Wollaston also worked with optics- he invented the Wollaston prism that separates light into two orthogonally polarized beams.

Apparently a "line" is a unit of measurement equal to either a twelfth or a fortieth of an inch. I'd never heard of it before.

That platinum wire is also called Wollaston wire as far as I can recall, he invented a method to produce extremely thin wire out of it. One of the uses of it was in an early radio detector, called a barreter detector. Edison also experimented early on with wollaston wire to make his high resistance bulbs but put it aside because it was too expensive iirc.

Edison is responsible for developing a filament reliable enough to be sold. As Keith said other wires burn, melt or only get hot without lighting up.

hardly. platinum based incandescent demonstrations were neither practical, long lasting, or affordable and never produced enough light to even read a book by at a reasonable distance. demonstrating mere incandescence induced by electrical current is a long way away from creating a real and useful light bulb, which is what Edison did.

I bet it was used to light cigarettes, candles, etc. as a demonstration. It seems like the only possible "practical" use.

Are there like standard lines that were used for measuring distances back in the day? Because in my world lines come in all lengths and sizes.

The line was variously defined as anywhere between a tenth and a fortieth of an inch, though at the time it was in common use the inch hadn't yet been fully standardized either. In this context I think it means "get them as close as possible without letting them touch".

Some small fraction of an inch, probably a twelfth or a sixteenth. (Definitions vary as units hadn't been fully standardized yet when the line was in common use.)
