📐I also wish I knew all of this information before I started my interior design course cause it’s really way more stressful and challenging than I initially anticipated😂😂. As I too also went into this thinking that it is interior decorating but I chose not to quit. There was a lot of misleading information when I once researched about interior designing so I appreciate that you are making such content so that other people will have the opportunity to clearly know exactly what they are signing up for.💕🇿🇦🇿🇦

You are SO right on when it comes to architects and their snobbery! Here in Southern California at some colleges, they combine the architecture students with Interior Design students for classes like AutoCAD and drafting. (Yes, they still make us learn drafting... which you would only use if your computer was down, LOL!) And the way interior designers are treated in those classes.... TERRIBLE. Many of the schools have expanded their interior design programs so that only interior design students will be in an AutoCAD class. We had to do a project when I was in my second year of school where the architectural students designed the outside of the building, and we designed the interior. By the end, there was HUGE bickering because they put windows in places that didn't make sense for interiors, they put spaces/buildouts that couldn't be utilized because there wasn't enough room to create any function for that space. So we all took their CAD documents, moved windows, doors, walls, etc and put things the way they should be. Ours looked nice, and actually made the exterior look better, too! So there's a bad relationship between architects and interior designers here. And YES, they do NOT want you calling yourselves interior architects. LOL! But that's the best way to distinguish the difference between a designer and a decorator. You did a great job explaining what the differences are. Of course we here just say, Architects create the outside of your building with 5-7 years of education, we create the inside of your building with 2-3 years of education (learning both the architectural side and the decorating side), and a decorator can place a nice pillow on your new couch... with no education at all. HAHA! Interior Design is freaking hard! It's not for the faint of heart. But once you learn it, you have some pretty powerful knowledge!

“Maybe you’re in high school or maybe you’re younger”; umm mom of almost 4 here 😂 trying to pursue a career for the creativity stuck in my brain 😅 My mom rushed me into a school/job I ended up hating and I deeply regret not following my passion in creativity & art design. Like many I didn’t know what I wanted to do after high school & that’s why I just went with what my mother pushed me towards. Really hoping to teach myself so I have a career that I actually enjoy, especially when the kiddos are all grown up. From freelance Interior Designing to corporate firms. You can also be an illustrator, historical architecture consultant (eg. Projects concerning adaptive reuse and cultural preservation), or a professor of arts and design. If youre into theater, you can also delve into theater and set design. There are many more including game design, CAD and rendering. My mentors are saying that it's really about finding your niche (whether residential, commercial, hotel, etc.) and being passionate + excellent in what you do. And building your portfolio! I'm trying to leave architecture. Thank you for making this video. Very insightful. I wrote down my hobbies, personality traits, and what I'm good at and it all seems to fit better into interior design. Is interior architecture concept based similar to architecture or is it more technical? I had some confusion understanding that part. Also I don't know if anyone here is like an ISFP personality type but I am and realized that architecture is a really mental/emotionally draining career for us. I felt inspired by making buildings but when I got into the more tedious work it's a painful gruesome journey especially for coming up with concepts.

Interior Architect from the USA here!having all kinds of uni flash backs after watching this, ha! I love this, great quick snap shot of design and the break down interiors/interior arch/ and arch.... as articulation is a huge part of the job too right?! I got into interior architecture (IA) for similar reasons, did’t want to work on one project for years, really care about the way a space “feels” more than building systems... all that major technical stuff. Hope you didn’t scare anyone off... but then again, they might not be suited for the industry if so 😸.

I graduated from a Junior College that feeds Cal Poly's Architecture Department. I majored in Interior Design and spent lots of time taking classes from the Architecture Department in CAD and model making. You are right about the snobbery. Now I am at a university that doesn't have an architecture dept. and they are struggling to catch up. They didn't teach Revit , now they do. I came in having taken many things that they are teaching at the upper class level. I feel that the classes are more in depth however. I am still insecure about my CAD skills because of being around Architects and I also feel like the school I came from ignored design of fabrics and furniture to a degree. It is a strange mix. I am thinking about taking a masters from RIT and specializing in Sustainable Architecture. I don't quite know what to do yet.

Interior Decorating is actually a job you have to market yourself. You have to get your own clients and work hard to actually make money. Their is no employment for interior decorating. Nor any college unless you want extra knowledge. But Its far more fun when you finally get passed the beggining stages of gaining clients. I’m currently 15 years old & I have done alot of research. I don’t think their has ever been a job I ever wanted more in my life. I wanted to orginally be an interior decorator but found out that you don’t need college for it and your on your own. I much rather have a guaranteed job for when I get out of college so I can be financially stable. So with that being said I kinda decided to go with interior designing because I also love the fact of being creative and designing the interior of an house. Now I have came to another problem which is the fact that I have to be skilled at drawing. I look at other interior designers map out drawings and I’m shook. I’m not good at drawing at all! But I love the thought of this career so much but it seems like their is more cons than pros. Oher people seem to be having this exact problem too. But only worse they are already in college and going for the major. Im glad that I catched on to what I need to learn I’m gonna try to maybe take classes early on and start figuring out how I can make this work. Its the only job I want. I don’t want to settle for anything less and then regret it. 😞

Not sure if you will see this, but I am a current junior in high school. I have been looking into interior design and have been educating myself about it, but I am a bit intimidated. If I have zero art skills or background, and can not draw to save my life is that ok? Also, if the school load really that bad? Will I be spending every night til 2 am working on school or will I have some free time? Just curious! It sounds like a great major but it also sounds crazy.

You will learn how to draw on your university course- but obviously it helps if you already do abit😅 Either get good at it or just be amazing on computer skills only- that is totally fine, so don't freak out. Look up frank gehry's drawings- one of the top starchitects and literally crap drawings (IMO😂😂). So don't worry too much about that aspect.

@dantierandbalogh
@dantierandbalogh 2 года назад
Hi there! Unfortunately no you won't be able to switch careers after your degree (Sorry!!!) The reason being, the courses are very different from one another and you will need to learn certain things on each, in order to do the job afterwards. Not like if you did an illustration degree and then went into graphic design (which would be fine).😊

Which pays more having a masters degree in Architecture or a Masters degree in Interior Architecture?
@dantierandbalogh
@dantierandbalogh 2 года назад
Not sure if you mean literal 🪙coin💸 or not lol, but in terms of which one is better, it solely depends on which job you go for after university. In terms of actual money I would say equal. Many people think architects make alot more than interior designers but that's a myth lol. Especially if you are designing high end luxury residential interiors. Also a degree can be completely pointless if you don't do anything with it so it all depends 😁

A lot of the universities I want to go to only do a bachelors with honours and the closet masters degree is in Glasgow 😂😂😂 and I live in London. If I ever consider going down more of an interior decorator route it wouldn't be a problem if I got a bachelors let alone a degree since you don't really need one for decorator but I really want to study Interior design and most mentors I've asked have said either a Bachelors or preferably a masters so I'm not sure what to do.
