We recorded this track during the sessions for our most recent album “Try to Make It Fly”. Apart from the band, it features Justin Ruppel on drums and percussion. We loved it, but it was so stylistically different from the rest of the songs that we had a hard time finding a place in the album sequence (yes, we still think about that). We decided to hold it back and release it as a single on its own.
We wrote "Thinkin Bout Loving Everyone" in Mackinaw, Illinois a couple of years ago. The band had been given an unexpected few days off on tour (due to a Covid cancellation, and we decided to call it a "writing retreat." I (Chris) was up early one morning, having coffee on the front porch of the house we'd rented, and noticed that a turtle dove was sitting in its nest in one of the corners. The nest wasn't very high up, so the bird and its eggs that I imagined were in there were fairly vulnerable. I could have just walked over and grabbed them. The dove seemed to sense that I had taken notice of it and started making as menacing a sound as a dove can make, and occasionally dive-bombed me. I was struck by this act of bravery and it got me thinking first about the sacrifices we make for the ones we love, and then about the power of love in the broader sense.
I got my guitar and moved to the backyard (to be out of the line of fire), where this song had a bit of space to reveal itself. That evening we arranged the vocal parts, and there it was. It's just a simple song about this most universally obvious, important, yet elusive idea. We've been playing it live for the past couple of years, and people seem to like it. We're releasing this on the winter solstice, which is, to me, the most hopeful day of the year.
