Damp proofing the old stone houses is finally done! This has been a project going on for weeks and I'm amazed how many steps there were to get to this point. The excavator came to close the trench and some things went wrong. It was a run-or-die-day, but we made it! Everybody is well and the houses happily wrapped in waterproof layers. Huge thank you to Selina, Mareike, Paul, Mike, Dave, Casey and all of you for helping to go strong in this project! 🤩 🥳

I have just become aware of your channel. I am impressed. This is first-rate content on a very interesting project. You are a great RU-vid personality as well. I don't know how the world hasn't jumped on board yet; a channel this good should have exceeded a million subscribers by now. Hopefully a big-time influencer will hype your channel and it will happen for you. Wishing you all the best!

I am excited for you to spend a new season on your property. I am headed over to Central and the north to look for a farm too this winter. I will be there 3 months. I began my own channel so I can capture my property search. Thanx for being so inspiring. So appreciate you. Cheers. Gina in Upstate New York USA moving to Portugal

I’m from USA and I’ve been enjoying your channel. You land is truly a paradise. I find it curious how the water proof dimpled membrane gets put on there. I’ve always seen it go sort of glued onto the wall with the black tar. And the French drains here usually get the membrane around the perforated pipe and are place in a layer of clean gravel. The idea is that the water from under and over that isn’t absorbed into the soil gets transported away from the building. So you usually don’t want the rain from the gutters going into the same drain because then it will just soak into the soil and building. Well I hope it works out since you have put so much time and effort into the project.

well done for working so hard but i have to say that is the strangest "french drain" ive ever seen as long as it works all good .🤔👍
@jamesstinett6291
@jamesstinett6291 7 месяцев назад
For a french drain you normally put filter fabric down and lay the pipe with the perforation’s down then cover with gravel and fold the filter fabric over the gravel creating a burrito for the roof drains it should be in a separate pipe You want to keep water out of the footing area what you’ve done is a system to introduce water into the area you want to keep dry lot of wasted work 😢

Having seen ways of doing things over more years than I like to admit, my impression of stuff, including French drain systems, is that normality can be highly variable over time and space. As to your last sentence, IMO you are incorrect, not-with-standing my having installed French drains in the manner which you have described. I would think that the French drains from the video will perform adequately, perhaps better than the alternative you suggest.

Ideally, when you install a French drain, the holes in the pipe should be on the bottom, so that the water will enter the pipe as soon as it starts to rise. When the holes are on the top of the pipe, the water level must rise to the top of the pipe before it starts to drain off. This means you will have as much standing water as the diameter of the pipe, and when it is on rock it won't soak into the ground and must migrate along the pipe until it reaches the end. When the rain stops, the water below the top of the pipe will remain, 4" for a 4" pipe. When the holes are on the bottom, the remaining water will only be the height of the thickness of the pipe wall.

Hi Maya. Food for thought. If you still have help at the house I would replace your French drain perforated pipe to a solid sewer pipe . There is a lot of weight on it and eventual fail by being crushed. Sewer pipe is made stronger and better. You don't want the water to soak away you want the water to leave the area as fast as possible where it won't affect the house or pooling. What you have used for the French drain is ribbed corrugated so the water has resistance and the speed of the water will cause it to linger longer. It is also prone to being blocked as the Robb's will gather sediment from the roof over time and block your flow over time eventually causing issues with your gutter. Sewer pipe has less resistance and the sediment build up will be minimal leaves etc will flow with more ease. Just a opinion will be easie to change out now. Your down pipes is the sort of what you need but get sewer pipe not pipe for downpipe peace your doing well on your project. Other option is to kust join into the down pipes at sub surface leave and then run sewer pipe just 200 mm below theand it will have a good fall away from the house the french drain will fail. Though you should chat to someone else about this and not from a reply from youtuber better discuss with amongst others
@mrpe2929
@mrpe2929 7 месяцев назад
Definitely food for thought re the collapse of it 🤔.. The perforated part is to try to remove underground water from the buildings. The concrete round the sides and underneath let's it act as a channel and the slope means it does shift quite a lot of water. The down pipe at the top of the pipe run means it should flush through during rain and also a hose can be put down there to flush it through. Seemed to work well when we flushed it after installation 😊
@sandgroper-ig9nk
@sandgroper-ig9nk 7 месяцев назад
@@mrpe2929 it will last for years but my experience was a pain the the backside became a problem as the water wouldn't flow then everything backs up. The down pipes are also bring in extra water if the French drain is unable to get rid of the extra water it will seep out of the perpetration then into the surrounding soil., but if you divert the down pipes through solid piping then you will be having more water being remote from the area which inturn would be drier ground I changed to cheap down piping that failed as I bought the cheapest possible. Just life experience to pass on but it will fine for a long while built into the hill which I don't have this situation, it will always bring issues but you know it's still a good adventure 👍
