but as in almost all matches he's played since his injury, it just wasn't meant to be. It's a shame, a couple more matches in Gstaad would have been great to see. His 2015 run was amazing. I hope he will be more lucky next week in Kitzbuhel. Every match before his retirement is now precious, no matter how much better he used to be in his heyday.

Is he playing Olympics?
@J.-M.
@J.-M. Месяц назад
@@foreverFreak Probably not. I doubt he would even qualify for the Olympics, given his results, plus he was never really interested in the Olympics in the past. The tennis tournament in Paris begins on July 27, and Kitzbuhel next week which Dominic is scheduled to play ends on July 27.

@J.-M.
@J.-M. Месяц назад
@@gaving9463 Some players are irreplaceable. He was unique. Nobody played like him and nobody will. His powerful playing style was exciting, his backhand technique was innovative. It's a particularly painful loss in this era of homogenization where 90% of players are like identical clones. I still get more joy from watching him in this sorry state than I get from watching the majority of today's players.

I don’t typically recommend anyone give up but in thiems case I recommend it. When you come back from injury and you’re half the player you once were it’s time to stop, especially half level for over 2 years. At this point it’s clear he won’t just magically find his old self.

Discerning factors that made Thiem great are now common canon. And with his personal way to play only 10 to 20% less of everything is sufficient to be not a top 100 player anymore. These last percent are the most hard to achieve and maintain and for him not reachable anymore. You therefore are completely right.

@@foreverFreak Some of those smaller ATP 250 tournaments we've seen in the previous years used to be much faster than Madrid. According to official measurements, Madrid wasn't even the fastest of the three clay ATP Masters 1000s in previous years. The "fast Madrid clay" is a myth to a degree, because of the Madrid altitude that gets mentioned all the time. Even though some 650 m above sea level is not that rare, not exactly high mountains.

What is more of a pity? Thiem's lack of motivation to keep going after finally winning a slam or the wrist injury that held him back from reaching his peak again? I think a combination of both. He was so promising, a real threat to the big 3 for quite some years. And when the monkey is off his back by winning the US Open he is declining instead of being hungry for more. Nonetheless, Thiem gave us tennis fans some wonderful tennis moments from 2016 till 2020.

his wrist wrecked his strokes. nobody could annihilate the ball like thiem off both wings on the run esp and going from defense to offense. if he plays well now his shots have little pop off both wings he never flattens the ball out nor unloads. check out his 2017 delpo match. 2018 qtr finals v rafa, his 2018-19 masters v nadal, even his 2016 brisbane v federer he was smashing shots
@Askaa88
