It's really a hidden gem with so much upside. It has all the ameneties of a major cosmopolitan city. I came to St Louis via Nashville, TN and it blows Nashville away in terms of culture and having a unique identity so steeped in culture. My GF and I paint the town every weekend and we choose a neighborhood to dine at and hang out and it feels like an other global city in that regard. Pick a neighborhood and have fun!

One thing I’d point out as a former resident of STL County/St. Clair Co in IL, is that if you work in the City, you still pay the 1% earnings tax for the City even if you don’t live there. The bonus is that you get to take advantage of all the things like Library cards to SLPL and other things, you just have to show your pay stub when registering to prove you work within the City!

Thanks for the video, very informative, effective and likable presenter. Two questions: 1) oldest son is going to WashU this fall and I am so afraid given media crime statistics, how worried should I be? 2) how safe is it to run/walk on forest park? Is there an hour at which the park is no longer safe? Many thanks.

I worked at the St. Louis Bread Co for 5 years or so. It was one of the most fun jobs I ever had and I can honestly say, it was very clean. It was right around the time that I left that they started talks of branching out to different cities and renaming it Panera. But, I still call it “Bread Co”. Also, I miss the alfalfa sprouts they used to put on their sandwiches. :-( And our water certainly is really good. I drink it straight out of the tap.

Unfortunately, this video only considers the more "gentrified" areas. But being born and raised here it truly is a great place, and the locations he mentioned that are free, are free for both city and county residents.

the last time I was in St. Louis was in late '74, late at night.... I was told not to leave the bus station, and more than one person asked me for carfare to get back to East St. Louis... fast track to late October this year... we are going to a wedding venue on Washington Street downtown and I would like to see more than just my in-laws.... "Built St. Louis" was one of my favorite websites, also, but due to the population/cool building loss/demolition, one of the more depressing..... what would anyone recommend to an urbanite who rehabs older properties for "fun" and wants to meet good beer and people? thanks, Bill in PHL

Its a hidden gem, Nashville is so popular rn everyone is moving here and dont realize 5 hours away is a much cooler city thats way more affordable. Id love to be able to move there someday.

Thx for introducing the city 1% tax which I had no idea before. I thought I could live in galleria area to avoid that, but no, since the employer is in the city. Escaping failed. I will just live in the city and enjoy it. I guess I will visit the zoo a lot more.

Thank you for vid. We will be migrating to St.Louis with my whole family. We have kids so I wanna make sure we will be in a safe community. If our work place will be Mercy Hospital, which neighborhood should we be choosing? We love going outdoors with the kids like parks. Also hoping to find a near neighborhood from Mercy hospital. I have been seeing some vids with regards to safety and crime rates. I felt a little relieved when you said the place is lovely. But i still have some fear especially because i have my family. Can you please suggest?

Also not mentioned is Glendale, Oakland, Rock Hill and Webster Groves. All are close together and good School Districts (Kirkwood or Webster Groves). Also another good area is Crestwood (Lindbergh School District) Kirkwood, circa 1853 and Webster, circa 1896, are older neighborhoods with lots of sidewalks and families. They have big and small houses and downtown areas with shops and restaurants.

You bet it is! It's a great place for families with the charming downtown area and Amtrak train station. Billy G's seems to be the hot-spot restaurant of the moment and there is A TON of new construction infill going on. Adjacent "Glendale" is a popular choice, too, for people who want to stay in the Kirkwood School District.

It's cool...St. Louis is definitely a segregated city, and there are some clear divide lives. The city is definitely becoming more and more gentrified, which sucks for the cost of living. But there is a lot to do. There are certain municipalities that are rough, but you likely wouldn't find those places in an apartment search.
