Most American workers aren't paid a living wage in the first place and then are ripped off by the cost of useless medical insurance on top of it. I'm 50 - never had a vacation in my life despite busting my ass for decades.

Wise Old Owl that’s why it be great if the US invested more of the governments budget into social programs so people could pay less taxes for stuff that doesn’t even help the American people with their everyday lives.

@@blueisacolor8747 America doesn't allow dual citizenship so if you move to another country, you're losing your American citizenship. This means visits to the country will be limited (so I hope a family member isn't counting on you to care for them should they fall ill or when they grow old). Additionally, you'll be paying taxes both for the country you live in and back to America until your citizenship is finalized. This might not happen if you do zero work in a year in the U.S. but the dual taxing is what I've heard of. It takes years to become a citizen in most cases so that's a lot of time paying for both locations. You also need to learn the laws of a new country, learn to speak its language if its not English, hope you don't have a change of mind once youre no longer a newbie to the country...in short, just moving countries isn't so simple. Oh, and also, until that citizenship kicks in, it might lock you out of a lot of things as well. And again, all of this is on top of even getting the money to leave in the first place. There's a lot I don't like about America and considered moving countries (thought about going to Japan...but their work culture is worse than even ours, and more sexist), but I think I'd rather remain here, at least for now, and try to petition for change. Ive been seeing a lot of articles and videos about our lack of parental time off, if nothing else, so I think we might be able to get some change at the very least on that front within the next decade or less.

@josephvh1
@josephvh1 4 года назад
@Waynem Lambert that's my point, you made a counterpoint that while Russia was bigger, it had a lower population, which isn't really relevant to travel times. There's also Australia, similar in size to the USA (minus Alaska, Alaska's cheating) and they travel a lot.
@josephvh1
@josephvh1 4 года назад
@Waynem Lambert plenty of Australians drive too, I'd know because I am one. You make a fair point about having more population centres, but it missed the point of traveling a bit; experiencing other cultures (drive to South America, or Canada, or fly, Australians don't have that luxury) is a massive part of traveling that Americans don't seem to value as much as other people, for better or worse.

The vacation thing in my experience is that it ends up being a combination of being tough to get the approval for the vacation that you want and then the work load is too much to take the break. It ends up being more stressful because once you come back you have to work 2-3 times as harder to catch up on the work you left behind.
@annehenry6243
@annehenry6243 4 года назад
YES!!! Because there never seems to be anyone competent in your workplace to cover you for a few days. You come back and put in a 50 hour week to get caught up because all the office shit that happened while you were gone, is now 4 days past deadline on your desk! Worse now, there's an unspoken expectation that you'll take your tablet or laptop with you so that you can still work, or be in contact with work, or check in while you're on "vacation". Most times, I'm so stressed out over what I'll have to do when I get back, that I can't enjoy the vacay.

It's almost like they don't want us to miss work lmfao I've never believed in the American "work ethic." It's bullshit. It's a false concept created by employers to convince their workers that they're not patriotic americans unless they bury themselves in an early grave from working. It's also one reason I'm single. Actually it doesn't save money. If the restaurant uses a soda machine the average cost of a soda is only a few cents, plus most places offer free refills, so the cost "savings" is negligible. The fact is most Americans prefer very cold drinks and like them to be cold for an extended period of time. A few things on passports and international travel. 1. One difference between the US and many places is that it only borders 2 other countries, and until relatively recently, a passport wasn't required for travel to Canada and Mexico. 2. USA is geographically large. As such, it offers a variety of destinations for skiing, beaches, hiking, hang gliding, etc that would require crossing borders in much of the world. 3. Combination of that size and distance from other continents makes international travel relatively expensive. In certain parts of Europe you might cross a border to buy lower priced gasoline or a preferred beverage. If you live in Missouri, traveling to any place outside the US is a considerable expense of time and money that many people just don't have.

One reason we don't travel as much internationally is that the USA has a huge variety of landscapes and culture within our borders. To be honest I prefer the mm/dd/yyyy date format over dd/mm/yyyy. I use both as I interact with both americans and non-americans and sometimes I end up mixing them up. There have been a few times that I had to stop myself because I get mixed up and thinking “wait I don’t remember 20 months in a year” before remembering the format that I was using. The travel one is so simple to explain, I think it is _soooo_ obvious, people miss it... In the Eurasian Continent, traveling to another country is fairly easy to do. Take the UK for example. Getting to France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, or other nearby European countries, is just a stone's throw away; some folks can drive there, they easily take trains, and flights are super cheap due to the short distances being travelled. So yeah, of course they all have their passports. But in the USA, International travel is MASSIVELY expensive for us, and most of the country can't afford a fancy holiday a few states away, let alone overseas. When my children were small, it was all I could do to afford to take my family to a cheap motel for a week about 100 miles away to a place where the kids could swim in a pool everyday and I could take them go-kart riding or to a kids' arcade, like a knock-off Chuck E. Cheese for a day. Being able to take them to Europe would have been a dream comne true, but I could never afford that in a million years. And it has been said by others in the comments here: The US is a very large, diverse place. We have deserts, mountains, beaches, prairies, forests, big cities, small towns, historical places, hi-tech places, anything and everything all within our borders to go and see.... except actual foreign lands, and for that we have Mexico and Canada, I guess. 😂😋

Exactly. Here in Europe I can sit in a car and be in Greece, Germany, Italy, Austria, Hungury, Slovenia, Slovakia, Poland and so much more countries for less than 12 hours drive.. Heck I can go to Hungury in 2 hours or less, Macedonia in 5, Greece in 7-8 hours.. I can go to about 6 or 7 countries in 5 hours or less.. Plus all these countries are so much culturaly, historicaly and geographicaly diferent from one another its insane.. In the US however language is the same everywhere, same history, culture ever so slightly diferent but compared to it's size and compared to Europe it's not even noticable for the rest of the world.. You have so much geographical and biological diversity but it's a looooong drive to everywhere and very expensive but still cheaper than traveling outside of US hence half a nation doesn't have a passport.. I go to my neighbour country just to put gas in my car because it's half the price and it's only an hour drive.. I surely couldn't afford traveling outside of US if I lived there, same as I can't afford traveling to US from Europe.. Or to Australia or Asia or whatever.. Price of traveling to those places is the value of anual paycheck in my country so go figure..
@lordandrewbruceofthemcinne5046
Just to play "devil's advocate" for a moment, geographically and culturally, Australia is very similar to the US in terms of having lots of variety. There's also the fact that we live on an island so even to travel to New Zealand you still have to fly or take a boat/ship. Yet most Aussies will travel overseas instead of around our own country.

RC IT ALL Well for starters, tipping is not mandatory, it’s optional. Tipping allows for the food to be 10-20% cheaper (the remaining 10-20% is for the tip). If America got rid of the tipping system then that would allow the restaurant to charge 20% more for the food in order to pay their staff. So basically we either pay the 20% in tips or with the price of the meal....So..we’re not really spending more money than anyone else who eats out. Also the portion sizes had nothing to do with the price of the food. The price is already standard. The restaurant decides how big the portions are. None of this would hinder someone from affording a vacation lol I think a lot of people have this misconception that Americans have an abundance amount of money and that we all have extravagant lifestyles... we are not the Kardashians. Most us are just regular working middle class people.

I think that part of the reason why so many Americans don't leave the country is because the country is so massive and we do have a bit of everything here geographically. Deserts, forests , mountains , great beaches , etc. Someone who lives in NewYork who travels to let's say NewMexico would get a much different experience than say someone traveling from Paris to the Polish countryside. Also most other countries are smaller, so it is easier and quicker to traverse into different countries. When I worked at McD's, we could take a 10 minute lunch break (!), which was strongly encouraged, or a 25 minute lunch break, which was not only technically permitted but frowned on but also still shorter than the 30 minutes required by law. People didn't want to upset the managers, who after all can get you fired for any reason or none at all, so you can bet most lunch breaks were 10 minutes. I worked at a day care that was different from the one I sent my preschooler to. My boss made it clear that she took this personally and I was endangering my job, fired me because I wasn't "getting along with others", hired me back a couple months later, then went through the same some and dance AGAIN! Without actually firing me, but I took it seriously enough to look into lawyers. No one was interested - not enough money in fighting the man, or in this case, woman. American workers have no legal protections, so they have to be sensitive to suggestions that, for example, those working through their vacations and taking double pay for the week are considered smart and dedicated, while those actually taking vacations are viewed as lazy and are at greater risk of firing, getting "laid off", or just not getting promoted.

3:20 That's largely because the rest of the word doesn't get that the United States is just that, fifty separate states that share a central government. The cultures from one state to another can be as stark as those between countries in other places. So we'll go from NYC to Mesquite, TX to watch the rodeo and experience a culture as different as if they had travelled to Italy or France. Also, this lets us avoid having to go through customs and checkpoints, and don't have to learn different languages, just adapt to local dialects and colloquialisms. Perhaps if they ever bothered to visit the fly-over states they'd have some clue what they were talking about.

@Jonathan Bell my tip is directly based on how well the server does their job. Some people get no tip because they suck was, some get generous tips because they really make for an enjoyable experience, and then there's everyone inbetween. Ok service, not bad, not great, gets ok tip.

Jonathan Bell I don’t think that makes much sense in this case. The worker shouldn’t do a shitty job and be rewarded. Especially because you don’t want the waiter/waitress thinking they can get away with it for all the othercustomers. After I choose my tip and leave I forget about it, so I don’t worry about anything. But I’m not giving them anything they don’t deserve. Of course, there’s very few times in my life (I think 3 times?) where I left no tip. And I have gone out a lot during vacations or just to eat with family. It’s only if the waiter/waitress is horrible and even they know it but don’t care.

You forgot Canada....ppl always forget Canada 🤣😂🤣😂. Canada learns and uses both imperial and metric systems. Why? So they can work with, buy from and understand the USA. No other reason. 🤣😂🤣 Great videos! Fun!

It's not. Its OUR culture. Try visiting Asia, Africa, South America, Europe or even Canada and figure out their quirks. It's all good. It defines what each culture is and it's interesting to compare and experience. Globalists will hate this comment.

As a resident of Europe and semi-frequent traveller, I can tell you that every country looks weird from the eyes of the outsider. For instance, when I visited Romania, I was completely baffled because there was not chocolate milk anywhere, in Russia all the streets were squeaky clean, in Italy the traveling agency had to ask the hotel staff to boil the pasta more and so on and forth.

@@helenfotopoulou5125 I'm an Italian, we often visit our own country, but I've never hear or seen something like that, why would they need to tell the staff to boil more. Maybe it's just because they didn't boil it enough before and there were complaints?

Don't worry, the drinking age one confuses americans too. It's weird that you can sign up for the army and smoke at 18 but you can't gamble, and drink until you're 21.

As someone who studied in a US school and lives in Korea, I can say that it is always confusing with the metric and imperial system, along with the date format. They only use metric here, while I'm used to a mix of using both, while the date format here is always YY(YYYY)/MM/DD, which is confusing when you try to read the date in some places. I once ended up buying a footling when a family member asked me to buy a 15cm in Subway, while subway here only use a 15/30cm for the size format.
