"Things you never noticed?" How could anyone have MISSED the Spanish Flu in DA???
@marigeobrien
@marigeobrien 3 года назад
As for this critique, it bears all the foibles of typical modernist thinking. Saying that Robert was, "not a nice guy," seems entirely, well... here's the thing. Robert represents a romanticized view of the old ways of thinking. He and Violet, as well as Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes all present the past. By "romanticized," I mean softer, friendlier. In fact, a man in his position would be much sterner and never allow the kind of latitude he allows to his wife and children, especially because they were women. As any historian will tell you, the period between the 1st and 2nd World Wars was considered the first great wave of modernization in western civilization; both technologically and culturally. So if you think he's "not a nice guy," it only shows how much we, as a civilization, have changed since then. Because the truth is, if men like Robert Crawley existed at all, they were very rare.

It getting really old of people trying to critique the character of people of old through a modern lens. They’re never gonna measure up and will always be seen as “problematic”. Perfect ex: Lord Grandtham mismanagement of his wife’s money. Once they got married it became HIS money as head of the household. And by the convention of the time he didn’t have to ask her permission or input on anything. That’s just how it was back then, like it not. To try and say such concepts shouldn’t be depicted in HISTORICAL pieces because they are “problematic” by today’s standard leads to less authentic, and in my opinion, less enjoyable shows that depict the past. If we depict everything through a modern lens it’s just modern people, depicting modern life and culture while wearing historic clothes and using historic set pieces.

I can't even talk about my childhood and teen years without someone fighting with me like a toddler. This is another example of that, acting like they know how life was in 1920 or 1912 rather.

“Woke Analysis” is perfect description of narrator. Sadly, we see/read/hear much of the same by media and even some who claim to be historians! The utter ignorance of history and the lack of ability to analyze and understand any historical situation is appalling. It’s what happens when you tear down the past thinking “yeah, that’ll fix it…now we’ve destroyed that bad stuff”.. I feel sorry for younger generations who are so woefully lacking in knowledge and will never understand how to deal with any serious crisis because they’ll have no base of comparison to work from. They’ll all think government will fix it. Very, very sad.

Quite a number of inaccuracies in this video, starting with the utterly ridiculous comparing of COVID-19 (currently deaths are 4,196,634 as of today - July 28, 2021)with the Spanish Flu (an estimated 50 to 100 million fatalities in just a couple of years). And it simply went down hill from there. Besides, listening to the irritating voice of the narrator for 11 minutes is comparable to hearing fingernails scratching across the surface of a blackboard the same amount of time. Definitely not one of the better Downton Abbey videos out here on RU-vid.

I didn't like how Mary treated Edith. And I was happy when Edith finally told her off. I was feeling that moment. And Mary deserved whatever wrath that Edith dished out on her that day. Well, the dowager and Isabel was okay with me. I liked their relationship. At first it was not a good start but in the middle they started really having a real friendship. And yes, I did notice the pandemic episode. I was wondering where are their mask. But if I can remember correctly, the Spanish flu pandemic, it was the same as now. They didn't figure out later that they needed to wear masks. I love love love this show. I have not seen the movie yet. My parents are technically British Guyenese. Because the British were still ruling our country when they were born. I remembered a little story my father told me about when he was a little boy. The queen came to visit and he was chasing behind the train to touch her hand. But his slippers burst and he fell on the tracks. I thought it was funny.😄 I am watching the show for the fourth time.😊

He wasn't like, you don't know what I have lost in Sybil.🙄 Cause he loved Sybil a lot. 😢 Whereas, Mary took her precious time in getting an answer to Matthew on a Yes or a no. Tom knew from the first time he saw Sybil. And I also liked the scene where Sybil came in with the new outfit and Tom was peering through the window.😄

Yes. I hate Mary when she "hits" Edith almost everytime. Sister rivalry as it is. And Mathew some how softened Mary against Edith. He do stop her from harming Edith. One time Mathew told Mary that she is horrid if she wants to. But well, Mathew loves her anyway. 😅 But to be fair, Mary is kind on some other matters esp. With Anna and Mr. Carson. But Sybil is the kindest that even made impact. On the other hand, I love how Violet and Isobel blossomed to a friendship that loves to disagree. And even in the end, like an older sister, Violet helped Isobel to flight for Lord Merton; literally barging into Lord Merton's house. I do see that some how, that is Mary and Edith when they grow older. Their flaws only made them characters that are protaginsts yet anatagonists at the same time. There is no real good and evil character.

Mary and Edith are sisters, probably close in age. Also, their personalities are almost completely opposite so they will definitely clash. They could be acting as my sister and me. I’m 66 and my sister is 69, we still go at it from time to time. Violet and Isobel are the best, each trying to out do the other with jabs, must have the last word and always be right. The UK and other European countries began the buying, selling and abuse of enslaved people of color, and many reports indicate that the UK classism is still strong in the UK - classism, the the US does not have (prejudices yes but the US does not have a Class system) Unfortunately as in every country and civilization since time immemorial there is a distinction between the haves and the have nots.

The Spanish Flu (started in Kansas, identified in Spain) lasted for at least 3 years through 1920, which was its most deadly year because people became bored or careless with protocols for keeping themselves and others safe from the airborne virus. I beg to differ on the female relationships. Many pairs of sisters do not get along well or even like one another in the real world. Isobel & Violet are, in fact, friends and develop that deep and abiding friendship over the course of working together in the village and being exposed to one another within the family through joy and tragedy. O'Brien is a bad egg, so that's that.

I like very much this series because it's so relaxing and an escape from the vulgarity of today's broadcasts and films. To listen to, it is very useful to improve the languange for a foreigner and perhaps... also for a native, as well as dubbed that can even improve my own language ! But the narrative, I'm sorry to say, it is not up to par when compared to the care of the settings, costumes and dialogues, but more like that of soap opera. I have the impression that the script is improvised little by little, and not written in full as in a novel. I think that certain scenes or episodes are functional to show the mentality and the living conditions of the time, but poorly developed

Here's the thing that commentaries like this one tend to get wrong. Downton Abbey is not a documentary about a real house, family, and servants. They are telling a story. The medals, the age discrepancies, and the rest are secondary to a good story. Also, Robert is now a horrible person but the bitchy fighting of the female pairs is unrealistic? Really? When did women stop being bitchy to each other? Or are we to ignore it and pretend it doesn't happen anymore?

The movie was simply embarrassing and can only be considered parody. What about these: All those other servants in the background, especially in the kitchen, but who never speak or even have names, story lines or a place at the table? The supposed heir who died on the Titanic, re-appears and then goes vowing not to give up and then is never seen again. Was this the writers' way of proving he was a fake, or did the heir just decide that the house, property and his inheritance weren't worth the effort? The footman who sneered at the fancy food leftover after Edith's failed wedding and asks "Is there any bread and cheese?" suddenly just a few episodes later claims he's always been interested in food and wants to become a chef? Maybe he was only interested in preparing the food?

A little caution must be exercised when looking at this series, through the modern lens. It is a beautifully crafted entertainment, but certainly not a historically accurate document. At first glance, the owners of Downton Abbey seem to be rich. (Although the bumbling idiot who is in charge of the family finances, does his best to get rid of it, as best he can as the story progresses.) This "Family Wealth" perception, is slightly wrong. It wasn't just that they had some family money, but in the actual period, the house-staff and villagers in reality, were absolutely the poverty-stricken poor. They were kept that way by the owners of grand houses who used their labour and paid them poorly for their service. The Titanic episode shows this very clearly if you have a look at the cost of the tickets. One, 3rd class ticket, one-way, cost about $30.00 or £800.00 in 2023. The best first-class tickets on the Titanic cost $3300.00 or $88000.00 in 2023. Now here's the thing, a housemaid in a grand house such as depicted in the series would have been paid about $30.00 to $40.00 PER YEAR. The rich stayed that way, by not actually paying people properly in the first place. What they did pay their staff, they mostly got straight back in rents and profits from the village shops that they owned too. It is very easy to make a fortune from most decent sized businesses if your staff costs are low. Working estates of the period made good profits from fishing and farming as they kept most of the money from sales of produce for the man at the top. The first world war by necessity, took people out of low paid jobs and introduced them to modern factory work, which as very much better paid. The nett result of this was the destruction of the available labour pool for grand houses. Once the ladies and gentlemen of the working class discovered that they could earn $100.00 per year, for half the hours and from the 1930s onwards, have paid holidays, they all left en-masse and were never seen again! This is what killed off the grand houses in the end. The 1950s and 1960s saw a very large proportion of them pulled down and redeveloped into regular peoples housing and industrial estates. A good proportion of the houses that remain standing, belong to the National Trust. Some are "Theme parks" or are Estates used in commercial operation. Goodwood House is one such estate and "Buckingham Palace" is another such attraction in central London.

Agreed. No real conflict or turmoil. It was fun and all but I was expecting just a bit more depth.
