Things to Know Before Visiting Rio de Janeiro
Is Rio de Janeiro safe is one of the most common questions i get asked. We always hear on the news that these countries are dangerous and that there are a lot of political issues. As long as you are careful, and don’t do anything that you shouldn’t do. Technically it is not as safe as Europe, Australia, United States or other first world countries, but it’s just about being street smart.
In Rio de Janeiro, Copacabana is the most famous place in Rio de Janeiro, but I don’t necessarily recommend that you stay here. Overall don’t walk around with expensive stuff on you and don’t walk on the streets at night.
Today it’s quite easy to get a visa to visit Brasil. Uber is legal here and is widely used in Brasil which cost me approximately 40 usd to get from the airport to the beach.
If you want to have internet or a phone while you travel in Brasil or Rio de Janeiro, I recommend that you buy a sim card at the airport, it’s easier than to do that in any kind of store.
The most popular time to visit Brasil is in February, when the biggest carnaval takes place in Rio de Janeiro. During high season, prices are much higher and everything is more complicated. Brasil is south of the equator so it’s summer there during the “normal” winter. Which means that high season is from December - March. It gets really hot during summer here so ensure you get a room with AC as it get way too hot otherwise.
Let me know if there is any other countries or cities you wanna hear about, I have travelled to most countries in the world and keep doing so, so you can just comment below if you have any questions concerning any country or city in the world. I am happy to share some of my life as a wandering trader.

If you go to Rio, also go to Buzios 2 or 3 hours by car from Copacabana. Go to Sao Paulo and visit the beaches of Sao Paulo such as Guaruja. Also explore more in Sao Paulo nigh life. Sao Paulo is heaven when comes to food, wide gastronomy. Then after Rio and Sao Paulo, go to the northeast: Rio Grande do Norte, Maceio, etc. I love Sao Paulo, I was born in Minas Gerais, and grew up in Sao Paulo. You will love Brazil if you go the right place and stay with right people. Contact me if you need.

Ok hate to be this person but I lived in Rio in 2017 so I want to say a few things: 1) Copacabana is fine. The neighborhood is quite lovely. Of course watch you and your stuff on the beach in the summer (and year round). It is okay to stay there if you follow the safety tips. It’s a middle to upper class neighborhood. 2) There are favelas everywhere so focusing on Copacabana is unfair. You are just as likely to be a victim of petty crime or robbed at gun/knife point anywhere in Rio de Janeiro except for Urca or parts of Barra da Tijuca. 3) Do not FOR THE LOVE OF GOD call favelas, “ghettos.” That is so hurtful to those that live there. Most people who live in favelas are wonderful people with the best intentions. Many prefer that you call favelas “comunidades.” Don’t go to them unless someone who lives there and you trust them takes you. Don’t tour them, they don’t appreciate that (“OMG look at all these poor people!”) 4) The avg. temperature in Rio is 86°F in January so yes it can get close to 96°-100°F, but it can also be pleasant too. 5) In my opinion, unless you want to go for Carnaval or New Year’s, June and July (or anytime between March-October) are WONDERFUL months to visit. It’s a comfortable 75°F during the day and 64-68 at night. 6) Lapa can be VERY dangerous so don’t get too drunk and keep your wits about you. 7) You are in Zona Sul, not the west zone. Zona Oeste is Barra, Recreio, Jaca, etc. 8) Taking the buses within Zona Sul is totally fine way of getting around!

Contrary of what you may have thought or been misinformed, there are favelas in Ipanema and relatively near Leblon too. Copacabana is more targeted by "beach rats" and petty thieves because is more touristy--there are always much more tourists roaming around there than any other beach in Rio. Just be careful anywhere and you'd be fine. Also Leblon isn't the farthest neighborhood (BTW, 40 bucks seems like a rip off from the int'l airport to Leblon). In the so called South Zone, Leblon is the one before the farthest, which is São Conrado. Following the coast, there's at the very least 20 miles, i.e. Barra da Tijuca, Recreio, Macumba, etc. Those are in the West zone.

Awesome video, thanks Marcello! Also an important correction regarding visas for those watching this video: "Since June 17, 2019, citizens of the United States of America, Australia, Canada and Japan can travel to Brazil without a visa. The measure benefits holders of a valid passport traveling for tourism, business, artistic or sports activities. The initiative also covers travelers transiting through Brazil. Visitors will be granted a stay of up to 90 days, which can be extended once for the same period, as long as they do not exceed 180 days within a 12-month period, counted from the date of the first entry."

Hi Marcello, You mentioned the left-hand side shop where you pick up your checked baggage - do they sell cheap smartphones as well? I'm considering purchasing a basic smartphone so I don't have to carry my Google Pixel around, and potentially get it stolen or lost. My other option was to go to MetroPCS in the U.S. because I think their phones can work internationally.
@LoboMuzenzaCapoeira
@LoboMuzenzaCapoeira 5 лет назад
In Brazil, cheap and smartphone don't come together. Any imported product (read: smartphone) is taxed 6 (yes, six) times before it enters the Brazilian market. I'd advise you to get your disposable smartphone from where you're coming from. For the price that you can get one in Brazil, you can get like 2 in US.

13:07 I don't like brigadeiros, I prefer salgados usually (though Brazilians have a pineapple cake that is the most delicious thing I've ever eaten, there are so many wonderful but very calorific cakes.) In a nutshell, when it comes to food, Brazil takes the cake, we have much much better food than the USA. Also, apartments in Brazil are better than the wooden walled apts of the US. In Brazil they don't use drywall and wood for walls.

Good video, good tips, but, after Leblon there are good beaches like Barra, and more... I would not say to go to São Conrado, because would be worse than going to Copacabana beach, the biggest favela in Zona Sul one side goes right inside São Conrado. But all of that , you just said there, are almost what everyone that lives here knows, that Copacaba is full of turist, actually every place full of turist will be a place to pay attention, cause who want to get turist's money or cameras, or whatever, will go to those places. Some places are more local, because they dont have many activities for turists, those you actually right, are best for stay in. Little details that if you pay attention, you can have good time anywhere, even if you really, really want to go to some called not good places, just pay attetion, dont try to cover the sun with a spoon. Sorry for any mistakes in english.... ;)

FYI, If you are to recommend visitors, when coming to Rio, to avoid the neighborhood of Copacabana due to its "favelas", as if those "communities" were exclusively centralized in Copacabana, you are not being realistic. Some facts, shall we? Just so you know, all neighborhoods in Rio are surrounded by "favelas". The only area in which that type of "community" cannot be found, yet, is the neighborhood of Urca. The area that you decided to stay in Rio, called Leblon, albeit being an "upper middle class" neighborhood boasts its own "community' - a term currently used to describe those housing arrangements. And the "favela" in Leblon has existed since the 60's. Food for thought. Hope you enjoyed your time off in Rio. Cheers.

Se ao menos eles construissem aqueles arranha ceus luxuous e suntuosos de Camboriu no Rio, mas parece que a elite brasileira tem pavor do Rio e seu povo mal educado e malando kkk

...and very recently 40 people were robbed at knife and gun point as they were hiking to Christ the Redeemer; held for two hours by a couple of gangsters? I need to see better, safer news before boarding a flight to Rio on American Airlines. I think Rio's tourism is damaged.

It's NOT so safe to hike around the Christ of Redeemer... most people don't know that it is a fact. I recommend using the train as a tourist (it's a very nice experience). Or take a van/taxi to go up there...

" I need to see better, safer news before boarding a flight to Rio on American Airlines" If you wait on someone else to tell you whats safe you will never visit a place. Maybe you get robbed, so what.....?Just hand over the money and go on about your day. Besides you will make it back when you get home. How can a person tolerate thousands of muggings and violent crime in their home country and then complain when they hear reports about the exact same crimes in a foreign country? Just a thought

I am sorry it seems like not a good time to go to Rio Brazil seems exotic and wonderful but I think not this year. The army is there. Not a good sign Maybe even a coup with the new president Florianopolis is the best place maybe for tourists. Maybe greatest city in Latin America. Curitiba is safe ish but boring I think Rio is raptously beautiful but not now. If you go in a group maybe ok.

Rio de Janeiro is safe is now just be careful. Columbia and Venezuela are very dangerous countries to visit and same Haiti is very dangerous. I wanna to go to Rio for all of the EDM music of the dance clubs for partying. I am a big fan of the electronic music for playing in Rio de Janeiro.Soccer is big in Brazil at the Maracana Stadium.Rio de Janeiro is very exotic vacation of nightlife and partying. I really loved electronic synth pop music can be played in the Copacabana Beach. Go have fun in all.🧛🏻‍♀️👩🏻‍🎤🧚‍♀️👩‍❤️‍👩🏝🏖🌴🌸🙋🏻‍♀️
