Hello friends!! Sorry for the long MIA.
Here are a few things I wish I knew before coming to Finland.
These are personal experiences and let's feel free to discuss the things we wish we knew before moving away from our various countries of origin.

You are right. You will fit in better if you speak finnish. It's not racism. Finnish people are usually shy about speaking english. You are most welcome here. :)

I live in Portugal and I'm Nigerian with a strong African accent. I don't try to twist my tongue or speak English or Portuguese with a European accent. Those I work with are increasingly accepting it. My boss once introduced me as 'unapologetically African'. The first step to being accepted is to accept who or what you are. You can be Finnish and African without losing your essence.

It´s really sad to hear that you and other foreigners feel that they dont´t fit in. We have a serious need of foreign workforce and it´s not going to go away by not making foreigners feel like they belong in this society. Much respect for still pushing on!

Being Finnish is more a state of mind than a question of place of birth, I see many people who have moved to Finland, who have adopted the Finnish way of life and state of mind, even if they don't do not yet have Finnish nationality for me they are Finns, but they have remained who they are and this has enriched the collective, it is a Finnish particularity which differs a lot from what I saw when I settled in France coming from Finland, everyone comes to bring a plus in Finland, whereas in France we have to erase where we come from.

Very good points and some things that people may not have thought about. In particular, I like the suggestion to get a drivers license first. It's much better to get one in your home country than come here and try to get one. As for language learning, I think it would be good to start learning before getting here using an app. Even if you don't learn the grammar, just knowing vocabulary will be very helpful. And welcome back...

Thank you 😊. Yes! Getting a driver's license here was definitely a pain in the neck 😅

it is a no-brainer, communication is a good part of sales and marketing. If your finish is poor, it goes without saying to imagine how one would fare in that career path. great video!!!

It is likely true that you will never be considered a Finn if you have come from another country and speak another language, even if you become a citizen at some point. However, you can fit in in another way: by exactly being yourself. If you have confidence and live your life the way you like and be who you are you will be accepted and respected; there are really no rules of how you should look or dress or how you shoud act or think. There is a lot of individual freedom; you will not be judged. It is quite ok to be different. It should also be understood that Finns very often think that foreigners are more international and fancier, whereas the Finns are more ordinary and dull. Therefore we don't that easily make friends with foreigners; we think we are not good enough for that, we are not intrnational. A fairly low self esteem is common. And to be honest, it is difficult for even Finns to fit in. We also think there is something wrong with us, we are not like others and what do the other people think of us?

@@Emrys-1 You should understand that although there is racism in Finland, the Finns have also been the underdogs in their country. Finnish became an official language in Finland as late as in 1863. Finns generally understand what it is to struggle, and respect people that have gone through Hell. Hard work is respected above anything else. In my privileged life the people that have helped me the most are the late night tram drivers and the cashiers in the grocery store during the night shift; they have made my life easy by giving transportation when I need it and keeping the shop open when I have time to buy food. That is what I respect; hard work at unpleasant hours to keep the country rolling.

Yes, that is sad thing that fitting. I realised that when reading a old lady movin back to Finland. She was livining in Italy, in small town for a 30 years, and she said she realised that non fitting thing only in later years. She would always be "that foreigner and odd woman". That is so pity and sure same everywhere. So sad. One guy I knew moved to usa, and said that after 10 years is the worst, you do not feel home in your home, and when getting back in holidays in your own country, it has changed so much that you do not feel at home there either. And as time passes and friends move around, and your relatives die, there is nothing to grab on. I'm sorry not having any good tips. Perhaps you have to take thar "being different" as the advantage, make some business of being different.

What do you need to let you feel that you fit in? Does being a foreigner hinder your fitting in? I cannot see how you could not be a smooth part of the Finnish society even as a foreigner.
