i think streaming kinda ruined listening to albums like that. back in the day if you paid for an album youd play the whole thing and over time appreciate all of or more of the songs. now w streaming and so much music its just what stands out at first glance. im guilty of this too sometimes, esp when so many artists have a ton of filler music to pad album times for more streams

1. I used to call 2Pac and The Notorious B.I.G. legends before I heard their music when I first started to listen to hip hop I ain't gonna lie but then I listened to all of biggies work and some of 2Pacs and now I genuinely think they are legends 2. I can't relate to this 3. I can't relate to this 4. I listen to a project atleast 2 times before deciding if I like it or not then I move on and when I want to, I go back to it to acknowledge if I still like it or not (and I don't revisit projects I didn't like as awhole unless I forgot how I feel about it) 5. I can't really relate to this because I don't have that much nostalgia blinding me because I barely started listening to hip hop 3 years ago and before I started to listen to hip hop seriously there was only a few hip hop songs I liked and I relistened to to a lot of them and some I still like, and others I don't

Here's the thing with the legends part. I don't think terms like "legend" or "classic" are subjective. For example, I don't think anyone can argue whether or not Tupac is a legendary artist in rap. The fact that he is still spoken of to this day, biopics are being made, and people still get flak for dissing him kinda shows his status in rap. Same with an album like The Chronic or Reasonable Doubt. Two albums that are undeniable as far as it's place in rap. However, this doesn't mean that the quality of these are automatically linked to its status. I don't even think The Chronic is better than 2001 or Compton, but I recognize that it is more important to rap's history and therefore I completely agree with its label of "classic". I recognize It Takes A Nation of Millions is a classic album, but I think that album is massively overrated. I think a huge problem is people throwing the word "classic" and "legend" around so loosely. I don't think there should be arguments for a classic albums. It either just is or isn't. It's typically a universal understanding. And people claim something is legendary or classic just because THEY like it to a high degree, which muddies the term's meaning.

love the entire video. valid points all the way through. the point about new music is not a new thing. mixtapes (not by artists) are the original playlists and mainly consisted of favorite songs and/or artists. sometimes it's a vibe the listener is looking for. I've found myself checking out new music with fear for not knowing what I'm doing about to hear. sometimes it's a hit or miss.

Love the vids man, it’s crazy how the algorithm works, I been looking at itsarron channel for a lil min but only now they recommended yours as well which is 2 years late for me. Overall great video as is some of the others I saw. I feel you on point 3 even though I think a person can still be underrated even if they have a solid fan base or on. One of the artist like that for me is Pierre Bourne. To me Pierre is underrated not because he doesn’t have a fan base for his own music, he does, he even has tours that are nicely packed for it. I think he is underrated because I simply believe his peak right now is smaller than it should be and his impact isn’t being talked about enough. I think he honestly can be in a tier of guys like trippie(who also is one of my favorites rn)and tecca who on my list are in that tier where they aren’t like Travis Scott and carti where they have a movement and can do arena tours but have a big enough name to pop out on a Festival lineup and people are like that’s a nice artist on the ticket and their fan base is more than enough for a respectable career and you can see their possibility of getting to that next tier with a really great album. His beats obviously has influenced a culture lately but I think if people dive in his solo a lil bit they would see some of his best works is his own works and not just the production side on others. Also number 4 feels a bit contradictory to me. It’s like you said for point 2 on the top 5 argument. Everyone just has different taste. I feel like an album over 20 songs could mean that the artist tried to really hammer a certain sound and he felt like a good amount had reached the mark. Playboi carti comes to mind. His album is like you said how some fans approach music and that’s to just vibe and rock out and while a lot of people would have a problem with that, I would argue that’s the art of that album. His album isn’t meant for that lyricism, it’s meant for you to go crazy in the concert and to just experience it. I think he did it pretty successfully with his lil movement going on rn. Overall music is so subjective I feel your views. Having a top 5 or like a strong ranking just doesn’t make sense, this isn’t sports where you can see one guy beat another and that’s it. Even numbers are a poor way in my eyes to say why one is better than another. Cause it’s all opinion at the end of the day. Sorry for the long comment but this was pretty good had to share my views

Also picks good features for songs Mad - amazing flow, more of an emotional song, chill, and the beat is good especially at the end with the piano. Ryhme scheme is good too Faxts - upbeat, good flow, word play, good rhyme scheme, good beat Dreaming - good beat, chill song, good chorus and hook Old soul - more of song that doesnt sound good until you listen to it more often. G herbo is really good on it 2kizzy flow - rhyme scheme is good (0:21 - 0:55 is a great example), good flow, word play, upbeat. Honestly hasnt missed imo. Some songs are a little to upbeat. Like zack and cody, like this, and kiki Should be dropping an album in august or around then. And from hearing leaks they are really good. Post man, balenci shades, riding around, ecstasy.

One entry I wanna mention is when rap fans who keeps mentioning the problems in the mainstream for being mediocre and one dimensional, wanting more of the different and talented rappers but yet when they get recommended to an artist or songs that got low views they quick not to check it out because of that which leads to them not supporting the artist it’s like boy just check out the damn song/artist the amount of views and plays they have is not gonna effect the art that you ask for

You called me out on this list lol. I used to have an old head mentality during my teenage years. I'm a metal fan and a hip hop head. Now I'm getting out of my old head phase and I'm still unlearning my old head ways. I was going through my "not like other phase" now I realize that I was missing out on so much and should never be ashamed of liking pop music. I love pop music and alternative music. One thing that I've learned over the last few years is: an old head is not about age, Its a Mindset. Moral of the story. Just enjoy your music and don't be ashamed of listening to your favorite songs/artists. These artists are just living their lives and putting in all of the work in order for us to enjoy. Thnx.

I've experienced a lot of these. For example: 1. I've multiple times called Tupac and Biggie legends where the "popular" people in my school has just simply said "You don't know anything about them do you?" and then when I asked them to name a song by Tupac they said "The Next Episode" 2. Once I joined a hiphop discord community, where they said that they're the most friendly and non-toxic community out there, but immediately when I joined, I was asked for my top 5 rappers of all time. I was then banned for not having Playboi Carti in my top 5. 3. Haven't experienced or done that. 4. Literally everyone I know just listens to the popular TikTok songs saying "oh that's my favourite song of all time" and 1 week later, "nah I never liked it" 5. As I said in number 4, nobody around me revisits music

I'm so glad you mentioned numbers 4 and 5. In my free time, I listen to full albums. Either I'm making progress through someone's discography, listening to an artist I haven't listened to an album from before or re-listening to an album I want to revisit. I think I almost always go back for seconds or thirds when It comes to listening to full albums unless it's an album or artist I feel like I don't really care about. For example, I listened to the new Tyler album and I liked it, i think I gave it something in the mid 7s, but I don't really care for Tyler enough to revisit the album. Also, for number 5, I'm glad you bring up Carter 3 because I feel like it's a perfect example. It's definitely a good album, but it's not Wayne's best album when looking at face value compared to other albums of his. Nostalgia is the biggest factor behind people saying Carter 3 is his best. I love re-listening to music because I always feel like there are songs that I completely forget exist then realize how good they are and start bumping them more. I'm glad you made this video bc I realized that I'm not the only one who want to encourage other rap fans to really explore both new music and old music

I agree with #3. People do be trying keep artists underrated just to feel like they’re different or better. I’ve noticed a youtuber out of town try to be so secretive with the Detroit/Michigan artist that he listened to late 2019, he’d post videos of him listening to certain songs and would say “Dont ask me for the songs y’all not hip about this” “this that underground shit”. So once Babyface Ray, YN Jay, Baby Smoove, and Rio Da Yung OG all caught their buzz mid-2020 and started getting more fans outside of Detroit the dude literally started bragging about how he didn’t hear anyone listening to them before 2020 and how no one knew who they were until now.

I got into rap music when I was about 11 years old it wasn't until 12 and 13 I was studying the rap Legends of the eighties and nineties I'm 18 years old now and I won't say I know every single album from Rakim Grandmaster Flash or LL Cool J but at the same time I understand and respect their impact I have listened to their music and there are some songs I really like I also listen to the new era because there are some artists who really broke genre barriers or impacted the youth like Drake for example you can't deny that Him Kanye and Lil Wayne influenced this generation and became the real rap Legends of the 2010s era just my opinion but a musical Legend is defined by impact or lyrical skill and there are some people who will fufill that role I don't know I'm just giving my full perspective on this

I personally separate Top 5 favorites from Top 5 Greatest or Best, just like I do with sports, movies or any other form of entertainment. I can enjoy something while actively looking at the elements and attributes that makes something good. For example I enjoy Drake’s music a little bit more than Kendrick Lamar. However the level of density, complexity, and creativity added to their writing is very noticeable. I listened to Kendrick’s To Pimp a Butterfly a lot less than Views but thought it was superior in almost every aspect (structure, production, message). So I guess it’s ok to enjoy someone but not have them in your top 5 because you recognize although you like them more there really is no objective reason to have them that high.
@ItsVes999
@ItsVes999 7 месяцев назад
Music isn't objective lol. I just don't get this way of thinking. As "dense complex and creative" as TPAB was, I don't enjoy it. So I don't like it. It's not objectively great for those reasons alone because it's just music. And what makes music good is up to the listener. Some people think entire genres are trash. And others love it and think its the best. That's just my opinion though. If the argument is the deepest or best message from a project than sure. But those are 2 different albums doing completely different things. So just saying it's better for arbitrary reasons is kinda odd to me. I don't really like comparing music in general but if I do it's always enjoyment

Another thing with that "What's your top Five" question, is that it's also a very "regoinist" question( if that's even a word lol). For Example a person could say that their top five is: Jay Z Nas Biggie Rakim Jadakiss (This is not my personal top 5 by the way) Immediately after listing that top 5 that person will hear, "You must be from the east coast" or "You must be from New York" or "New York Bias", and I'm saying to myself, yeah, so what lol. It's almost like a person from a particular region can't like artist from their region the most, like they have to be all inclusive or something. It's like people are trying to shame you for liking certain artists from where your from. I find that the people who act this way lowkey want to have another person or another regions cosign and they are mad that they aren't getting it, but their pride won't let them admit this.This could also apply to anyone from any region(not New York specifically). It's to the point where if you list your top five people try to paint a certain picture of you in their mind and and judge you based off your list like you mentioned in the video. That's why for my "top 5" I'm not really listing them in order, in my top 5 all the artist are basically equal. I enjoy everyone in my top five pretty much equally and I don't really place like one over than the other. People are surprised when they hear me, A New Yorker, say that I like both Tupac and Biggie equally. As if I'm supposed to "pick a side" lol foh.

The thing is tho, I've seen New York rappers and rap fans discredit non New York artists while consigning trash like Designer and 6ix9ine. Those two rappers would not have been supported by NY if they was from the South.
@strickyboiwonder
@strickyboiwonder 2 года назад
@@tavonthatruth640 While that may apply to some people from New York that does not apply to everyone or to me. Even if some New York rappers and rap fans discredit non New York artist, who cares? This is not the the 90's anymore where New York media and radio dictated the rap culture and controlled the narrative on how artist from other places are perceived. If we were still in those times then your comment would have more validity and merit. We live in a time today with the internet and social media, where a single city's cosign isn't needed and it doesn't dictate rap culture. People can now go online and push their own narrative and talk about whatever artist they think is good or trash. The only people who still feel a way about how some New Yorkers view certain artist are people who are still harbouring old feelings from the 90's and 2000's or people who low key want a New York cosign but their pride won't let them admit it

I’m unapologetically guilty of number 4. I just prefer listening to music that way. I run through everything new that comes out on Friday’s or whatever I stumble on and save the songs I like to my current playlist. I make a new playlist every once every 2-3 months and cut the songs I’m bored of and keep everything I still like while adding the new stuff. It’s always fun to see what songs stick around and how my top songs of the year look. The longest I’ll keep a song in tho is like 5 months max the oldest songs I have rn are from March. I’ll come back to a lot of my music when I listen to my other all-time and mood type playlists tho so it’s not like I completely abandon it. Idk I’d rather do it like that because I get bored of music quick and I’m not someone that can listen to only one artist at a time unless I really fw them. It’s funny you said Polo G bc that’s exactly how I feel about him. There are usually a few songs that I really like off his projects but I get mad bored listening to a full Polo G album. I at least make sure to listen to every album top to bottom in order tho. One thing I can agree that I can’t stand is when people jump around and only listen to certain songs or features.
