Wrong, entire world is filled with people with different religions and culture, we don't look the same, our colors are different, but that's not the point ,the point is we learn about each different cultures and respect each other differences and move forward.
It really sadden me when Kotoha said that Japan as a country are forced to suppress their emotions. That's why suicide rates are high and people go crazy. While the memes are funny, i think alot of these are serious issues that we new generation should transform because we have the awareness that such parenting styles lead to children that are self-critical, insecure and dependent.
I feel like asians are always complaining about their parents, but that's MY PARENTS TOO!. I think this is more universal than people imagine. In high school, i got the second best score in a math test the whole school had to take, out of ~1200 students, and my parents were like, "Why weren't you first?"
I've actually related to quite a lot of those things though I'm from Germany. Like, the clock that never shows the actual time, I got so used to it that I do it for my own clock as well. Even at my work place the clock is always 5-10 minutes earlier than the actual time. Also the pressure on having good grades. Luckily my Mom was always pretty chill about it (she always said something like "No one's gonna ask how you did on this test in 10 years, it doesn't matter if you fail once, as long as you keep trying" - I've never failed a test because of that). But other classmates had to put up with so much pressure from their parents, they actually got too stressed to focus on their tasks, and often failed. When I went out with friends, even now that I'm already in my 20s, my Mom also wants to know who I'm with, where we go and when I'll be back. But she's never been to strict about a curfew, she just wanted me to be back at the time I told or to tell her when it gets later, so that she won't have to worry. And the magical thing that cures everything is water - got a headache? Just drink a cup of water. Sick stomach? Water will do (if drinking it is not enough, heat it up and use a warm water bottle). Skin problems? Water it is. Gaining weight? More water = less food = less weight. You fell and hurt your knee? Put water on it, to clean the wound. Bruises and burns? Cold water or ice. Some jerk thought he could play around with your heart and now you feel broken? Drown him. Water is our tiger balm, I guess.
@natureuniverseguy88 Indian parents esp those who are a little bit traditional in mindset use any stuff for discipline. Now the situation totally depends on what tool they use, how frustrated they are and how much sharp they are hitting. I have seen parents giving light slaps on butt cheks jokingly, i have seen parents hitting hard with thin wooden sticks, and I have also seen parents who don't use anything yet their eyes and screams are enough to melt the child.
@natureuniverseguy88 And if you mean much older children like 11-18, yeah they get hit too depending on parents and the crime their kid did. They don't get hit offcourse for studies at that time. But something serious like they were caught stealing stuffs from home, doing drugs, or found in a romantic encounter in awkward way. These things can make their parents hit them. Cause parents are too serious about family and they will not tolerate anything that can bring shame to family name. Even romantic teen relationships cause in teenage, people do not have much sense and so they can easily indulge in intimacy leading to problems that can hugely damage family name in society. Or they can ruin their studies and end up being jobless among extreme competetion and bring shame to family. These are the scenarios.

I think Thai parents culture mostly is similar to that of Chinese. Many families in Thailand came from China, so I pretty much relate to what Jane said hahahaha
As a Swiss: totally relatable. Raising with a belt, taking toys away if you don’t have 100, and if you are second « why aren’t you first? », as well as the clocks never being on time and being when up at least 1/2h early... OH and the Tiger Balm of course which is good for everything! I even surprised myself by buying some on a trip to Thailand because it’s so good and use it now that I have my family...
In Turkey, India, Latin America, etc. as far as the discussions on social media goes, mothers throwing slippers is the common thing. Over-asking parents are a thing in here (Turkey) too. Even grown adults have to explain what they are doing to their parents constantly.
@@tl8211 allowances mostly come down to the economic situation of the family. Having children do chores for allowance is rare in Turkey. Actually many kids do work in holidays or something. Far more common in the past.

I'm a Malaysian, I can relate to all of this ! But, I'm glad because my parents isn't strict in giving pressure to me on getting good grades, but give little pressure on my weak subjects, my parents focused good character traits over good grades, they believe, good character traits will build a responsible person in the future, good grades just can confirm good pay on job in the future, but this doesn't fully guarantee on children responsibility on family ~

My father actually stop asking who is my friends, where I go, etc when I was in university, but it eventually became a habit. I just called and told him everything. He was single father. Well... Except when I travel 400km away in all girls trip. I just told him, when I arrived there.
A Southern California reference-point (but this is a diverse place!): Parents are usually fine with grades of 90+ and wont usually slam you hard about an 85% now and then. Hit sub 80 and your life will shift and you may be threatened with tutoring. Parents know all your teachers by their first names and so it's hard to get away with much before a report-card. Schools use comm tech in a bigger way now than ever before. No hobbies until homework is done---even art, job or chores take a backseat. All parents want their kids to be into the arts (music especially) but they are usually good with any valuable skill: video games and carousing are not those! Allowance is not really a thing here, that I know of. Only on TV. But pay for extra chores is common. Most kids barter a lot and some do odd jobs for money. Some grand parents are generous but that can be intercepted by parents. Money for birthdays is often very welcome! "When I was your age..." comes up but not so often, I think. Punishment varies a lot. Loosing privileges is generally the start. It has included a "switch" (a slim branch), a belt or, rarely, high-speed foot-wear, but only when they are royally pissed-off. DO NOT 'LET' THEM MISS!! Corporal punishment is frowned upon these days and has been mostly replaced with additional shaming and psychological pain (nagging). 20 questions on going out is a given but it's far more intensive with girls. That includes phone-numbers, times and locations. Elm-school curfew is supper-time or sun-down without a solid chaperone. High-school curfew is usually 9 pm with some special allowances on non school-nights. Heaven help you if you're late! Advancing clocks doesn't seem too common but I've known kids to do that. Talking back will dig a deep hole fast! Cursing, gossip, even tattling on others will get you in trouble. Our cure-all has to be soap & water with baking-soda a close second.
In fact, moms around the world are not so much different. As for school grades, I understand why Asian parents pay excessive attention to this, but real life is not a school, high scores will not automatically make you a successful and happy person.
I think this "real life is not school" concept is mostly active when you leave Asia. As long as you are in Asia, the best schools, best colleges, best universities go to the ones who have higher cutoff. Although things are slowly getting better yet most things are like that. Thats why parents put too much pressure to become nerd. And nerds are celebrated in Asia.
Omg I feel called out and read to filth!! This was my childhood!! Wanna know how my brother and I learned to wake up to an alarm earlier than the alarm? My Father who is Black took that belt out and gave us a rude awakening!! That was his answer to it all, so we did not mess around when we were grown he finally told us why he was the disciplinarian......he said he knew if my Mom who is Korean gets mad and has to discipline us, she'll kill us....I'm sure it's not true but therefore times when my Mom was not playing around!! And Halmoni was the same, although I was the first grandchild in the family, so I was protected!! But I heard stories from my Mom how strong she was raising four kids as a young widow. I'm a lot more relaxed with my babies. I want them to just be happy and to pursue what gives them joy. I just want them to be connected with thier ancestry, love themselves and be proud of themselves be well adjusted, and happy. But I do understand it though. In East Asia it's HIGHLY competitive, so you MUST be on top of it. I remember my cousin would get like 3 hours of sleep in her early high-school years! When she came to the USA as and exchange student she sailed through it, because she was far ahead.

oh... i hate it the most when my parents start to say "when i was your age,..." 😒 i can relate to 3 other things about time, questions when going out (but it's just expressing that they worry about me esp. if i'm late to go home. so it's fine), and medicine.
For me, it depends on context. Parents can say "when I was your age..." when they want to share their experiences growing up at your age in an effort to better relate to you with their insight. In that case, I appreciate it, but when they say "when I was your age..." to impose expectations of maturity on you, that can quickly be patronizing. After all, parents and children belong to different generations, and no one has the right to dictate how one should live his or her life.
Hahahhaa, in Poland all but the last one were 200% my parents’ thing 😂 There is some folk cure-it-alls people believe in, but definitely less strongly and less frequently than the asian medicine. The over the top control, ass spanking, clock-changing, always studying thing was in full bloom, and my friends keep laughing I’m a white asian compared to them 😂

German here, from a very strict german home. Hitting children is forbidden now, but when I was small it wasn't. I got into lots of trouble and got hit a lot. I didn't like it. Also 1 ( A ) is ok, 2 ( B ) could have been a 1 ( A ). I played percussion as a child, my mother thought I'm too stupid for piano. I can relate so much despite being from a european country.
For bug bites, sore throat, bruises, and strained muscles, my father would always use mashed ginger root. I don't know the properties in it but it seemed to work.

@TT I agree but this is a Korean channel and most Korean viewers are interested in understanding Japan and China, but not so much Vietnam. Vietnam doesn't have much of a historical connection to Korea and it is too far away.
I remember how on every test for each mistake my mom would ask me why and what happend on that number and ask me how I got the mistake.....and so every time the testpapers were returned I would practice a whole speech to explain each one and hopefully not anger her if the score was lower than expected 🤚😭
Asian parent time is really just parent time. Also pub time....many UK pubs will also have their clocks set ahead of the actual time, to account for last orders I guess.
5:05 THIS is why I have almost all my electronics set to 24-hour time display and their clocks synchronized over the internet. The LAST thing you want to do is turn any assignment in late!
@@oxigenarian9763 no, it ain’t the common language for Asia but the common language among the 3 whom all lived in South Korea. The Japanese and Chinese lady (on left and right respectively) learnt Korean with their stay in the South Korea as the medium of communication in the country.
Okay, you already know I love you three, but I guess I have a confession to make: I am happy I don't have Asian parents. Or should I say, stereotypical Asian parents. Some of the things you mentioned should be considered child abuse and I'm not even mentioning the physical/verbal violence here. I was aware of Asian memes but I had no idea they were true to such extent.
I mean look through the comments - lots of people from different backgrounds have had similar experiences, "tough love" is a pretty common thing unfortunately! It definitely feels like a generational thing though, people tend to have a different attitude now compared to what was normal for their parents

my parents always nag me. every day. truth to be told i am not an obedient child to start with too. going out / hang out with friends all day long / came home 5 in the morning / not getting good grades and etc etc. well those usual idiot teenager stuff. and i felt so annoyed when thy do so. ''its my life im gonna do whatever i like'' tht kind of attitude. on my 21st birthday i was planning to hang out with my friends and i was walking to my car, my dad came up to me asking where i was going ? stay back for dinner 1st he said. and i reply i got plans but eventually stayed back for dinner. after dinner, he brought out the cake and celebrate for me, just so you know i hardly celebrate birthday, i just find is not important especially for myself, and he never bought me a cake since 8 years old i think. BUT i was not grateful at all like whatever. u know being a stupid kid. the next day he passed away (bike accident). i was shocked, i thought tht would never happen to me and my parents will always be there whenever i NEED something from them. 12 years has passed and im a father of 2 daughters now. as a parent yourself and u reflect back on what were u back thn towards yr parents, u will start to understand why thy do so towards you. only 1 word. Love. thy love you and worry about u all the time. thts what parents are towards their child naturally. so my point is, dear kids if u fell your parents is getting on your nerves, always peeping into what u doing all the time. remember thy will not stay long. just let thm know b4 hand what time u r coming home, who r u with and all. thy just want to know how are you doing in this harsh world without them standing beside you. and thy love you. thts it. i really wish my dad will still be around to meet his grandkids.

The fact that so many of these “Asian parents traits” are actually quite just toxic… But everyone just considers it to be fine because it is just an “Asian thing”. I’ve actually seen so many people with self esteem issues, trust issues and things like that. But no one really tries to fix it or say this isn’t right. Kids and teen right now know that these “tiger parenting” isn’t healthy but when they grow up, how many will continue to carry this on?
When you talk back to the elder the whole family is going to start scolding you for being disrespectful, there isn't anything you can do about it since the only person on your side is probably just your sibling and they also don't want to get scolded. Well if you actually start getting mad at your parents for scolding you, you're gonna get hit by a cane wow how fun. Like now I don't really like talking to my parents and people older than me in the house except my sibling. That's also why when I sense they start getting annoyed at my certain action I would just lock myself in the room, I don't wanna deal with this. So I usually stay in my room all day.
there are ppl who did live freely but still have all those problems or different problem "chill parents" are not all thaat great,they give freedom you just end up wanting, more,that just a human nature,they let you stay out until 9 you will want to stay until midnight, they let you talk back you end up talk rudely to them and even curse them (i have seen it many times),I lived with this kind of teaching but still i have grown fine , what they said are not all , we had also a lot of nice sides that just make us love and appreciate our parents a lot , I dont see those kinds memories as bad,acually quite the oppossite we have a good laugh, when me and my siblings have "do you remember" gathering, we had our share of beautiful memories our parents so we mostly remember those when we grow up,the only thing i dont agree with is the huge pressure to do great at school but that are more society thing not parents thing,since you almost have no future if you didnt do well at school
I think it depends on when and how it is applied. I do agree, a lot of them are toxic and psychologically unhealthy from a child developmental standpoint. But at the same time, I can kinda understand why parents would do those things though, such as asking incessantly when and where their child is, what they're doing, who they're meeting with, etc. It's to ensure their safety because you never know what might happen to them. (There are cases when children were abducted, raped, or even murdered.) The setting the clock thing is pretty innocuous though, since parents' intentions are that children do not come late. They know children's different psychological reactions when they see the actual time versus the earlier time the parents set. As for other things, such as using corporal punishment, excessive attention to grades and achievement, and shutting down children whenever they get in trouble, I strongly object to them and think they should be erased from parenting. It's not just a matter of cultural difference but a matter of education. There is a way to get your children to respect you while allowing freedom and independence in thought and encouraging healthy dialogue. Fortunately, my mother didn't implement those toxic practices to me, so I have an intimate relationship with her to this day.
