The foam wire cutter is the tool that I used the most. I can’t express the importance of having one.

Agree, but don't do what I did and try and save a few $'s by buying a generic hot wire foam cutter. The Woodlands cutter has a deep throat which is needed to slice profile boards in one pass. In this case it's worth it to buy the Woodlands kit. My other most used tool is an Excel K6 heavy duty hobby knife w/#26 blade.

@@cottydry Now we just need a video of all the extra stuff you’re gonna need that WS gives you the absolute minimum of, I.e. paint, ground cover, plaster cloth, etc. LOL The build costs go WAY up!

@@NWarty yes indeed! I did spend quite a bit extra on paints, glues, foam boards and trees. And those ain’t cheap when they have WS printed on them! That’s a good idea for another video!!

Nice little tutorial Dan. I used a lot of the Woodland Scenics components as well to start the process. After a while I started learning that there are cheaper alternatives out there if someone is looking to save some dollars. And by cheaper I don't mean crappy, I just mean cheaper in price and still get the job done. Worth the time to investigate. As I'm doing more to the layout that is what I do now. I think in the future I might do something showing the alternatives that can save someone some dollars, which they then can use to buy more rolling stock or locomotives. Thanks again.

Great tips, Dan. Yeah the glue gun I got is the Gorilla dual temp hot glue gun kit with 30 hot glue sticks. The glue gun kit is only 15 bucks right now and extra sticks are 5 bucks a pack. I bought two extra packs and that was enough for the layout plus some left over in the last pack. The wire cutter kit that I used is just a generic one from Amazon that came with three styles of cutter that were useful. That could've been cheaper but I ordered them all at once along with a power drill the month I started the layout! All in good working order still.
