I've wanted a hedgehog since I was 12....I'm 22 now and still want one. Should be getting one this summer. Excited to own a cute and "angry" spike ball 😂 in up all night just like them so it works out

I know this is old, but I'm good as long as they arent crickets, I had lizards, and so we ordered live crickets a couple times, and some would get free, and I hated it.
Katie K. That happened with us with the bearded dragons (sadly one died from age we think) but now we stick the worms,which is also good bc hedgehogs can enjoy worms like the bearded dragon we have
Great video, but hedgehogs are actually classified as opportunistic omnivores. Not insectivores. Yes they still should have live insects because they GREATLY benefit from them.
Heating is also very important for hedgehogs. If they are not warm enough (between 71-80 degrees I believe but im not 100% sure so do ur research!) they can go into hibernation which can be deadly for them. If they do this, please take them to a vet and get them warm. I recommend getting a space heater, heating pad, or heating lamp (without a light) and a thermometer in their cage to make sure it is a safe temperature for them :)
@@katybing3452 1. Nocturnal is an ok word, but, they really are more crepuscular (active at dawn and dusk). 2. Food should consist of high quality cat food and insects mostly (most "hedgehog foods" are crap). They are not actually insectivores though. I feed high quality cat food with freezedried insects mixed in. Live insects and other treats made up a very small portion of my hedgehogs diets (many of my hedgehogs wouldn't accept live). 3. Their lifespan is really 4 to 6 years (on the low end). I've kept and bred over 50 hedgehogs. Every single hedgehog I kept lived over 6 years, and, a few over 8 years (most lived 7 years). Sadly, lifespan is often assumed to be lower due to so many hedgehogs that have poor care and die younger than they should. 4. Room temperature is not good. 65F is horrible for them! They need between 75F and 82F. 77F is a good temperature for them. Any under 74F is in the "danger zone" and not safe. Hope this helps. Wasn't trying to sound rude. Just, I am the original "PetTuber". I've worked as a vet tech. I've kept and bred countless species. I always research extensively. The most important thing to share with your viewers is temperature. 65F will kill them. It will make them act like they have wobbly hedgehog syndrome (slow and shaky movements). WHS is often misdiagnosed by owners who keep their hedgehogs too cold and end up losing them. 75F to 80F is good for most owners to aim for. A simple small ceramic heat emitter, or, red reptile heatlight of 25 to 50 watts work great (some will say red reptile headlights will disrupt their sleep, but, this simply isn't true, at least in my experience). Always test cage temperature. Don't just throw on a light and call it good. Never use any type of heatpad, or, under cage heating with a hedgehog. @@rizzat Well, I've kept and bred over 50 hedgehogs. Every hedgehogs I kept lived over 6 years, and, a few over 8 years! I used mostly Instinct, Royal Canin, or Blue Buffalo's "Wilderness", or, "Grain Free" dry foods (Do not use other Blue Buffalo options, they have some that aren't as good of quality, like their "Blue Basic"). Into their dry cat food I mixed in freezedried mealworms (or other insects). You can get these online from Amazon, or, other sellers for very low cost. That made up the majority of their food. I did also bake a few chicken breasts, unseasoned of course, cut them up, and froze some, and fridged some. I would use those are treats. I did offer some live insects sometimes, but, found most my hedgehogs didn't really go after live insects. Which is why the freezedried insects in the cat food worked great. I rarely fed fruits or veggies. Almost never really. Maybe once a month.
Earthling1984 the breeder in my area actually told me that freeze dried insects can be a risk for hedgehogs as they are not as easily digested and can cause health problems. This can lead to emergency surgery. She recommends live insects instead.
#1 Dad SAME. I was asking for a ferret for yrs till I gave up and literally today I asked about a hedgehog and my mom said yes. But we have to wait till my hamster dies bc he landlord in our apartment won’t allow many animals- sad tho

I moved to California for college. From what I know if u want to own one talk to Fish and Wildlife in CA. see what they say. If I get an animal here that's illegal back home I know I'd have to talk to my home state fish and wildlife about a permit
I as live in Arizona and I agree AC is a most but it can get cool also. I use a thermostat with a thermometer on it. It is set to 78 and I have that attached to a warming lamp above the cage. Obviously they’re nocturnal the bulb I’m using doesn’t produce light only heat. I fed my hedgehog sonic cat food but in Tucson there’s an exotic pet store that actually sells hedgehog food.

you don't have to feed your hedgehog only insects, they will eat cat food too (cat food isn't bad for them). And they also like to eat apples, you just need to cut up and apple to small enough pieces for them. (Again, apples aren't bad for them either).
my family has an iguana so the exotic stuff doesn’t bother them thankfully and we had bunnies and they need another bunny for company so having one works
My hedgehog is the best!! I love her a lot!! But I can’t ever get her out I’ve had her since 1/9/17 and every time I get her out she runs and goes to sleep no matter what time I get her up I hate it cause I want to play with her but she doesn’t like it, this is my second hedgehog and my last one loves running outside and everything but his one likes to be left alone
Hedgehog food actually isn’t nutritionally balanced or recommended. A high quality cat food is a much better option. Hedgehog foods can also contain harmful ingredients like ground aspen and wheat, which should be avoided.
I am Getting a hedge hog and you are supposed to do research before getting animals so I already knew most of this stuff but it was helpful. my hedge hog is going to be a baby but not to little they still need mom's but they will be trained to the litter box anyways thank you! My hedge hog will be named Nutella!💛💛

Ive always wanted an unfriendly pet, thats covered in painful spikes, craps everywhere, spits on itself, and keeps me up all night. It's just a shame that they dont have rabies too.
cons are most of the time overstated for precautions. if you get a hedgehog from a reliable pet store, breeder, they dont get sick that often. they dont greet you when you get back home, but they dont mind sleeping on your hand. theyre dont get overly attached to humans, but some of them will recognize you. some people say theyre almost blind but my hedgehog runs to me from the other side of the apartment. theyre nocturnal but they sleep like 21 hours a day.
I have a bearded dragon and two hamsters I think I’m all right I am not afraid of insects I always wait till like two in the morning just to see my hamsters Plus my hamsters live in 50 gallon tanks each
a lot of male hedgehogs will masturbate. their semen is can be very difficult to remove from bedding and sometimes even their fur. if you want to avoid this, you could get a female. some females will also masturbate but are far more discreet about it. downside is that females can be prone to cancer of the lady bits. both sexes have cons i suppose, so its really up to you what youre willing to deal with.
