Your chanel just popped up in my feed and out of curiosity I watched a couple of videos... and boy! Your videos really bring back memories from back in 2007 when I studied in Finland for half a year - at that point my University was still called University of Joensuu (now they seem to have formed the University of Eastern Finland - interesting). I think I'm going to watch some more of your videos 😉. Kiitos and keep up you very high production quality! Greetings from Freiburg, Germany (where I work at - you guessed it, the University 😆)

Just a note that you can't get a monthly phone plan subscription if you are not from the EU, even if you have a resident permit card. This happened to me, I went to a few places and took my resident card with me but they wouldn't give me a phone plan. You will have to get a monthly top up prepaid plan. It's still a decent cost, but more expensive than tradition monthly subscriptions. One thing you can do is if you have a Finnish friend, the monthly subscription can be put under their name and you pay the monthly fee. But they have to be okay with that because if you miss a payment they are held responsible for that.

Very interesting channel you have. I'm Ukrainian by birth but adopted and raised in USA. My Russian language is mostly gone but still have some Russian accent that gets more pronounced when tired. I did gymnastics for 14 years then quit at age 18 and moved into bodybuilding to gain more lean muscle mass I didn't get from gymnastics. Gymnastics gave me great abs and arms but not at all legs. I have thought of studying overseas and thought about Norway (have friend who is Norwegian and is bodybuilder there). I am now age 21 and stopped college spring of 2020 because of pandemic. Have been working and thinking of studying overseas and stumbled into your study in Finland channel. I'm flexible in many ways and know living in Scandinavia would be just fine. Do universities in Finland offer gymnastics competition? Anton

RE: registering right of residence, applying for a personal identity code - you actually still have to do this if you're not from an EU country. From the US, received residence permit card, but the consulates/embassies in the US for Finland are run by a third party company, so I needed to have my identity verified in person in Finland before the application for a PIC could be start to get processed. Right now, they're saying it can take up to 7 weeks to process the application.

Oh you are absolutely true here! I mentioned these separately for EU and EEA citizens (as well as for Nordic citizens) because they do not have to do any of the other steps AND because these two steps do normally happen during the other steps mentioned. Thanks for the feedback! I really appreciate it 👍

Hey Ranesh and thanks for the question. This would naturally depend on your plans and the way that you intend to travel between cities. Its around a 3 hour ride between the two cities by car and almost 4 hours by train. So sure, its possible but if you intend to travel back and forth everytime, its 6-8 hours commuting each day.

Are personal ID # and henkilötuunnus interchangeable, or are they different numbers? Would most of this process still apply if I plan on going to Finland to study after living in the US for whole life, but have finnish citizenship? Also, with this status, would I be considered an international student or a student applying as a finnish citizen (since I do not reside in Finland)? Thank you for this video ;
@RoadtoFinnish
@RoadtoFinnish 2 года назад
So the personal ID and henkilötunnus are the same thing so if you already have a citizenship (double citizenships also apply), you do not need to get a personal ID for yourself. So count those parts of the process out. I would also think that you do not need to take care of the residence permit stuff because as a citizen, you are permitted to move back to Finland at any time. However, you would still need to register your municipality because that determines e.g. your tax rate. To your question about your student status - my understanding is that as a double citizen, you are considered as a Finnish national in all regards. So no tuition fees + you would be entitled to apply for government stipends and the government guaranteed student loans (from Kela). This is at least how ive understood things to work but i would strongly advice you to double check these before your potential move. Regardless, i hope that this answered your questions and gave you some context 👍. Do let me know if you have anything else that i could help with.

Hey oliver, can you tell me if i study bachelor in data science / computing engineering at aalto university, in which city would be my campus in?
@RoadtoFinnish
@RoadtoFinnish 2 года назад
Sure thing fatema! Aalto university main campus is called Otaniemi and it is located in the city of Espoo which is to the west of Helsinki (the capital). Even while Otaniemi is technically not in Helsinki, it is still inside the capital region (which consists of multiple cities) and is just 15 min away from the centre of Helsinki. Basically all of Aalto university is at their Otaniemi campus. They do have a second campus as well in the city of Mikkeli but it only holds the international bachelor's degree for economics. All other studies in business, techonology and arts and design happen at the Otaniemi campus. Thus, this applies to your as well 👍. I hope that this answered your question.

I know this isn’t the right video to ask but I’m desperate at this point. As a US citizen, is the white CDC vaccination record card enough for the guard? My flight is next week. I researched a lot and have everything I could possibly have.
@RoadtoFinnish
@RoadtoFinnish 2 года назад
Im really sorry but i simply do not know the answer to this. What i would recommend you to do is to first check the website of the Finnish institute for health and welfare and contact them directly if necessary: thl.fi/en/web/thlfi-en If you are not able to reach THL (linked above), you could also try contacting the US embassy in Helsinki and ask for advice from them. Im pretty sure that they are well aware of the applicability of the CDC documents that you guys have. I hope this gets you a bit further 👍

Hi Oliver,my daughter is enrolled in University of Helsinki as first year bachelor student .She is considered for remote learning this fall,since there was travel restrictions in Finland embassy when we were applying .To apply for her student residence visa,we need to travel UAE or Saudi(nearby Finland Embassy) from Bahrain.To avoid hassle of going to & from with pandemic protocols,can we just apply for tourist visa here in VFS Bahrain then when she get there in Finland,hopefully by spring,immediately apply for her student residence permit.Is it possible that she can process her first student residence permit once she arrived Finland?
@RoadtoFinnish
@RoadtoFinnish 2 года назад
Hey ruby and thanks for the question. I am not an immigration expert so i have no say on this topic. However, i would be extremely sceptical on whether what you suggest will possible because it would literally go around the residence permit protocols that have been put into place. So my answer is that i have no idea but i would not bet on this being allowed. Having said this, please contact the Finnish immigration service or a Finnish embassy about this.

I think it's more Finland that has strict rules for bank accounts, not EU per se...
@RoadtoFinnish
@RoadtoFinnish 2 года назад
Well its basically both. There are a large number of regulations set specifically by the EU (and the organisations operating under the union) that either apply directly to the member states, or which guide the national legislation at each member state. So its not really black or white either way. I had to simplify this quite a bit not to make the video a lecture on banking regulations 😅
