COMMENT YOUR RESULTS. NO PERFECT PITCH? DEVELOP YOUR RELATIVE PITCH INSTEAD AT www.musictrainingclub.com Become a complete musician
Having perfect pitch could be something that comes from birth or perhaps can be developed. We don't argue about that whichever your opinion is. Once thing is clear, you don't know until you test it. If you get a reasonable 19 out of 20 then you have perfect pitch or an extraordinary relative pitch that allows you to remember the notes you heard even if we tried to clear you memory.

Travis Gerhardt / Perfect pitch doesn't have anything to do with that though. I don't have perfect pitch and I can still hear when people play wrong notes or sing the wrong note. The difference is I can not name what note was played, and which should have been played. If I would have had perfect pitch I would have been able to tell the name of every note.
@makers_lab

Exactly, Travis is describing having a sense of pitch. What I also find interesting is how some people cannot tell whether one note is higher or lower than another, so having no sense of relative pitch whatsoever.

Victor Ibelles Mx are you sure it's remembering how the pitch sounds like ? bcs i have a weird situation i cant tell if i have perfect pitch or not. I got 19/20 . any natural notes i can identify immediately but sharps and flats take me a couple seconds and i have to hear the natural note thats next to it identify it and then know what the pitch is . so do i have perfect pitch ? i learned piano and guitar when i was around 9-11 yrs old. just providing context if it helps
@VictorIbelles
@VictorIbelles 4 года назад
Akenzie yeah, you get perfect pitch around 0-2 years old actually , so if you have it, you already had it when you started to play If you are exposed to musical notes your brain may learn the frequency of a sound (because it thinks it will be useful for language purposes) Maybe you were exposed only to C major music and that’s why you can’t get it with flats/sharps Perfect pitch is instantaneous, if you have to “guess” a sound name , even if you get it right then it’s relative pitch But if you can tell a sound name without thinking about it it’s perfect pitch It’s like seeing colors, you see red and you know it’s red, you don’t have to guess what color it is
@javiehr
@javiehr 4 года назад
Victor Ibelles Mx YESSSSS !!!!! thats how i feel!!!! i dont have to guess for the c major scale. for sharps i use relative pitch thats why it takes a couple seconds ! wowwwww this answers alot ! thank you so muchhh ! 😭😭

how can a person do this without understanding the naming scheme. without being told what letters go with what notes, how can you know? I could understand asking someone to press the key on a keyboard, if they knew the first and last keys, because then keyboard would be a continuum. but you have to have preexisting knowledge of music for a test like this.

I agree. If I had known more about sharps and flats, I would have done a lot better. For some if them, u thought it sounded kind of like a certain note and it said it was a different one, but sharp. I did a little research and it turns out it can also be called the flat of the note I thought it sounded like. For instance, I thought A# sounded sort of like D because A# is also Db (D flat).

7/20, and like 80% of my mistakes were off by a semitone or a tone. I know I don't have perfect pitch but I pause the video at every note played, sing the note for a while and then I can naturally kinda "feel" a range where it belongs. Also I've imprinted the middle C in my head, so sometimes I cheated, sang the note given and then sang a C and kinda identified the interval between them. After a while even my "imprinted C" was a little flat or sharp though, but it guided me decently well. I can be very close to identifying a pitch, but automatically knowing a note is impossible. Still proud of myself though, not that bad for 2.5 years of learning music. EDIT 2 YEARS LATER: Guys, I took the test again. I always liked the "guess the pitch" game because I find it challenging, so I kept guessing notes I heard around me quite a lot. I have imprinted so well the middle C in my head, that now if you randomly ask me to hum a G# for example, I'll jump a perfect fifth from the middle C and add a semitone and I'll probably hum it correctly in a couple of seconds! So, two years of progress made me score 15/20 in this test, and I was guessing the note within the few seconds the video has for you to think. First time I did it, I remember pausing the video to hum and think of the note, again and again. So now I can answer quicker and with less mistakes! 4 out of the 5 wrong notes were a semitone off, and the other one was a tone off. Of course that's not perfect pitch, that's very good tonal memory and the knowledge of some basic intervals, but it can be mistaken as perfect pitch because I guess the note kinda quickly, until I make a mistake, where my cheat-perfect pitch fails haha

Yea I have it the same as you, basically we have good relative pitch and have memorized a certain note to use as a reference. I play the cello and my top string is A, so that’s what I have imprinted in my mind. It usually takes me a minute to figure out the pitch and I have to use that mental reference, which is why I know that I don’t have true perfect pitch.

The "memory clearing" music is so short that I am likely to still "hear" the previous note in my head anyway, but even if I don't, I hear the "memory clearing" music in relation to that note, so it serves as a memory refresher ("oh, there's that B again!") rather than cleaning the memory.

I has perfect pitch, a normal 15 year old. Funny story. I originally discovered that I have it before this video, and I didn't know it was a big deal. Then one day, my choir teacher was playing one of our all state songs, and she kept playing a wrong note. So I pointed out that she was playing a flat and it needed to be a natural. (Or something like that it was a while ago) then she was stuck on another note and I corrected her again. Then called me out and started playing notes on the piano, and told me to name the notes without looking. I got them all right. Then, she called in our clinician that was helping us, and she did it again. Her reaction was simply "holy s***" I kid you not. I was all confused because I didn't know what that meant. I thought it was common sense. Then people in band and choir started noticing and I was like, maybe this is a big deal! Just a little story... I just wanted to share that.

My daughter has absolute perfect pitch. She was listening to a video when I played this in the background for her. I have neither perfect nor relative pitch but accompany her singing. One thing that she has a lot of trouble with is if she's given music in a different key than is being played - like if I know a melody and need the words, give me it in any key and I can sing along. She can't. The difference in key of what's being played vs what she's reading on paper makes her crazy.

+Catgetsdown - Same here. I think perfect pitch is a mixed blessing for musicians. Some things are easier, but other things are much, much harder. For instance, one of the tests on the Violin advanced certificate is to sight-read a passage whilst transposing it by up to a major third (up or down). I always found this extremely difficult as I could tell that the notes I was playing weren't the notes I was reading.

I have perfect pitch. I didn't know what it was until last year. My family always told me I had a good ear, since I could learn stuff by ear. I thought everybody could hear different notes and could identify them. I casually told my flute teacher I could identify notes, and he said, "Oh cool! You have perfect pitch," but didn't tell me how rare it was. My family and I, a year later, were walking through a parking lot when a car horn honked. I said, "That car was honked an A flat, my favorite note!" My mom freaked out and asked how I did that. I said, "I have perfect pitch, you didn't know that? Can't everyone hear notes?" Nope! Apparently 1 in ten thousand have this. I can hear notes, sing a given pitch without assistance, and be able to identify intonation. I cringe to notes not in tune. I'm not boastful about my gift, and I only use it when I need to.

I think it counts because If u r not a perfect pitch, you cannot remember the notes from this pieces . and the second reason, I did it with this way too :D

Same here, perhaps taking time remember what each note is will lift your score

I know G because of superman theme. Last year we were playing it in band and our director spent the whole day repping the first 20 or so measures and I had memorized G by the end

Hah! i do have a piano and it IS a little off. Not by a semitone but that could be it. BTW my 'perfect pitch' is kind of on/off depending on my practice. So I doubt it's the real deal.

The only one I was unsure of was the Ab1, which I perceived as either Ab or A (wasn’t sure). I also was able to note the chord changes and melodies by note in the interludes. It interests me, what it would be like to no longer recognize pitches. But I am deeply grateful for the ability!

5:47 was almost challenging 7:12 was both a C# (lower) and an A (higher) 8:34 was barely closer to D than it was to D# Nonetheless, 20/20

Pianodog I heard those overtones too, but I heard A the strongest (which makes sense, as it's the fundamental) And yeah, for 8:34 I was hearing the timpani overtones pretty strongly too.

Too much overtone at 8:34

Yeah, 8:34 was the only one that I had to pause and think about. Everything else was easy, though I did find higher tones clearer than lower ones.

The test was great, but I would suggest one small adjustment to the bell tone at 7:13 to make it perfect. I would recommend that this tone be changed to a sine wave or any tone that does not have strong overtones because my ear picked up the C# first before the A. Other than that, the test was a blast! 20 out of 20! Thanks for sharing!!

i have a weird situation i cant tell if i have perfect pitch or not. I got 19/20 . any natural notes i can identify immediately but sharps and flats take me a couple seconds and i have to hear the natural note thats next to it, identify it and then know what the pitch is . so do i have perfect pitch ? i learned piano and guitar when i was around 9-11 yrs old. just providing context if it helps

Thank you for the clarification. What about silence as the obsticle? Im trying to approach this this from a holistic pragmatic social standpoint where an infinite variety of aspiring musicians experience similar numbers of everyday sonic environments and backgrounds of combined pitch and rhythm where familiarisation with reading and musicianship are acquired as a mix -as via the mother tongue with language. An example is of my late N Wales father in law singing his tenor line in 4 part male voice harmony at the coal face. The attributes of these skills in public`s perception of them too, is of concern to me.

My director mentioned that I had perfect pitch, so I decided hey why not test it to see if they were right. Got all 20 and my director was right.

20/20. You don't naturally have to have absolute pitch or "memory clearing" (it actually made it worse) I train myself. Now i can do 2 notes randomly played. just think of popular songs that start in that pitch and you'll pretty much have absolute pitch if you keep training!
@ghost_evermore

thats absolute pitch. most people cant even remember one of those notes :/

whats the significance of a "score"? is it a test to measure skill at a point in time and if so what about development/improvement outside of the test ; or nurture? or is there room for allowing change to improve with training
@kirjian

I passed this test perfectly along with every individual note test out there, but somehow I keep doubting myself. In real life, sometimes there are sounds that are "foggy" to me and it takes me a moment to figure out their pitch, and with songs that are harmonically rich I have to pause and think to find out the tonality. I've had a very basic musical training. Do I not have PP, or do I just need more practice?

Yeah, B is a fifth away from E so they sound similar. Same scenario with D and A. Someone might have the same problem with F and C. Th
