June and July are my ficuses time to grow! I just gave them a light pruning, but will let them grow crazy the next few months, followed my a harder structural pruning and a repotting if needed in August. I’ve found if Im going on vacation, I plan a pruning before I leave and also wrapping the pots in aluminum foil to extend my daily watering a bit. 3 or 4 days later under the aluminum foil and the inorganic soil is still moist, even on the hottest days.
Thanks for that tip about the aluminum foil - I give that a go this year. I've pruned my Ficus to that timing as well and found it is very beneficial. I normally do my full defoliation when they first come outside...but the weather has been temperamental and suddenly its June (nearly) :)
Useful tips for the next couple of months Xav, they are suggesting the summer is going to be a wet one, I hope not especially the 21st of June for the wedding of Richard and Jessica. There will be no trees on tables my friend.
Love your trees 😍 Meanwhile in Salzburg: My Olive is fully covered with flowers 🌼🌼🌼 Don’t know yet, if it would need an other tree to develop olives. We‘ll see ☺️ Cheers
Hey Xavier, love the videos. Just wanted to comment and say please don’t be so hard on yourself. I know you may be goofing around. But I love your comedic videos and deep wisdom. Keep up the good work man!
I appreciate you telling me that. RU-vid can be a tough place for comments sometimes - especially with the 'couch' experts all getting upset if you act like you are an expert. Hopefully I can keep the balance and not upset too many people. The humour will always be in my videos and those who know me will recognise that part of my harsh chat is deliberately aimed at myself :) Life is far too hard to be too serious aabout aa relaxing hobby after all - thanks for your support :)
Such an action-packed couple of months coming - think I'll have to watch this episode a couple more times!! Will also have to re-acquaint myself with Aug/Sept tasks. My pruning is WAY behind. Cool wet spring = lots of caterpillar and aphid damage - must let trees grow and recover a bit. Have a great time with your early summer work!!
Cheers Sue - it was only during the filming for this that I noticed the caterpillars had attacked my big silver birch AGAIN!!! It is really struggling to get back on its roots...so to speak :)
Great tips as usual. For those of us who aren't home all day, it sounds like organic soil finally gets a thumbs up, because watering twice a day is a stretch and, here in East Tennessee, USA we are likely to have 4 or 5 months ahead of 90 F temps.
I definitely think these ones had too much early spring sun because my cuttings that were in the shade are looking great. Glad to hear yours are thriving too :)
Thank for the summer pointers, I’ll be away for summer holidays so I’ll move my trees into the shade to save them from drought as my daughter will be looking after them.
Hi Xavier, I'm finding out how blisteringly hot your late spring is! Thanks for all those tips. It's great to see your trees too, they're looking lovely and healthy.
Overall the trees are probably in their best condition ever. I do have quite a few Dawn redwoods that missed the early spring sun and look very lush. Thanks for your support as always :)
I have had mine out for the last 4 weeks. It has been a little cooler this year but mine are all looking really good for the fresh air. Once my daytime temps are regualrly above 14C i normally move them...they will come back inside in Sept/Oct.
It is always a risk trying to be funny in thes esort of videos - but that is who I am. I have had quite a few confused people commenting because they skip and therefore miss whatever joke I had just made etc...
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat Mine are going great, all survived the downpour of 24, our club (Bedfordshire Bonsai society) have been invited to join MKs show tomorrow so my desert island bonsai’s additions, the Duchess, Arthur and Danny are going on display as well as Nigel if they are selected. You should pop down as there should be a few clubs involved, get some footage, also if you need a brew, nip down mine one evening 🌳
Good morning ☺️ 31st of May - skid chain mandatory on our Grossglocknerhochalpenstrasse ❄️😅 Thanks Xavier for your lovely warm and sunny bright video ☀️🥰👍 Enjoy your day 😘 Cheers 🙋♀️ Martina
Thanks Dave - I've got a village craft show to prepare for tomorrow. They invited me last year and it was great fun so i am a 'featured' event this year :)
Yes, I know, but I thought that was just obvious to us. Sorry for the miscommunication! Anyway, the forecast has changed again to pouring rain and high winds. England is in for a 30°C heatwave. It said that yesterday. I'm going to stop watching this weather forecast. Haha! Summer's gone here in Scotland anyway. Pouring rain and high winds all morning, scorching hot sun this afternoon dried everything out. I watered, and now the pouring rain and high winds are starting up again, and it will continue throughout tomorrow. 😂
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat Good for you for quitting. I smoked a few times in high school, but only because I was a cheerleader, and cheerleaders were not supposed to smoke. (I was a rebel without a cause)
