A tip for shifts- you have the right idea for baby #2! We have found it works really well for me to get up with the babies to breastfeed and let my husband sleep.. because him being well rested makes him so helpful during the day. I got to nap while baby napped, he would make me food, do things around the house, and then help with our older boy when we had baby #2. Then he would do some skin to skin for bonding. I know many people feel like the night time shifts should be shared, but this worked out really well for us!

Completely agree! And if there are couples who share night time duty and it works, that's great, but at most I'll ask my husband to do a middle of the night diaper change. He's still getting plenty of uninterrupted hours, especially since we go to bed earlier now.
@nicolemartel8661

Same for us! The first few weeks he would get up to help me since I was still figuring stuff out and was healing from a tear and all that, but once I got the hang of it he would sleep through the night. Then in the morning he would take her after I fed her for a few hours so I could sleep, come back for me to feed her then take her again. So we both got a good amount of rest!

26 year old mom of 3 here 👋 my biggest tip for doing feeding shifts is to either have hubby take baby for first shift of the night, immediately following a feed (usually around 8-9pm) and go to bed early for a couple/few hours, he can stay up with baby until 10/11 and then bring baby to you. Alternately, if you prefer to sleep in he can take baby immediately after a feed early in the morning, around 5/6 and you can sleep in a couple more hours! This makes it so you get a few good quality hours of sleep every night but you don’t have to pump! And he gets to sleep through the night while you handle feeds. That’s what has worked for us! Best of luck 🫶❤

No baby here but I am curious to understand better, in the late night shift or early morning baby is not sleeping at all after the feed? Or is it helpful that the dad does it because the baby care like changing/ rocking can be long and make you feel you have no rest between feeds?

Yes, yes yes to baby wearing! I didn’t start wearing my baby till she was about a month old and I wish I had done it sooner. Like you said, I also struggled in the beginning with trying to get things done around the house and Caring For baby when her naps were so short, it wasn’t until I started wearing her, that I started to get more peace of mind and want so overwhelmed with trying to get chores done. It can be intimidating at first. I just watched a lot of videos and tried it around the house. I started out with the wrap which is great but can be a little annoying having to tie it and making sure it’s not too tight or too loose I tried the ring sling and I found those were so much easier to use in public. You can Quickly put them on and adjust while baby is in. Now that I’m pregnant with baby number two, I got a another carrier that allows me to carry my baby on the back now that the bumps in the way . My first will only be 13 months when I have my baby in August, so I’m sure I’ll be baby wearing a lot.

I definitely recommend the owlet.. when pregnant I didn’t really think about it and thought it was unnecessary but our little girl ended up being born premature so I asked around and the NICU nurses told us they are quite accurate.. once we did finally get to bring baby girl home it gave me such peace of mind, and honestly the ability to sleep well between feeds knowing that if something sinister were to occur, we would be notified immediately.. used for 10months and only alarmed once when she had RSV which we ended up needing hospital for anyway..

I use the mobi wrap with my little one. She is 6 weeks old and I have been baby wearing since the first week. Putting her in the wrap infront of a mirror is what really helped me because I could see where to put her legs etc. Also, get Gabe to help you the first few times if you are nervous about manouvering the baby into the wrap. My husband helped me the first 4 times until I was confident enough to do it myself. I have just ordered the ergobaby omni 360, so excited to try that. Don't be intimidated by baby wearing! It really is so helpful and I love her being so close to me. You look amazing btw!! ❤

You don't have to worry about waking the baby to check on breathing. I have also found it useful now that the baby is in the nursery, because an alarm will go off if the baby is moving too much. Hey Jess !♥️ I just wanted to say that you don’t have to be so hard on yourself ! You learnt with your baby while growing, you really did so well! It’s honestly so inspiring, especially because you were able to acknowledge the small things to fix for baby number 2. Taking care of a baby is a bit scary especially with all the unknown but the fact that she is who is she is, is because of all your love and support and attention to the finer details ! You are such an amazing mom, you really inspire me and I can’t wait to be a mom because of you! ♥️

In my opinion, shifts don’t work unless your husband does not stay in the room. Mine took first shift and gave baby breastmilk bottles of milk that I had pumped during the day and usually one bottle of formula. I would go to sleep around 8-9 and pump right before going to sleep and then he would stay in the living room with the baby. Then he would roll her in around 1-2am and I would get up with her the rest of the night. He is a light sleeper so he went and slept in the other room so he could get uninterrupted sleep as well. It worked seamlessly for us. My baby did not have a good latch so I would pump after feeding her a bottle when she woke up the first time. I knew I did not want to have to pump through the night so I wouldn’t pump unless I woke up and needed to before she came in but I don’t think it even happened. I also pumped first thing in the morning. But if you breastfeed then you wouldn’t have to worry about the pumping and it would be even easier!

LOVE the Owlet it quickly tracks their sleeping pattern and gives an accurate prediction of when they’ll wake up. You can set it to alert you for anything and there’s a specific alarm sound built in that goes off in case their heart rate or temperature drops/spikes (its something we faced and I promise you it is a sound that’ll wake you up and send you on your feet) It’s incredibly accurate at tracking their movements and sleep activity and we didn’t have a baby monitor so this gave us such a peace of mind. The alarms goes off in your phone and also where you charge the sock which also plays lullabies if it either senses that baby is coming out of REM sleep or the sock isn’t placed properly. I appreciated the way it’d send messages such as “Your baby may be uncomfortable” or “Your baby may be too warm” “Your baby is awake! Time to say hello😊!” It also gives cute little “baby is 3 months today🎉 they may start to….”. Highly recommend it to everyone.

Late for this so i doubt youll see this, but in case you do... just remember that this baby might not like the movement of the mamaroo but would love a traditional swing or something else. Same thing with the different types of slings or baby wear systems, some the baby just doesn't jive with but then loves another type. IT'S SOMETIMES TRIAL AND ERROR and that's PERFECTLY NORMAL and FINE! Just don't give up on wanting to have a "swing seat" or "baby wearing" or whatever the thing is just bc one or even a few of the products don't fit for either YOU or BABY! It’s the best thing ever, saved me with my baby I could get soooo much done and she would contact nap in it while I washed dishes or whatever I needed to get done. They show you different techniques on RU-vid for different ages and she loved it at every age 🥰

I’m a midwife student and there is one thing I could recommend for you to use while breast feeding is : silver nipple hats/shield. They heal your nipples naturally by having remaining milk in the nipple shield. 🫶🏼 I pray for a healthy baby and a good birth experience 🫶🏼

I loveddd the boppy comfy fit for the first few months bc it’s similar to a wrap carrier but so much easier to use and not intimidating at all haha. And then I love the Tula for a more structured carrier when they’re older and it sooo comfortable and supportive of your back! And once again, so easy to use!

Artipoppe is hands down the best carrier. It’s expensive but worth it. I also loved the solly wrap for when my daughter was first born.

As a soon to be mom of two, I love my Ergobaby Embrace. It is so soft, folds up small to fit in a diaper bag, and has stretch so you can "bounce" the baby while you walk. After trying a few different carriers, this was a favourite! It is also easy for me to get on and off on my own, which was a big plus. I hated the bigger wraps, I could never figure them out on my own.

Owlet is amazing!!! Also I have all three of the Chekoh carriers! Used the wrap so so much and now use the clip carrier. My son ONLY naps on me in the carrier (we have tried everything) anyway it’s cute but the carriers are life changing and it’s also so cute!

Visitor boundries! Yes 100% My partner and I were encouraged to set boundries during our prenatal classes. Midwife suggested to be vague with my due date e.g. "bub is due end of October/beginning of November". The week our son arrived we messaged friends & extended fam about his arrival and said that we would be in touch for visits when we are all settled in 😊 We took our time and it was the best thing we did for ourselves. Zero pressure, less stress. Also, a big food prep for the freezer was one of the best things I did. Healthy brekky burritos, brekky bagels for sandwich press, pre prepared fruit with mix-ins for smoothie bags. I also cooked enormous amounts of stir-fries, veg packed bolognese, curries. Sandwich bagged and flattened M-L portions. All you need to do is cook rice, pasta or mash. I felt like I was cheating death, it made meal times so easy for hubby and I. Will do it again next time around 😊

Tik tok was the best for showing how to baby wear! I had a baby bjorn carrier I loved, the boba and moby wrap were both great and so comfy, and then an ergobaby one which wasn’t as comfy or supportive as the baby bjorn! I really want the artipoppe carrier for my next baby because we baby wore ALL THE TIME!

I had my first a month after you had Makaiah and I feel the exact same with everything you pointed out for the second baby. You realise that buying all of the things recommended by everyone can actually be overwhelming - having to figure out how to use everything and store it and clean it! I’d like to go as minimal and simple as possible for my second because it’s less work! Regarding carriers, I personally like the wrap carrier for a tiny baby. Once my girl got to around 8 months, it wasn’t as comfortable any more and I felt the same way as you with the big bulky carriers, they’re pretty uncomfortable especially for at home. I didn’t end up continuing with baby wearing so don’t have any recommendations unfortunately.

We’ve been doing baby wearing nonstop for almost a year now! I’ve tried over a dozen carriers. My favorites: - Newborn: Solly wrap (because you can tuck baby’s head in and still use both hands) - When baby has more head control: Boppy comfort chic and ergo baby embrace - When my baby outgrew the boppy and ergo baby embrace: Wild bird aerial (good for up to 45lbs) Carriers are awesome for contact naps because baby can be napping on you while you get house work done!

The owlet is AMAZING!!! Definitely gives you peace of mind. My first baby was stillborn so when I had my son 5 years after I was so paranoid something would happen to him like SIDS and a friend of mine gifted me the owlet and it saved my sanity ❤

I struggled with finding a baby carrier as well! Mostly in finding one my baby liked. The one I ended up liking the most was the Ergobaby Embrace carrier. It was comfy for both of us and not too difficult to figure out!

Highly recommend the ergo embrace baby carrier!! It’s soft and so comfy like the solly wrap type carriers but 100% easier to put on/adjust. It’s machine washable and it folds up small!!

I love my solly wrap so much, i got a second so i still have one when the other needs washed haha. It does take a little practice learning to put it on, but honestly after a few times i was a pro! It is so cozy for my little one (3 months now 🥺) and comfy for me. I put it on before i leave the house so i can just stick her in to walk around haha. Also i highly recommend taking a look at the safe sleep seven, and even the book that it originates from, Sweet Sleep, even though it sounds like you have a plan for sleep! Especially in those first weeks where baby just wants to be in your arms and that can mean less sleep for you, Knowing how to make your bed safe to share with baby can mean a lot less sleep deprivation for everyone. I was totally against cosleeping until about day 5 of barely sleeping because she didn't want to be put down 😂😭 And that book also talks a lot about breastfeeding and hormones and research, it's great! It's on Spotify premium for audiobook 😄

I meal prepped a ton of freezer meals from Pinterest which was the best. I also LOVE the owlet. I have the sock and the monitor and 100% worth it. Baby wearing- I don’t like the wraps, I got the momtory one from Amazon and it’s so soft and easy to use. I use daily.

I’m a single mum and got the konny baby carrier. It’s a wrap carrier but don’t need to learn how to put it on you put it on like a shirt. I haven’t used it yet but I’m due in 2 weeks but have heard a lot of good reviews on it and super excited to use it

For a carrier I used a moby wrap! My girl slept in it every morning when we were out and about. Super comfy for bub and secure. I find it easy to put on. Did RU-vid tutorial first few tries but even now, I still use it. Use baby Bjorn for bub facing outward to watch on walks or at shops, but nap times when not home, still use moby wrap - shes 11months now!
