I actually think you're on the right track about videos that give a complete story (although this isn't always the case of course). I don't see much wrong with your content. You have good garden knowledge and editing skills. Longer content is great but you must not let the video stagnate (I still grapple with this myself) whilst some people will watch a gardening video primarily for the knowledge, the average viewer on RU-vid requires entertainment also. Entertainment doesn't have to be the presenter jumping around screen all excited it can simply be things like more "B" role, quicker cuts, or creating a sense of expectation in the viewer (whatever that may be). Anyway, as a subscriber and viewer (who doesn't comment much because I'm time poor 😁) I want to encourage you to keep RU-viding and sharing your knowledge. All the best 👍

Thanks Mark for taking time to watch my ramblings! I appreciate the feedback. You are speaking from experience so I'll be mindful of not letting the video stagnate. Frequency of posting has been my major issue, but I think it makes more sense for me (and my personality) to craft more engaging videos and forget a bit about the other youtube things. You have an infectious personality that shines through and ultimately, as you pointed out that is what matters. Thanks for watching my friend!

This video reminds me a lot of this one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-w5Rfv-eTPz0.html I just found your channel when looking for some growing tips on garlic, so I can't really tell much about your format. I liked the poetic note your narration had though, that's something unique, but I wouldn't mind to have the real you speak in some videos, just like this one. Keep it going, YT seems to have a strange way of testing ones resolve. :)

I do not see your channel as a gardening/cooking channel, but more an artist at work. What makes this channel stand out is YOU and your genuine approach to life. It doesn't matter what you are sharing so much as how you share it. Garden to table is wonderful, so was food connected to your heritage. Your artwork. Your music. It all comes together to make a calming, lovely atmosphere that draws me in. I would hate to lose that for the sake of chasing the algorithm. You do need to make a living. I hope you can find a compromise that does not squelch your unique style. I am for less, being more. Especially when it is of fine and personal quality. I hope this helps. Good journey to you. :)

I don't watch as much RU-vid in the warm season because I'm busy in my own garden. That said, I scaled back my RU-vid viewing this year generally... not just your channel. With all the doom and gloom online this year I've felt the need to scale way back on all media. Others may have done this as well so this may not be unique to your channel. Also, the more ads that interrupt a video the less likely I am to watch to the end.

I have enjoyed your videos in the past. I keep some of them for reference in my lists and go back to them . . . Or intend to go back. I have rewatched several. Maybe you could set up a small blog or website with topic listings? I often find with channels that have a lot of great information and many videos that it can be difficult to find the one I want. For example, The Daily Connesoir has a blog post for each video and it is easier to find the blog post and then get to the video. Please be encouraged and keep going. I love your original format with the old movie excerpts, and the video with your sister. Thanks for all that you do!

I couldn’t have said it better. Your videos capture perfectly the serenity and joy found in gardening in balance with the practical aspects. I love the artistry and narratives you share - don’t change the visual content! I happen to enjoy the shorter segments and variety of topics. Perhaps a rotational schedule of themes presented one per week, or whatever your schedule allows, would be a good mix for all. Thematic ideas: technical tasks, harvest & recipes, art & esthetics, sustainability, etc... I’m excited to see what direction you go in 2021!

I definitely miss your lush, flower filled garden! Even though I'm primarily interested in edible plants, the flowers in your garden were the real eyecatchers that made me want to grow a garden like yours and keep watching. However, I think there's a lot of opportunity with this fresh garden; I'd love to see videos of you planning it out, sprouting seeds and propagating plants, and bringing your plans to fruition. I do like the videos that had "stories" about one plant. I also really love your farm to table cooking videos. I'd like a tour of the inside of your house! And maybe some sort of antiquing vlog. I noticed that I enjoyed the first few videos from your new garden, where you build the new beds, and chopped some trees. But somewhere around summer it seemed the pace of the videos was too slow to keep my attention, so I put the rest of your videos on my watch-later list for a slow day. I generally like the videos where you show techniques in detail, like pre-sprouting, weaving, bed building, the old hugelculture beds, glass cold frames. And the videos showing a full cycle (or major part of) the development of a plant. I hope you continue making videos, and do so in a way you enjoy making them. Cheers!

I love your videos no matter what. The last year's videos seemed kinda.. choppy? Not sure thats the right word. I do really like your videos, but i haven’t been watching much lately. I know my criticism is going to be a bit strange... but hear me out. I was so excited when you got your new garden, I was really looking forward to seeing how you developed this new space. But then, it turned out that all of this journey you had been through had been last year. I do understand that videos can take months and I’m sure you have multiple that you’re working on at the same time as plants grow, but it just felt like, I don’t know, like we didn’t actually get to experience any of it with you, if that makes sense. I think maybe if you had mentioned you had a big project or secret, or showed little bits as it was happening, I would have felt differently. I do still watch occasionally, but more when a topic interests me rather than because I am watching everything you post. I do also understand that I may have missed a tease of the new garden, or hints along the way. In terms of content, I really loved your old deep dives into the history of different plants topics and the animated sections. I really loved your videos on malamar spinach and your cottage garden. I hope you do keep making content!
@suburbanhomestead
@suburbanhomestead 3 года назад
Not strange at all. I think it makes a lot of sense for the youtube format to have "current" material. For logistics I prefer to film the previous year and then edit, but I think the main mistake was not having the full story of a plant in one episode, (which makes the most sense for previously recorded material) I hope you will like the Jan 3rd video - it will have plenty of animation.:-)

Then, your channel simply "disappeared" from my RU-vid feed🤔Could be their algorithms...Your channel popped up on my feed in early Fall. Am delighted to watch your videos. They're informative, your narrative style is comforting and full of delightful bits of historical facts. Your descriptions are valuable to all gardeners, novices and experienced alike. The best part is your artistic take on gardening. The pleasure you take in implementing an artistic vision together with functionality is refreshing and very much appreciated 👍 The songs are lovely, the animation and whimsical creativity in the videos are obviously time consuming yet they add a lot to your finished products. Kudus to you and your partner 👏👏👏👏Your sincerity and straightforwardness are refreshing. The best part of gardening is making mistakes and trusting yourself and nature to do and be better the next time 🌻 Keep making these videos 🙏

I would love to see your aesthetic approaches to gardening. You’re the most unique aesthetic gardener on RU-vid. I feel you would be great at doing silent with captions or voice over videos with slice of life video vlogs feel. Because you’re so aesthetically pleasing seeing your life is already a gift enough. You could show your start to harvest process of one area of your garden. Much love ❤

I just discovered your channel today with “secrets of a cottage garden” (in my recommendations feed) and what I really, really loved about that video was the high quality, long, peaceful shots of the plants. Then I watched your video about beets and was mind-blown about the amount of work you put into it. It was incredible. Then I watched this one. Before answering the question you posed in this video, I went and scrolled back through your videos. Many were titled “how to XYZ” and I am already a pretty good gardener, so I probably wouldn’t click on those. I love, love, love the vibe you have going with your beautiful home and garden. It evokes in me a longing for a peaceful time. I think you should title your videos with more poetic titles that tell us the content of your video is more like a peaceful hang out. The phrase “how to” makes me think of a crisp information delivery video and doesn’t lean into the mood you create in your videos.
@suburbanhomestead
@suburbanhomestead 3 года назад
I think that is a thoughtful assessment. I am not as interested in the "how" of gardening, insomuch as the "why." Unfortunately the algorithm prefers how to, so unfortunately I give titles like that. But I will give this some more thought.

I watched all your videos, and I enjoy everything you do basically. I DID miss the story of a plant from end to end, but I enjoyed the more conversational and philosophical ideas you were putting forward. Your creativity and visuals are always pleasing, and i think you have the right idea going into longer videos that are all about seed to table. You've done videos in other formats in the past that I think could inspire aspects of your future videos, like; i miss the paper thin focus shot where you'd walk down your yard, and sit in the perfect spot to deliver a thought about what you were doing with a particular plant adventure. It was almost like a Tarantino trunk shot lol You also brought in a certain exoticism into the gardening scene that other garden and farm youtubers aren't doing, for example, your amaranth experiment was super fresh and memorable to me, and i havent seen anything quite like it since. The garden recipes are always interesting, because you do it with a Brazilian flare... which has shown me, as someone who likes to cook, something actually NEW to do in the kitchen! I like the videos that are about like... garden chores too. It's part of the adventure, and I loved your videos this year about cutting down trees, and making rope from them to not make waste. And as always, I've always enjoyed your charming music from taproot in your videos :) Olha o alho still gives me goosebumps! I hum it every time i'm chopping garlic for a dish i'm looking forward to eating

I personally love your style and wish I would have found your channel long ago as it’s so incredibly unique. As a newer subscriber, I’m really enjoying your content. I may be wrong-I’ve only discovered your channel this past fall-but I feel like yes, people want to see the plant beginning to end, but I personally love the viewer pull-through of wondering how the garden will be doing in the next video. I’m sure growing the whole plant in one video will help with searches/titles/etc., but I love snippets of the garden in each video. It sort of gives a “to be continued” feel. Frequent garden updates are some of my favorite videos and blogs that inspire me. I love seeing your beautiful home, garden cages, your dishes, paintings-they make me feel like I’m slipping away to a different time. I’d also love to see some of the process of recording your music. Thought I’d throw it out there! Whatever you do, I wish you success and keep up the lovely content!

No. I like the little niche channels that are genuine and real, very few large channels, ( I tend to leave when things get to big)... with a unique view thru the prism that's still true but different. The gardening videos and seeing your take on things and what you've learned really pulls me in. However, I get these small tastes for other things in some of your videos that I want more of. I wish I could see more of you working on your new home, or your cooking with your produce, even just your thoughts while going to some yard sales or similar places and seeing things you think would be of use to you. I found your videos about a week ago and to be totally honest, what attracted me the most was how different your channel was to others. While the big channels may have big personalities and lots of in the garden talk, your videos are more carefully crafted, finessed and VERY relaxing to the ear. You're style is also UNMATCHED. I was mainly a unboxing channel and I started vlogging and now do a very candid and raw vlog which has a lot of container gardening every week and it seems that and fashion is what my viewers want, it’s weird but I think all channels go through a sort of morphing as they developed and learn. I've only just discovered gardening / your videos and only subscribed last week. I find the videos charming and artistic. I love seeing pictures zoomed out, so you can see the full set up of the garden, I would love to know how you source your garden beds and trellis pyramids (second hand antiques?) or anything about your house and the renovations you undertake, (like the brick path video) taking us to second hand shops would be great. The garden to table vids are fantastic, again as much to see the kitchen and your serving ware as the food. I resent that the artistic souls with so much talent and passion like yourself have to change to suit the fast paced junk we as consumers binge watch, just to get seen. I hope you keep going!

First of all: I really love your videos, your editing style and the storys you tell with them. But I am one of the people that stopped watching a lot of videos this year. I feel bad about it because you can feel the amount of dedication you put in each video and they are still great videos. For me it was the problems you mentioned in this video. Making smaller parts out of one crop felt always as the video was incomplete, and after a while I stopped caring to watch the next episode, because watching the next episode didn't mean that I will get the result, the finale. I like Vlog style garden Videos, where it feels like you are in the garden with the creator. Just a little escapism - and with longer videos that works just better. (8 minutes is not enough to escape in contrast to f.e 20 minutes). But filming and editing 8 minutes is already so much work so it is understandable if these extra long videos take more time or maybe aren't doable. (I don't know if 2 weekly uploads mess with the engagement too much). But I wouldn't mind if you upload less and take the time you need to create your videos. Creativity and creating stuff takes time, something social media makes us forget. Would never stop watching just because you decide to upload less. A smaller garden is maybe a part of it too, because I love watching garden tours. But on the other hand I feel very curious how you establish a completely new garden. I think your garden will become a wonderful place the next years and I want to watch it grow more impressive each year :). More garden to table content sounds like an awesome idea. I also love when you get inventive or crafty, with the materials around you. So all your ideas for changing your videos alrady sound like really good improvements. I wish you the best for you, your garden and your channel

@@suburbanhomestead I agree with the above poster, and if I may add, it wouldn't have been as bad, if you used more of the other RU-vid resources, like the short "stories", wich are usually informal and require less effort to edit. Community posts are welcomed, too, for photos, polls, and just to say hi and have more of a daily presence in our feeds. I think you do a lot of cool D-I-Y stuff, like fences, for example, maybe you could look into making some sort of "tutorial" or video guides about building with our own available materials. You hit the nail on the head. I prefer seeing videos that show the results at the end. Over and over on other growing channels they start a project and never actually show you the end result. Certainly it takes an entire growing season for that particular format. But to make viewers go in and search dozens or even hundreds of videos to try and find the end is not a very kind thing to do from a production standpoint. More so, it is completely unfathomable to not even show the end result. I'm also interested in learning how to prepare foods that are grown. most of us grow the same things over and over again in those were the things that we grew up on. I'm reluctant to try growing new things if I'm not sure what to do with it at the end. So you're continued format of garden to plate is awesome!

Hello, I am new to your channel and like others who have just discovered or are still to discover your video's Im very grateful. I was browsing how to choose flowers for my garden (being new to gardening) and your video on your cottage garden blew me away, there was so much detail and rationale but you put it all together to make it seem so simple with beautiful results. Its so much more than I was looking for. You broke down variation in colour, complimentary colour, flower types, sizes, heights, complimentary flowers for different feel and flow, I am learning so much and growing in appreciation everytime I go back to view it. I like the longer video's but I know they take time, I like hearing your story and how you make use of everything in your space and that you don't time lapse. It all feels authentic and though its a lot of work you make it relaxing, I like how your engagement feels more like you want a conversation. I had to increase the size of my garden from 40 square feet to 2400 sq feet in order to support others which left me with no time to watch a lot of videos. I love your gardening and cooking and mellow persona, so don't think its you or your format, its the treacherous time we are living in.
