The first verse after the spoken word is for sure based on the ending of the Twilight zone episode The Rip Van Winkle Caper . I've kept my eye open for years to figure out what the other 2 verses might be based on with no luck though

Still looking for the other two verses . In that Twilight zone episode a group of men steal gold , hide in a cave for 100 years in special chambers and wake up after they know cops are not looking for them . The car is useless after 100 years . they set out through the desert carrying the gold . by the end 1 man has all the gold . His compadre just died and lays in the sand . he himself is minutes from death when he gets to the 4 lane high way . A futuristic car passing by stops . his last words are offering a gold bar to take him to a town . They think he's a crazy prospector . They couldn't understand why he thought the gold was valuable as in the future gold could be manufactured and was mostly worthless. I think that proves Phil wasn't writing random stuff in this song . the other 2 verses are from something , but what . Broken Joe sounds like a Springsteen song or something . The fox could only have been something animated probably . Appreciate any leads from anyone . its my wish , to search no longer ...

Hi Greg, another great Lizzy Thursday, I actually felt Fools Gold deserved to be an higher ranking than it got. I think there are quite a few tracks that need shuffling around. Most of them are in a fair place to be honest. But a few stand out to be in a more desired position. Fools Gold was recorded when Thin Lizzy was very much gaining in popularity and it was arguably the best line up, I know a few fans dont agree but thats what makes Lizzy special, there are so many different line ups adding a certain chemistry to all the music. 👌

I'll take words that paint a picture sung or spoken by the lyric master above most other rock front men who you can't understand or translate what they're saying or singing about. He can do no wrong imo.

Eh. I like my heroes, but I also like being objective and admitting when the falter. The Beatles is my favorite band and Revolution #9 is absolutely terrible. The people I tend to like tend to be consistently awesome, and Phil is awesome 99% of the time. He's still human and can make less awesome decisions, though, and the intro is one of his more questionable choices.
@brianatherton8752
@brianatherton8752 Год назад
Greg, I'm not a musician and I comment purely from a listener's point of view so technical analysis is not in my make up. But, i can detect bad or indifferent lyricists a mile off especially in comparison to Phil. Are Beatles a rock band by the way? And are you giving them 100% or just the 99%?
@gregtroyan
@gregtroyan Год назад
@@brianatherton8752 The Beatles are most definitely a rock band. If The Beatles aren't rock, then neither is Chuck Berry or Elvis, the latter who is literally called "The King of Rock N Roll". And, in my comment, I cited a Beatles song I thought was terrible. Even the greatest band of all time can have a stinker.

I think it's time for Greg to update his Top 10 bands video. He says in the video that the list changes over the years. I'm actually hoping that heading into 2023 his Top 10 bands has become a little more impressive. We all know Kiss, Steinman, and Thin Lizzy will remain in the Top 10, those are 3 great artists, but a few of his top 10 are somewhat questionable. I always give him sht about having Loudness in his Top Ten bands of all-time...Loudness really? Loudness is a better band than Led Zeppelin? I think not. We may not get Zeppelin in his Top.10 ever, but one can wonder if he has caught a little more of a clue on some things.😏

@gregtroyan Год назад

I voted for Sitamoia, but it lost again! As far as this song, I’m pretty much with you. I may have ranked it a touch higher, but I’ve never been a fan of spoken word in music. Just my opinion. But as an aside, how the heck is Emerald only A rank?

@@gregtroyan not to contradict your feelings around Emerald mate, but I remember an online vote of Lizzy tracks on a forum from about 10 years ago, and Emerald was actually number 1, it was concidered the all time favourite and ultimate Lizzy track. I dont know if you know the story or havs seen the documentarys or read the books but The Boys Are Back In Town very nearly didn't get released as a single, it was deemed too commercial, and Thin Lizzy didn't see themselves as that type of band. Same situation with Whisky In The Jar, that was supposed to be the b-side of Black Boys On The Corner but the record company swapped the 2 around much to the annoyance of Phil Lynott, but it put Lizzy on the map, and so did even more so The Boys Are Back In Town which saved the band from going into obscurity. All this just highlights the mega diversity of Thin Lizzy and especially Phil's song writing. 👌
@gregtroyan
@gregtroyan Год назад
@@quolizzy1554 I think Emerald is one of the band's most popular songs and I can see why it would win a vote on a Lizzy forum. It rocks hard, has great guitars and lyrics, but there are stronger songs in the catalog for me.

Music at this time always struck me as peculiar. Progressive even experimental rock with weird fantasy/ medieval/folksy elements. Here, even a slight western feel mixed in. Translated to weird kids shows too. That is how the intro sounds to me…weird combination. Incongruent. After the spoken word ends, the first bars remind me of the song, Hit Me With Your Best Shot (Pat Benetar). Then the harmonized Fool’s Gold lyrics come in and that twist in the tune makes it their own. Yeah it’s Thin Lizzy. A decent song. Nothing to write home about if I’m honest. But better than some of their other manic songs. This is very discernible. It doesn’t leave much of an impression on me .
@gregtroyan
@gregtroyan Год назад
Chronologically, this would be pre-Hit Me With Your Best Shot, obviously, but the comparison still stands. I like it but it's almost too prototypical of the band. It's definitely them and their sound.
@DreamsSketcher
@DreamsSketcher Год назад
@@gregtroyan yeah i like the cohesiveness of their sound. Much more in control. Its not bad at all, and is a bit hooky. Definitely their sound. But not something i would sit down to listen to specifically. I I could tell from the peculiar sound at the time ( prevalent) it was pre-Pat Benatar. Maybe her songwriter took some cues, inspiration from Thin Lizzy, right?😉 And this reminds me of a world class pianist who works with top students and it’s very interesting watching them play together. To show their understanding and growth they are asked to play something with different endings - to ad-lib- in front of their instructor. And he will give them credit because it sounds good, the things they choose to do. But he then plays different possibilities- each choice more inspired than the last. Most people don’t get too far in even if they play something very pretty and acceptable . It is predictable and is very often “done”. So the instructor will sit down and show them what they did, and show them different possibilities of what they could have done,and then he shows what the masters would have done. Like Mozart. And it was the little twists and turns not expected, compared to other easily guessed options that impress. I get that feeling sometimes with Thin Lizzy and with this song. I think Phil was a huge part of that. Could they keep that up after he was gone? I don’t think so. He was the special ingredient!

The last time a friend of mine laughed at Thin Lizzy, I broke his nose. I think Greg needs a better class of friend. That said, although I like the words and the sentiments, the spoken intro has never really worked for me. It does come across like the introduction to a not very good epic western. It's an enjoyable Thin Lizzy song, but far from a great one, although the lyrics are some of Phil's most well-crafted and picturesque, and the guitar solo is beautifully lyrical as well. So, I find myself largely agreeing with Greg, although I would not express my thoughts on this song with quite such a negative slant.

I like the intro. I am biased and love to hear Philip speak, so I could listen to him read a phone book aloud and would enjoy it. There is passion in voice here, and it gives you a sense that he is still here with us. I'm in! Worth the price of admission.

Firstly every song on "Johnny the Fox" is better than "Boogie woogie dance" - which for me is a rare dud of a track. "Fool's Gold" is a good track - good hooks and interesting lyrics - great guitar work - very solid track but the opening has always left me a little conflicted. The great famine was a huge catastrophe for the people of Ireland the consequences of which reduced the population of Ireland from 8 million to 6 million in just 10 years and eventually to just 4 million in the following decades. We are still the only country in Europe with a smaller population now in 2022 than we had in 1840. To the point - on one hand I'm happy the Famine is mentioned by Phil ( I hadn't heard it mentioned in a rock song before!) but the delivery is a little lacking in gravitas for me . Just my personal feeling - it would work better if he could have integrated a sung verse about the famine rather than the spoken word intro. Still I like the song in general. 🤟☘️

Hi Brian, thank you for articulating why Greg's friends are morons for laughing at the famine and Phil writing about it. This famine had a great impact on the Irish society and it's history. Changed Ireland's demographics, politics, and culture as a whole. I enjoy the song overall, but probably listen to it as much as I listen to The Boys Are Back In Town now, which is close to never.

@@delorangeade I should interject that I don't know if ALL Greg's friends are morons. I believe Greg is a great person and should only surround himself with people that make him better. Greg may have some incredible friends that have a clue and are beautiful souls. But the "friends" of Greg's we have been exposed to on his reaction channel are indeed morons. They may think I am one, or that I am just upset they don't like Thin Lizzy. Nope, I don't care if they enjoy Thin Lizzy or not. My reasons for calling them morons go much deeper than that. Yes, the laughing at Phil writing about the famine is just the most recent example of his "friends" exposing themselves as moronic. I am not normally one to stoop to name calling, but I felt the moronic nature of the situation justified my action.😏 Moving on... Now, should we debate whether Greg hand picks the songs that are included in each poll? I tend to think he does hand pick them at least part of the time.
@delorangeade
@delorangeade Год назад
@@Michael----- You're right to point out that Greg may have some friends who've climbed higher on the evolutionary ladder than the ones we've seen. I hope so. As to the poll, I don't know how Greg selects the tracks that appear in the poll, but I assumed there was some kind of random process at work, rather than there being a carefully curated selection of options for us to choose from. I seem to remember two BSR appearing in one poll, and I can't imagine why anyone would make that choice. I'm sure the temptation is there to cherry pick a certain array of options, but I trust to Greg's integrity in these matters.
