That tip about doing a tedious and repetitive minor physical task at night when you have company and a little buzz actually makes total sense to me. Too much focus can slow you down for that kind of work, but if it's a thing you're doing while focusing on your people and feeling good, then it's just something to do with your hands. Like knitting.

1:35 If you look at the logs, you see they have a lengthwise cut in to the middle. This is to prevent the logs from cracking :) A fine japanese technique that can also be used on visible pillars/posts.

I noticed the same. Then, later I was trying to understand how the bolts worked and I rewinded, and the translator kept talking about a 'sewari'. I found out that is the name of that lengthwise cut, it can be left open or filled with a wedge. Still don't understand what the bolts are doing without a nut somewhere...

Beautiful work. Your son does a great job editing the videos too. Maybe you could introduce to him one day? Do you do an apprenticeship in Japan? Here in Australia we do a 4 year apprenticeship and then usually a few more years to be able to be a certified or practicing professional.

Very educational video Shoyan. Years ago I kept a daily vigil while a house was being built for our daughter. Boy, could those carpenters involved with the build have done with some lessons from you my friend. Many times I told them that work they were doing was not acceptable & money would be withheld unless the work was fixed to my satisfaction. They were NOT happy that I kept such a close eye on things. I knew too much about the project for their liking, BUT, I WON the battles & her house still stands proud after 35 years. Lovely to watch you work & listen to your commentary via your interpreter. Thanks again for sharing your sublime skill & work ethic with us. Cheers, Don from South Australia.

Watching you chisel the end grain of the log was cool. It must be dense, high quality wood to not chip or tear. Your chisel must be razor sharp too!

What I really like though is getting a glimpse into the traditions and customs surrounding the work as well. In the west it seems we have lost some of the sense of importance to all of this.

I am enjoying learning your techniques. By the way, the 'stupid stick' is known as 'story stick' in English. A pair of four-sided sticks can be used to mark out an entire room of cabinets and other things. あなたのテクニックを楽しく学んでいます。ちなみに「バカ棒」は英語で「story Stick」と言います。 4 面のスティックのペアを使用して、キャビネットや他のものの部屋全体に印を付けることができます。

Another house build love the round beams. What is the grove in the round logs for is it to to avoid splitting or another usage. 👍👍😀

Yes, it is to avoid splitting -- at 3:27 he refers to "Sewari: one side of the pillar is cut to the edge of the heartwood to prevent cracks." Wood expands and contracts due to humidity changes in a direction perpendicular to the grain, so this is a pretty nice solution.

You can do that in the settings - it's what I do. Listen to him talking in Japanese but read English subtitles.

@@Blade1310 I don't see "English" as an option, is it auto-translating for you? I do see the auto translate as an option and while it's translating some lines, occasionally it doesn't translate and I'm left only with the burned in Japanese subtitles.

Amazing. I especial like that there are words given to days that certain jobs are done, and the lucky day of the month followed the unluckiest day, therefore certain duties were done prior to that to avoid the unlucky days. The attention to detail is something we shall never see in the USA, and it's to bad.

Does anyone understand how the bolts are used? I see no nuts anywhere, so why/how are the bolts tightened?

Just after he cuts the square mortise he mentions not predrilling so the screw can hold. The bolt in the foundation block he called a coach screw. So that bolt is basically a lag screw, or a half machine/half wood screw that will screw right into the precut sewari.
