This just happened on I-35 Northbound in Gainesville Texas just before exit 499 on March 21st 2022. I parked under the bridge just before the storm hit because I was more afraid of hail damaging the cars on my trailer.

@@alabamajenny8751 Why You Should Always Avoid Underpasses During Tornadoes Why Not to Seek Shelter Under Overpasses During TornadosMany people mistakenly think that a highway overpass provides a safe haven from a tornado. The reality is that an overpass may be one of the worst places to seek shelter from a tornado. Using an overpass for your shelter can put you at a much greater risk of being killed or seriously injured by a tornado. Tornado wind speeds can sometimes exceed 200 mph. These destructive winds produce airborne debris that are blown into and channeled under the overpass where people might be seeking shelter. Varying debris, including dirt, sand and rocks that are moving at incredible speeds can easily penetrate clothing and skin, causing serious injuries or even death. Let’s take a look at the facts: If an overpass is directly in the path of a tornado, the wind could change direction by nearly 180 degrees as the vortex passes. By climbing up higher to get under the overpass, you will be exposed to higher wind speeds and more flying debris. Flying debris become dangerous missiles in the tornado airflow. Most overpasses don’t have girders or support beams for handholds. The narrow passage underneath an overpass could cause an increase in the wind speed under the bridge. Where You Should Shelter Instead If you are on the road, try to drive to the closest sturdy shelter. If that is not an option, pull over and park. You now have two choices: Stay in your car with the seat belt on. Put your head down below the windows, covering your head with your hands and a blanket if possible. If you can get lower than the level of the roadway, exit your car and lie in that area, covering your head with your hands. Your choice should be driven by your specific circumstances. The bottom line is: OVERPASSES DO NOT MAKE SAFE SHELTER AREAS! Check out the video below to see what happens when you shelter under an overpass:
@WildFyr
@WildFyr 2 года назад
I'm glad other people mentioned the fact that you were under an overpass too, I have a friend who is a truck driver and one of his buddies lost his life when driving though a tornado, he decided to park under an overpass thinking it would be safer but when it drew closer it had enough wind speed to cause the overpass to collapse on top of his truck along with all the other people who decided to park there.

I had a tornado form above me in the car as a child, and touch down about 20 feet away, it pushed us a foot over, but nothing else. It formed directly above us, I could see right inside as it began to twist in the clouds, sort of navy and dark grey. The hole inside kept getting larger as it sped up and dropped. It felt like the pressure was just dropped on top of us, and the air outside the circle it created was white. You couldn't see outside it even if you wanted. At some point as it neared the ground, you couldn't see inside the funnel anymore as it twisted away from us in the front and continued on. It was sort of puffy around the edges and it seemed as though the inside was clogged with dark clouds that seemed to spin... but like a sink draining water, it broke up and disappeared for seconds at a time before materializing again. It was almost like a cinnamon roll, except a tornado. Like there was another, smaller, weaker one inside. I only had the ability to watch for about 20 seconds before it hit the ground, at that point the circle around us collapsed and we were unable to see with the air so white. I saw the bottom of it leaning back towards us but headed away from us, peeking out of the white air that was just absolutely rushing at an impossible speed.

If it was a tornado it didn't pass over me, but it was VERY close by, it could've been straight line winds too. It it was blowing so hard you couldn't see the road in front of you, I started trying to find the shoulder of the road without going off. There was a car in front of me I was following his brake lights, when it finally passed we were still in the right lane, fortunately no one came & slammed into me from behind. It lasted about maybe 15/20 seconds or so, but scared the fecal material out of me. 😱

I never would have thought being under the pass was dangerous as so many previous posters have said. I'd have thought being out in the open road would be dangerous. I get the wind tunnel effect, but what about the flying debri and actual tornado? Wouldn't the overpass protect you from those?
@NorthernNewEnglandDashcam
@NorthernNewEnglandDashcam 2 года назад
The overpass enhanced the danger from debris infact. I recommend reading about the 1999 Moore Tornado, which struck multiple overpass and killed/seriously disable many people who tried to hide underneath bridges
@Sirkillsalot22X
@Sirkillsalot22X 2 года назад
It looks deceivingly safe but remember the wind is blowing laterally, not vertically. You'll still be hit by objects flying into the overpass and be blown around just as much as sitting out in a corn field but with the added problem of a bunch of other cars and individuals now trying to take cover under the overpass, thus becoming even more of a hazard. At best, hiding under an overpass just adds a couple dozen mph of wind speed due to a mild wind tunnel effect (Wind slams into the side of the bridge creating a high pressure area there and conversely a low pressure area under the overpass, thus accelerating the wind under the overpass. Think Venturi effect.) If you're stuck in the middle of a highway with no shelter, not even a ditch to crawl in, and there's no way you can drive out of the path, then buckle up and pray. It's an unfortunate reality that can really only be solved by having better and earlier warning systems in place so you're never in that situation to begin with.
@philj8205
@philj8205 2 года назад
The idea is that under an overpass, the more intense winds will send the debris at you just as easily as if you were out in the open but at heightened speed and lethality. If you lay down in a ditch, the debris will fly over you instead.

It comes from advice from actual experts who say never to hide under an overpass during a tornado. The only reason the people in this video were so lucky was because the tornado didn't actually go over the overpass, it was just nearby.
