Falachi Hervé I own the 2018 Black 650 Vstrom, but fully equipped it with Givi Knuckle guards, engine/rad guards, skid plate and trekker outback top and side cases(all in black).. It's all about what you do with it and so far this is also the best bike I have ever owned for what I do..

me too.... went down to Nice in France, passed thru the high passes in the Alpes and the French Atlantic coast... its a good travel bike, full cases all around from Givi, i got mine from the dealer with an exterior package, worth 1000€, for the regular prize... motorguard, main stand and tank bag and aluminum chain guard, i skipped the tank bag for a bigger windshield and the chain guard from my old bike, also for my heat grips.. its a pretty good travel bike, i owned the 2014 before... drove me well thru Scotland and Northern Europe, my present thru 10 countries from the North to the South Europe, even Italy... and i had 3.6l/100km in the Alpes, not bad, and on the German Autobahn 12l/100km.... lol

I own a 2019 650xt.. It will do 80mph all day...goes over 100 mph for short distances (passing etc). 5'7" and can plant my feet well. Linear power is good for off pavement riding. Yes, its not a rocket, but if you wanted a bullet bike you should buy that. If you want a reliable mid weight adventure bike...this is a good option.

Just rode my '22 650 Adventure today about 300 miles. I have 5 bikes, all fairly new, most more powerful. I still favor this bike over all of them, mostly how comfortable and useful this bike is. Super smooth engine, 60 mpg, handles great and with blue spoked wheels and black tank, it looks excellent, no matter what people say. Have a blue Z900RS and the VStrom looks just as cool. Proud to ride one. And BTW, I never felt the engine's power output was boring. Love this VTwin.

I've never heard anyone describe a parallel twin as more exciting than a V before.
@Bass1923
@Bass1923 3 года назад
Most reviews that compare the two (vstrom and versys) say the versys has the "revvier" engine and that it is more exciting to ride. The vstrom engine's is too linear without a power band. I think this is what they mean.
@ntdscherer
@ntdscherer 3 года назад
@@Bass1923 By "power band" do you mean pronounced power peak? I've always understood power band to be the range of RPM through which an engine develops the most power. So it can be wide or narrow, but not absent. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_band
@Bass1923
@Bass1923 3 года назад
@@ntdscherer You are correct in what you say. I should have been more precise in my explanation. In common parlance, power band often refers to a surge of power that comes on at a specific rpm range. For instance, the inline 4-cylinder engine on my 1975 Kawasaki Z1 hits its "power band" at 5,000 rpm. This is where the power really begins to pick up and increases until peak, where it then levels off. The vstrom's power is described as more linear than the versys, hence there is never a real surge. The surge in power on a versys is perceived by some riders as more exciting. It is an opinion. This is what I gather from reviews that compare the two bikes. I have not ridden the versys and have only ridden a vstrom in the 1000 variety. But I must agree that a significant surge in power experienced through a range of rpm is exciting. But this is only one person's opinion.

Great video on the V-Strom 650. It definitely helped me make my decision. I watched this video a month ago when I was trying to decide between the Versys and the V-Strom. I live in Michigan and test riding a motorcycle in the winter is not really an option, but you can get a great price this time of year. I just got a brand new 2018 DL650XT last week for $6000 usd! Luckily it was 45° (7°C) the day I picked it up, so I was able to ride it home from the dealership. I'm anxious to get out and break it in.. waiting for spring is going to be agony! Until then I'm just going to watch this video on the TV with my helmet on while standing really close so it looks like I'm riding.

The plastic handguards and lower cowling of the XT model need to be junked as they're useless anyway. Add a centrestand for servicing (wheel removal, chain adjustment/oiling, checking engine oil level), a topbox for lockable/waterproof luggage carrying (when commuting/ road touring) and heated grips (Oxford "Hot Grips") if you ride in temps below 10 degrees Celsius. Very good, thorough review... I've had a 2013 650 Strom, and now a 2017 (with a 2015 Versys in-between). The only point I disagree with you on, is the P-Twin Versys having more torque (on the low end). The Kawi likes to rev hi, and seems to hit its sweet-spot at 6-7k revs, while the Strom definitely takes it out of the gate, and up to about 4-5k, especially with the new mapping and engine tweaking they did on the 2017+. I agree w/ you on the brakes. Would have liked a bit more bite, but I felt I got some of that with an upgrade to braided stainless brake lines (I got the +2 inches version, to take the slack for the risers I added). Great review, though... I was curious about 2020 changes...
@Tripleb6036
@Tripleb6036 4 года назад
Hi Barry, I think I may have worded it incorrectly as you are right the Versys does like to be revved more. I have actually just picked up a 2019 V-Strom 1000 now I'm back in the UK. I'm currently editing the video for that one but the main improvement I see over the 650 is indeed the brakes. There are a number of other things too but that's the one I most appreciate. Thanks for your comment.

Which did you prefer, between the Versys and V-Strom? I am a new rider looking for something to handle rough Michigan roads and very occasional gravel roads. I like the look of both of these bikes
@bkp100
@bkp100 4 года назад
@@CarterHurd Easy... hands down, the Strom. I liked the handling better, the lower revs, the better parts aftermarket, *much* better instrument panel, traction control, easier to lower (just replace the bones on the Strom... I needed a special part fabricated by Motowerk, for the Versys). And, my *biggest* pet peeve with the Kawi was the side-by-side headlights, whereas only one lit for standard beams, and the other for high beams. You wouldn't believe the number of times I was told I have a light out... And, finally, the Versys has a funky rear extended fender/plate holder that precluded the use of my Pit Bull stands... Regardless of the above, the Versys is an incredibly FUN bike (as is the Strom)... They're both tall bikes, so, if your inseam < 32", you might want to think about lowering, especially if this is your first bike (they're top-heavy, and can be a handful for a new rider). They'll both handle rough roads, some gravel and fire roads... Beyond that, I wouldn't call either one a trail bike without lots of modification... Either one is a great choice, and you'd be hard-pressed to find an owner of either that regrets the buy...
@CarterHurd
@CarterHurd 4 года назад
@@bkp100 I like the look of the V better, so it's good to hear you like it. I've got a 34" inseam and felt comfortable on the similarly sized bikes I have sat on, so not too worried about the height. I'm glad you're back to the bike you liked the best.. Thanks for the reply!

There are quite a few motorbikes that punch you out of the seat as you open the throttle (MT900 tracer, KTM etc). it is a shame when people too young to have experienced the 60s/70s bikes new. As a 77 year old riding 63 years I find the V storm for above most bikes I ridden because every bike is a compromise. My Street triple 765 RS is very fast, my FZ1s were even faster but that is not all motorbikes are confined to. Ride any bike for what it is as they are unique in design and function. Any bike that can cover every mode the Vstrom can and still run 200,000 miles do 100 mph all day + is beyond perfect. If speed is all you are about you will eventually run out of luck and road.

Think I'm the only Vstrom 650 owner who dislikes the bike. It's big, carries its weight high with a full tank (I'm 5' 7", 95Kg) and isn't easy to manoeuvre through tight traffic, wishing I'd never bought it but I'll suck it up until the finance is settled then it's gone. Mine is a 2022, not the XT version, standard wheels, Akra can. Lazy (boring) engine, plodder that is good on the motorway but not great in the City of London. Peg shout is great, right in the bloody way. "Adequate" good description of the brakes, as I'll be keeping it then I'll be putting braided lines on and changing the pads at least.

I also have a younger brother that lives in Quezon City and has lived full time in the Philippines for around 10 years now. My wife and I have been making payments on a new studio style condo in San Fernando, Pampanga for about 4 1/2 years now and it will be turned over to us this autumn. Being right next to the NLEx I've been thinking the 650 V-Strom would be about perfect for me since its bigger than most bikes there, although still not as big and heavy as my current bike (a 1988 Suzuki GSX1100F) I love big 4 cylinders but they don't make a lot of sense for a country like the Philippines. :) It's nice to know you're back over there, and now that I found your channel I'll check out more of your content. Take care and ride safe.

So you want a s1000xr? Cause I don’t get the complaints about the engine, it’s ideally suited to the type of bike it is. I came off a gtr1400 with loads of power, and this little 650 has a gem of an engine. Plus a ham fisted punter like myself can work on it without messing it up. You should like you are yearning for an inline 4 to me, no reason to kinda shit on the power since it’s a 650 twin

If I wanted a sport bike engine I’d have gotten a sports bike, that’s not what this bike is about. I’ve ridden hours and hours, the torque is just in the right spot for everyday or distance riding. Maybe being a bit shorter I don’t have an issue with the pegs maybe the 1000 would have fitted you better.

Nice review ! I have a lo miles 08 V-Strom 650, all of what you say applies (mine has less tech). Another main takeaway: The Philippines (where you are) has a TON of motorbikes...they seem to outnumber cars 5 to 1 ! Just curious, are those other bikes more small scooters / sub 250cc motorcycles ? Are largish 650cc + bikes rare over there ?
@Tripleb6036
@Tripleb6036 Год назад
Thanks. I used to have an 08 too. Rode all over Europe on it. Yeh scooters are the main mode of transport here. Cars are expensive relative to wages. Big bikes (anything over 150cc here) are fairly rare but getting more common as more manufacturers and choices become available. In my provincial town there are a handful of big bikes. Put it this way, when I see or hear one I notice it.

I’ve owned a SV650 and ridden a V Strom 650. The engine, basically the same engine feels quite different. The SV has much more low end growl and pull. The V Strom feels like a v twin no doubt but it doesn’t pull like the SV. Mid band is strong, but the V Twin experience isn’t quite as fun as the SV. Still, I could easily start from 3rd gear. The seat height is also two inches taller then the SV, and even for someone that’s 6’ tall, you’re on your tippy toes at a standstill. The V Strom isn’t as flickable as the SV, but the V Strom balances in a straight line extremely well. The engine is a little boring, but it’s very usable. And that’s more important anyway.
@Tripleb6036
@Tripleb6036 Год назад
Interesting, although I’m 5’11-6ft and can flat foot the VStom easily. I certainly loved the vStrom 650, it’s a great dependable bike although some people thought I was being negative about it in the video that wasn’t my intention. If I was still in the UK and could only have one do it all bike on a budget it would be right up there.

@@Tripleb6036 I'm looking at new 2022 GSX-S750Z ABS. I'm going to test ride it this week. Not sure I want that type of engine, the v twin experience is what I'm after right now, but we'll see. I have a 17 Base model and love it. The only time I felt under powered was at freeway speeds with a 20 mph headwind. I switched from a Yamaha FZ6 with more power but only seemed happy above 3000 rpm. Being 60 I like the power at the low end. I fell much more confident during low speed riding. I am 5' 8" and have not found a problem with the pegs being my way. I have done a couple of long tours on it and found it comfortable even after 500 miles. If I were going to do a lot of riding two up I would look for a motorcycle with more power. The best part was the price. Mine was a left over 2017 I purchased in July of 2018. The selling price was $5995.00 usd before setup and license fees. Enjoy and stay safe.

I was tempted by Suzuki's current 0% over 4 years and £500 off but that a damning review if only as the unspoken word shouted from the rooftops here was BLAND. ...how many times did you say "it's very linear"? You struggled to say anything decent about it so grateful to get the view. I'll check a few more reviews too. I learnt on an SV which I loved and now have a Triumph Street Twin which I adore but the Suzuki deal turning my head towards a second contrasting bike. It's got to offer something beyond the deal though and unfortunately it seems from your perspective the 650 falling well short.

@Tripleb6036 4 года назад
Hi Barney, I didn't mean this video to sound negative as some people have taken it. See my actual review for the positives on this bike. It can be fun, it's reliable and economical. I can't really fault this bike except yes, it's not particularly exciting but for trips around Europe, crunching highway miles etc it's great. I don't have it any more but I have owned 3 V Strom 650's so it's obvious from that that I like them. I have a ZX6R and Duke 790 now. If you want fun get a Duke. That's the most fun I've had on a bike and I've rode loads.

@@Tripleb6036 Many thanks for the reply. Love that Duke 790 (only seen , not yet tried). As said I've a Triumph Street Twin that I adore but have many mod plans for as a labour of love over years to come. Hi Peter, I also have an Africa Twin now. Personally if I could choose again I’d go for the VStrom 650xt. The Africa twins engine is lovely, it’s comfortable and great build quality and finish. However the VStrom is just as comfortable, build quality is a notch below but still good, engine is not as nice but still decent and plenty fast enough you just have to Rev it more and the main thing is it handles way better on road than the Africa twin. The VStrom is also lighter but it’s not a huge difference to be honest.
