Ben goes solo camping for two nights on Crotch Lake in the North Frontenac Parklands, in Ontario. He plans to spend a ton of time fishing, but instead, things don’t go quite as planned, and he ends up spending more time onshore than anticipated. Making the best of it, he collects a bunch of firewood, using his new folding bow saw, and has a raging fire to save the day.
Enjoy!

Loved the attention to the atmosphere. Really felt like I was there with you. The wind sucks but seems like you made the best of it. What a rager! And also, that little salamander was super cool. Nice work Ben! 🤙

Thanks Adam! The wind was a downer. I'm curious as to what kind of salamander it was. Glad you enjoyed it, dude!

Noted! This isn't the first request I've received for this, so a gear video is certainly in order. Thank you for the suggestion.

That's awesome, it's a beautiful spot. I'd love to have company, but it can be really tough to coordinate. I can be quite spontaneous with trip planning some times. Direct message me through either Facebook/Instagram/TikTok and maybe it could happen!

My name is Connor I've meet you before I asked you what fish were in Amherstview i love your RU-vid your my favorite Ontario fishing channel I'm 13 and my goal is to be as successful at fishing as you are and maybe one day fish with you ?

Hey Connor! I remember you talking to me in Amherstview. I'm glad your enjoying the channel, that's really nice of you to say. Maybe we could go fishing some day, but you'll have to talk to your parents and get them to message me first. Email or any social platform would work! Keep fishing dude!

Thanks for the video. I am heading to Crotch lake from some canoe camping next month. How were the roads up there and where did you park? It looked like a fun trip.
@Paddleheads
@Paddleheads 3 года назад
The roads were a little rough, but I got down there with my hatchback. Theres parking at both launches, just make sure you have your parking pass displayed.

Great vid, thanks. But you're really giving me the itch to get out in the bush. Quick question about that park are all sites connected by trail as well? The map I found online looked like they were, I'd prefer one thats not connected to a trail.

Thank you! I honestly don’t know very much about the lake. I wasn’t aware of the trail system

I was at that site in June of 2020 and it snowed! Caught a nice bass off that big rock too.

Wow! That's wild! It's a beautiful site. I would 100% choose that one again, but maybe launch from the south end of Crotch Lake just so I could enjoy a longer paddle hahaha

@@Paddleheads I've been to a few of the sites on the lake and they're all really nice. It does tend to be windy as frig once you get deeper out into the lake, especially north of the narrows. I wish I could get out there more often but at least I can live vicariously through yer videos. Thanks!

How cold was it? Is your GoPro 7 giving you any trouble?( Like shutting down by itself)
@Paddleheads
@Paddleheads 3 года назад
I believe the coldest it got while I was awake was 5 celsius, plus the wind chill. I've had three hero 7's so far, and all of them have had quirks. GoPros can be a little glitchy sometimes. My Hero 2 used to shut down randomly. I missed my first white water rapid in the grand canyon because of the Hero 2 shutting off. I was pretty angry about that, hahaha 😅

@@Paddleheads I have a GoPro5 and a GoPro7. 7 has better image stabilization but 5 is more reliable. 7 is a bit of a disappointment, have to make do with what I have right now.
@Paddleheads
@Paddleheads 3 года назад
That's unfortunate. With the next GoPro I buy, I plan on testing it out entirely within a week of purchasing it so that I can simply return it if it's got hiccups.
@Paddleheads

It's funny, the day after you left this comment, my GoPro started acting up. It wouldn't turn on, unless I removed the battery and put it back in. Battery was fully charged, it just wouldn't turn on without yanking the battery first. Strange but awesome devices hahaha

Do you know if there is Crownland campsites on Crotch lake?
@Paddleheads
@Paddleheads 3 года назад
All of that crown land is actually managed by North Frontenac Parklands, which is not provincially operated, so there are designated campsites - and there are A LOT of campsites. You can book them online, although it's not the most up-to-date system (At the time of this writing), so it can be a bit of a pain to navigate.

Frontenac Park Rule #10: "Keep fires small using only fallen small branches and twigs. Never cut down standing trees or vegetation in the campground." Purchasing fancy saws for youtoob gadgetry 'likes' doesn't mean you can cut down standing trees even if they're dead. Such trees are home for a variety of insects feeding many species of birds. In 15 years of camping, I've always made plenty of great fires for heat and cooking with old dried (not green) fall down and driftwood and never needed cumbersome hatchets and saws with nothing to prove. Lumberjack skills for a whole other career path regardless what Outdoor shops and marketing channels tell you.

Thanks for watching. I hope you're feeling better after that. FYI, this wasn't in Frontenac Park. Cheers!
