Something they should've added is "they're always so happy!". It's similar to the infantilization thing...people see them as children and many associate childlike behaviors to happiness. People with DS can be angry, sad, scared and experience all sorts of other emotions just like someone without DS.
@MissJessyeNorman
@MissJessyeNorman 7 лет назад
Yes, and not just as fleeting emotions. Some people who have the syndrome are jerks--while others are kind, just like the rest of the world. People, wanting to pity them, don't want to entertain the idea that they too can be morally flawed, have incredible moral character--and everything in between...

Madi22 :P Well,... sometimes their speech can be difficult to understand, even more so for those with hearing loss, cus their speech might not always be sharp enough to discern what is said. I have hearing loss and find it even harder to hear some who have hearing loss than most might. But, even I know to try to have patience with listening, ask for words to be said more strongly if need be, and try hard to understand or ask them to write things that if you cannot understand them. It's just that simple.

In my early 20's I worked as a bartender and my boss at the time had some kind of agreement with a city to host a local group of people with Down's Sydrome on a biweekly basis. Altho my boss was a piece of shit that loved exploiting people- and probably had that agreement to his benefit in 1st place, I always thought that was cool of him. But that's not the point... the point is that I've never encountered a group of 30ish people who were so positive and happy. Now a decade later I really miss the laughs we had.

I had a friend who worked at a group home as a live-in carer. One of the residents was in a lot of emotional distress because his girlfriend had been moved to another home because, apparently, it wasn't appropriate for people with Down Syndrome to have relationships. Witnessing people being treated like this made me so angry. What gives them the right to deny others happiness?
@TheDudeWithDaCowbell

I have seen this happen with Autism resident "communties" as well. Most in patient facilities are full of human rights violations, from not allowing patients to date, to inflicting intentional physical harm to residents
@happydillpickle
@happydillpickle 2 года назад
Indeed. A lot of abuse goes on and in the "community" where my friend worked, the staff felt trapped by the way the system worked: "free accommodation" and "pocket money" in return for working there. So near impossible to leave unless they had savings stashed away. If you look up L'Arche Community scandals, quite a few horrors pop up... horrible.

Blatantly false. DS people DO suffer from severe intellectual impairment along with heart issues, infertility, and early dementia. DS is a severe intellectual disability, not just a cosmetic condition. Most DS adults have the intellectual capacity of an 8-9 year old child and likely won't be independent.

My brother with down syndrome, who we adopted as a baby, is an adult who cannot read, cannot write (except his name, but even then with difficulty), cannot make proper sentences, would not necessarily do great at keeping personal hygiene, and will never live by himself, have a "proper" job, or exercise his citizenship independently (which is why he lives with other adults with special needs in a specialized home and will probably have to stay for the rest of his life). He went to kindergarten with me, went to great specialized private schools, he sees a speech therapist and that makes little difference. The home he lives in allow him to cook in supervised groups, go on great holidays and do activities or "jobs" together. He is happy there. Of course he has feelings, and thoughts, and he has hobbies and passions. Of course he went through puberty and teenage rebellion and now enjoys not living at home anymore. He is a human being and deserves love, care and respect. My point is, there are different degrees of DS. The lovely, successful, independent individuals in this video are lucky. While a positive and most importantly RESPECTFUL light should be shone on people with DS, it is important to understand that life is not as (seemingly, anyway) uncomplicated for all of them.
@RandeeJ9
@RandeeJ9 6 лет назад
FreakyBo0o yes, thank you for pointing this out. It is a disservice to portray people with high functioning DS as the representation for all people with DS. There are just as many people with DS whom these stereotypes are true. Although everyone deserves love and respect, this small sample of what some people experience is not the true representation.

What did you think about the question about DS being a disease? To me, it should even be a question, it is a disease that can badly affect the person to various degrees. It simply seems like they're ignoring the fact that it is to make it "look normal", instead of embracing it and really making it normal (=more accepted by society)

Um wrong. My daughter has Down syndrome. She's non verbal but can read. The problem is that they have hypotonia and many have apraxia as well which makes motor planning difficult. At a summer camp/school there were a few Downs Syndrome kids and man were they smart! My favorite camper was Charlie. He had Downs Syndrome and at the end of the 8 weeks we all went horseback riding. He'd never been on a horse before but looking at him ride you never would've known it and he had a spirited horse. He lagged at the end of the line and he had to catch up. So what did Charlie do? He galloped to catch up. He rode that horse like a pro. And sense of humor? He had everyone in stitches. He was such a joy to be around.
