LYRICS
Never guess and never know
Losing everything you own
But just before you hit the red
Your best ideas hit your head
The ones you love will call you back
The regulars will treat you bad
A bolt of lightning from the blue
Now it’s really clear to you
Things may not work out how you thought
Things may not work out how you thought
Maybe it is good, maybe it is bad
Either way the only truth we have, is,
Things may not work out how you thought
Use a coin to scratch away
Your desperation on display
A different era starts to show
So different friends will come and go
The one you love will hurt you bad
But a stranger has your back
It’s sunny when it starts to snow
And that is when you really know
Things may not work out how you thought
Things may not work out how you thought
Maybe it is good, maybe it is bad
Either way the only truth we have, is,
Things may not work out how you thought
Things may not work out how you thought

I just lost my best friend 12 days ago. We were traveling together and a truck hit us. She didn't come home with me. I was planning to have her in my life every step of the way. And coming to terms with her loss is taking a lot out of me. I'll never be the same. The world broke it's promise and I don't know if I'll ever trust it again, I don't think I even should. The power of sudden change and the sudden and awful return to normalcy reflected in the song are cathartic. This song captures something that is hard to talk about and helped me shed some tears that were hard to get to. It's brought me some peace and helped me feel less alone. It has been like a hymn to me that I'm always sort of singing in the background. I sing it when I'm working or alone and need a touchstone. I love it. Thanks.

I love that this guy who must be 30-35 years younger than me is able to capture so many strands of the favorite music of my life and still make it his own. Some of his stuff reminds me of Zappa. This reminds me of Yes or very early Genesis. Some Miles. Some Shorter. And his funk grooves are so funky my head nearly explodes. I like all of it.

It's my birthday. I'm one year off a battle with cancer. Though my health problems worked out, the lasting impact from that experience was learning that my support network was much more limited than I expected. The so-called friends and family members didn't so much as check in on me when I was dealing with a life-threatening situation; some even sought to take advantage of me. As my birthday approached, I couldn't get myself to find it appropriate to include those who neglected me. It was just me and my wife today; the pain of my loneliness heavy on my mind. This song played loudly in my mind all day. "Different friends will come and go. The ones you love will hurt you bad, then a stranger has your back." This didn't work out how I expected. But I can pick up the pieces and start seeking some new people who are more reliable.

I keep coming back to this video, especially recently. I love how the last part of the song/video seems like Louis Cole lashing out or losing himself to the hurt it seems he is holding onto in the earlier part of the video. Then at the very end, you see the sky change and other people appear for the first time almost like Cole is coming back to reality after he has worked through some things in his mind. At least that's how I see this piece of art.

I remember I found this song on my discover weekly as I was chilling by the river in my city. Me and my friends were going to have a fire after the sunset, but right before that this song comes on as the sun is setting over the water. Something about it, I don' t know but we danced an drank and had a great time, but man when it hit the 3 minute mark, that when I knew my life changed. This song is most beautiful thing I have ever heard and I cherish it forever. What seemed like a mynute moment in my life quickly best part of my summer that year. This song played with my heart so much it made me learn a new word. "Saudade is a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing for an absent somethings or someones that one cares for and/or loves while simultaneously having positive emotions towards the future. Moreover, it often carries a repressed knowledge that the object of longing might never be had again. It is the recollection of feelings, experiences, places, or events that once brought excitement, pleasure, and well-being, which now trigger the senses and makes one experience pain. However it acknowledges that to long for the past would detract from the excitement you feel towards the future. Saudade describes both happy and sad at the same time and is most closely translated to the English saying ‘bitter sweet’."

I keep coming back to this song, like clockwork, every time something bad happens to me. It's like a mantra, something engraved so deep in my being that it resurfaces without effort, and I keep coming back to this realization. The beauty of the song accompanying the words only reinforces this feeling. It's a peculiar yet fundamental type of comfort, one of the utter powerlessness that carries us at every moment of our lives. I hope more people get to hear this song and have it affect the way they think, and hopefully help them go through the dark times that might show up on their path.

This song man. The chorus really gets to me. I’m really scared for my future and how unknown it is. I really hope that it does work out but it doesn’t have to be how I thought.

Sprained my ankle last summer. Been in pretty much constant pain for the past six months. Whole world seems to be falling apart and I can't even go for a fucking walk... I relate to this clip, freaking out mentally all the time, still trying to keep my cool and composure, living for my music. Things have to work out somehow-someday, right? Thanks Louis Cole, for relating to me... You don't know me, but you're my bro.

that sequence at 2:52 is so psychedelic. He stops singing and the head tilts for a few frames before exploding. Reminds me of lsd experiences. It's slightly off but beautiful.

Just discovered Louis Cole through his alleged role in clown c0re with Sam Gendel. I wanted to know who the drummer was because the rhythms were just unlike anything I had heard. Then stumbled on Knower and his solo music andnI just think is one of the best musicians around today. Totally unique and a extremely gifted musician. Thanks for the music Mr cole!

This song helped me feel less frustrated and alone, and I'm sure it's the same for many others so thank you Louis. This is a concept I don't really think I've heard presented so frankly and beautifully in a piece of music, the fact that we may actually benefit from not being the sole architect of what befalls us is particularly unique insofaras its expression in contemporary music. Lol I guess a really weird example would be that ICP tune about "miracles" (sorry don't remember if that's the name or not, my bad juggalads), but the miracle is kind of a forgotten topic for secular music (except in a very dilute definition of miracle, which I guess you might find in the average pop tune) which I think's a shame because easy to forget that sometimes the unexpected isnt kicking you in the genitals (it's licking you in the genitals). Sorry for the fucking essay lmao but this song is getting me through it right now and I felt like I had to do something in gratitude.
