Thinking of the Fujifilm XT4? Save your money! Consider the XT2, XT3, or XH1.

With the release of the Fuji XT4, it got me thinking if it would be worth the upgrade. I'll be honest, I'm normally weak and I love new gear, but this year I'm turning a new leaf and sticking with my gear until there's a major reason I need a new camera.
Since I already have the Fujifilm XT2, XT3, and XH1, I thought it'd nice to chat about them compared to the new features of the XT4.
While the XT4 looks great, since I already have a full Fuji stable, I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping they'll release something killer next year for the XH2.
And for those considering making the move to Fujifilm, the XT2, XT3 and XH1 are excellent choices right now since you can save a ton of money second hand, so look at your local Kijiji or Craig's List.
I ran into some audio issues, so I promise better audio in the next vid! And a big thanks in advance to the awesome RU-vidrs I follow and borrowed the clips from. Hope that's ok! Please check out their channels!

Kudos to RU-vidrs -- making these videos takes forever! haha Ran into some audio issues, so I promise better audio and planning for the next video. Just needed to get started, you know? I'm sure I missed a lot of good points, so let's discuss and chat about Fuji/camera gear. I love nerding out on this stuff. And thanks to the RU-vidrs I borrowed clips from. Please check out their channel in the description. We're new on here, so if you have ideas for next videos let us know! And if you watched to the end, many thanks fellow camera nerds. Cheers! UPDATE: I was trying the XH1 with the 18-55 and there was no jump in panning, so that's win!

About the sideway flipping screen: on professional videocameras, the screen is also sideways/off center. I think the X-T4 is Fuji's answer to the rising demand of youtubers/vloggers. Yet I see everywhere videos that say to not buy the XT4 and go with the XT3 (I don't mean your video). Most youtube filmmakers go with the first shunned then loved Canon EOS R...so there's really no place for Fuji in the vlogger's camera arsenal. But to add to the screen poblem... when using the camera in a cage, the screen becomes completely unusable if you dont use an external monitor, but not all situations allow for a big rig with external monitor... I use the XH1 for video and photo work and I absolutely love it. Sometimes the size bothers me, but this camera is just so comfortable to hold, with or without batterygrip. XH1+batterygrip+16/23/35mm F2 and you can shoot all day long. My suggestion to people would be: XH1 if you shoot professional handheld videowork and professional photography, XT3 if you shoot video on a gimble, XT4 if you vlog or film yourself at a desk. One last point: I don't get Fuji's product strategy lately. They released the XH1 in early 2018 as a flagship, then 6 months later the XT3 with better specs EXCEPT IBIS was released. Now they release the XT4 with everything better AND IBIS but they still label the XH1 as flagship. The XT4 should have been the XH2 to be honest. If they come out with the XH2, what specs is it going to have? 8K internal, 6K 600fps? A brand-new AF system? More MP? It will take at least two years until the XH2 because of the XT4. Releasing an XH1 body with XT4 specs would be an underwhelming move for a flagship camera, but I digress.

Mind. Art. Creativity. Thx for taking the time to comment! And I agree with you on all points. Like any piece of gear or creating art in general, it’s all subjective you have to think hard about what tools you’ll need to create what you’re creating. And for the Fuji line up, I know eh? It seems like the xh and xt line will just end up being the same as each other spec wise leaving the decision coming down to if you like the more DSLR body/handling over the xt body. I love my xh1 for wedding days where it’s long shoot day’s so the ergonomics is better for video. But I like my xt3 for walk around and photography days. Guess we’ll see what Fuji does! I’m also excited as I hear more 3rd party lenses in the making for Fuji. Should be cool to have some other options. Stay safe! Tuan

Hi man! I'd like to have your opinion since I'm not really sure which one to get. I'm torn between xh1 and xt3, these days, secondhand xh2 with battery grip goes arounr $850 and secondhand xt3 body only goes around $800-$850 and a brand new xt3 sells for $950-$999. I mostly do stills and portraits and I travel a lot using fuji 56mm 1.2 and 18-135mm lenses. can you give me your thoughts? I currently have xt2 and I'm selling it for the upgrade. Thank you!
@AtomicPixel
@AtomicPixel 4 года назад
Kx Jake hmmmm... good question. I think it would come down to ergonomics and weight. The xh1 feels really good in the hand because of the dslr styling and the shutter button is so satisfying. The ibis will also be nice if you want the extra steady shot or wanted to do video here and there. But it is a heavier body. With the xt3 it’ll handle the same as your xt2, just snappier. So if you can handle xh1 then you can see if you like that styled ergonomics. If you like how you’re xt2 handles, then get the xt3. Or, the xt2 is also a nice cam so perhaps wait until the prices of the xt4 drop and then jump on that. I think you’ll feel it’s a bigger upgrade jumping to an xt4 if you can. Your xt2 should be more than capable for now. Just my thoughts! Keep me posted on what you go for. :) -Tuan

I love how quiet the shutter on my X-H1 is when comparing it to my old X-T2. It honestly makes candid photos for me much more doable since people don't tend to notice the camera much when snapping photos.

You could always go full electronic shutter so it's silent, but yes, I know what you mean. The xh1 shutter is also really satisfying so it's like you get to hear it but it's not obtrusive to the rest of the world. :)

A Xt-4 is $200 more than the Xt-3 so I feel for two hundred dollars you're getting a lot more. Flip out screen, 240fps, bigger battery, better weather sealing, etc. The Xt-4 seems like a good deal to me.

I hear ya. I was referring to a used xt3. Then you save about 1k so it’s worth considering. However, if money isn’t an issue or they are comparatively priced where you live, then for sure the xt4 is great. I mean it’s great anyways! It isn't a deal breaker to me, however I wish the X-T line kept the non-flip out screen setup, and the X-H line had the flip out screen. Obviously a screen that is some how and X-T3 screen and a flip out screen in one is the solution that gets approval from both camps.

I didn't buy the XT4 as an upgrade to the XT3 because even though it's a more refined camera, i like the screen of the XT3 as it works better for landscape photography and tripod work with an L Bracket. People that vlog or do video will find the screen more useful on the XT4, also because they are discontinued, it might not be easy to find a XT2 & XT3 that is in good condition. So depending on your budget and useer needs, choose the best fit for your style of photography.

As a photography enthusiast rather than pro, I had decided to finally upgrade my far outdated Canon DSLR. A friend recommended I look at the Fuji XT series. I saw the feature list for the X-T4 and thought that may be an option. After looking at what's on the market in the price range, I finally decided to go full frame with the Sony A7R iii. I wanted the additional resolution for various projects.

I am Nikon dslr commercial shooter, wanted to try mirrorless so two days ago I got myself used XT2 mint condition for about 500$, I was shocked how compact and complicated it is. So far I hate two things about it, the power on/off switch, easy to hit by mistake and the menu system confusing a bit. But XT2 has quick start up comparing to dslr and no lagging as some people say. Now I am looking to buy lenses, still searching for good all-around lens. I tried the 18-55, camera balance not good at all with zoom lenses I think, so I might go for primes F2's, fuji lenses has good build quality but a bit pricey. Thanks for the video

Love your vid. I have the XT-3, and XH-1. The point of the ergonomics between the two is spot on for me. The love the feel of the XH1 in my hands and the shutter button placement. With the shallower grip on the XT3 moving my hand back a little to get to the shutter button makes it feel less secure in my hands. Brought he XT3 about a year ago and wished it had everything in the XT4. I like the option of ibis and the battery life, plus the easier switching to movie mode is a great change. Bottom line for me is if I could get all that in the form of an XH1 I think tha would be for me, so I’ll wait hopefully the XH1 line is going to be updated. Agreed. I don't shoot video -mostly concert, and street, so there really isn't much that the X-T4 brings to the table for me. With the latest firmware upgrade the X-T3 autofocus was improved from really good, to great, and I've heard that there could be yet another firmware upgrade for it in the fall. I'm sure the 4 is going to be a great camera as well, but with IBIS, and the rotating screen, it seems to be marketed squarely at the video people.

Few think closely about the massive advantage of the stills/movie mode switch for true hybrid shooters. For instance, stills photographers who need to also pick up a little b-roll here and their for their event work. The completely isolated menus and settings for each type of shooting to me is money in the bank. Time and fuss saved in the moment, seamless switching, and no worries about controls overlap that either ruins the stills shot or the movie mode. That alone is reason enough to switch, but then there’s IBIS etc. which extends the usefulness of the camera into lower light scenarios, working with longer lenses, on and on. It is easy to look at the spec sheet and say to yourself, “No big deal.” But an extra EV of low light performance here and there puts more shots in the camera, aka more opportunities to make the client happy. Such an easy decision over any previous Fujifilm camera. The only problem will be availability.
@AtomicPixel
@AtomicPixel 4 года назад
Hey BT, thanks for taking the time to comment! I agree with you on the photo/video switch. I had mentioned it, but started cutting things out as the video was getting too long. I was thinking that it is really useful since I have shot a wedding doing both photo and video and did find it cumbersome to switch back and forth so often making sure I was in the right mode. However, I think an even better solution would be to have a separate record button so you can just jump right into video recording. I think the Sony A7 series does this? As for IBIS, I mentioned I loved the improvements they've done to it for the XT4, but what I'm saying is if you could save almost $1500 and buy the XH1 so you'll still get IBIS. And as an update, I was trying the XH1 with the 18-55 and there was no jump in panning, so that's cool!

Atomic Pixel I have two X-H1 cameras, and yes for someone operating on a tight budget, these will provide a lot of the X-T4 functionality assuming you can find one. B&H in the US seems to have a few in stock, but Adorama doesn’t even have one in the used department at the moment. At the same time, just having to cope with that very outdated USB Micro-b connector is a bit of a deal breaker, especially if you do anything tethered. And you’re video modes are much more limited. I already have 2 preorders in place. Ready to move on. As for the separate shutter buttons, I tend to think of the Fujifilm approach as much cleaner. Flip a switch, all the menu context changes, settings fall right into place and the rest of your mechanics stay the same.

BT Hathaway yep, makes sense. Hey, so that means your 2 will hit the used market soon! ;) But agreed, if you have the means, the XT4 will be sweet! Please let me know what you think after you’ve had some time to use it. :) Also, do you think they’ll release an XH2 or nix that line?

Atomic Pixel I think Fujifilm has sent enough signals to confirm that an X-H2 will come, and now that they have gotten IBIS into the X-T line, they are positioned to let the next X-H incorporate a major sensor and processor leap. 6k? 8k? Who knows, but I expect they will design it to leapfrog the S1H. Fingers crossed that they will start to tease the design before the end of the year, but no preorders until 2021 for sure.

The button placement on the x-t-series (apart from it having a smaller grip) is because the camera is made, or at least more fitted for the old rolleiflex type of shooting where you hold the camera Lowe and look down on the screen. Hence why the entire control scheme looks the way it does.

Vasko Nakovski thanks, brother! Agreed, maybe one day when we’re big enough Fuji will send me a copy. That would be so cool! As far as I know, they’re the same sensor (xt30 and xt3) so I would think you’ll get the same results in a small body. Heck, even between the xt3 and xh1 you likely couldn’t tell a difference unless you had them side by side. Put it this way, the xt3 is newer and “better” sensor/video quality, but I’ve been using my xh1 for video projects and xt3 for photo. I’m almost done and edit for an interior design client. I used the xh1 handheld as we toured the home. You’ll see it’s plenty good enough! Don’t be afraid to pick up an xt30 if it’s more in your budget or if you like the form factor better. If you want to buy it seperatly, you won't get it here for less than 800.- Euros. So at the end it makes a price difference between X-H1 and X-T3 (both availible for 1000 Euro) an the x-T4 of 500 Euros. For that amount of money you get IBIS, ultra fast autofocus, very good eye recognition, better menu (love switching from video to photo in the menu) larger batteries, and and...

Sennyah hey! If you have the means, for sure go for the xt4 if you want the best right now. As for the lens, it depends what your needs are. If you need the reach at 80mm, go for it. Question: If I could choose between a used X-H1 in very good shape for around 790 $ or a brand new X-T3 for around 1.030 $ (without taxes), what should I choose? Of course I'm primarily thinking of video skills and IBIS. On the other hand, I would work a lot with a tripod, and I was using Panasonic's G7 (no IBIS) before and always had good footage filming from hand with OIS lenses. So to break the question down: Should I worry that the X-T3 with OIS lenses (e.g. the 18-55 or the 50-230) is worse than the G7 + 14-42 kit lens? Thanks for every answer!
@AtomicPixel
@AtomicPixel 4 года назад
Bernhard Madlener hmmmm.. great question! So maybe in your case if ibis isn’t as important, my next question would be what style of camera/ergonomics do you prefer? The xh1 is bigger, more DSLR style which makes it nicer for longer shoot days because of the grip. If you want the best quality and pixel peep, then you want the xt3 since it technically does have a better sensor and the quality is nicer even in HD. But, I think you’d be hard pressed to notice the difference if not seen side by side. Here’s a vid it shot of my wife for a client product shoot (aija is wearing the black dress outside). All were handheld with the xt3 and 16-55. The orbiting shot around the car was with a gimbal, but handheld other than that. Actually, all the videos for “ooobaby” were xt3 handheld. And yes, I realize some are quite shaken but I wasn’t being super careful with those (girl in black top). I wanted to add some energy to the clips. Russell Rabanal totally understandable. For photography, I’ve never had any issues with autofocus from any of the 3 bodies, but for sure, there is room for improvement when it comes to video. The xt4 seems to have better autofocus and ibis in video, but after my latest wedding day shoot, I don’t think I could rely on autofocus all the time regardless of manufacturer. I think it best to manual focus and lock things off when you can and if likely only use autofocus when on a gimbal. So far fuji has been great for me and it’s also about the feel and ergonomics of it all. Sony is likely a better camera objectively, but it’s too clinical for me. No feels. Haha But you gotta choose the tools you need or are comfortable with!

Great video thanks! Having sold all my DSLR kit 2 years ago, I've been waiting for something like the XT-4 to seal a direction for me. Bought a Canon RP but returned it not liking the sensor, but loving the vari-tilt screen for challenging landscape photos... this was the main reason I had planned to stay Canon (and inexpensive used glass). Just moved to Houston and was finally able to mess around with all the cameras at a Best Buy... loved the XT-3! The size, handling, even eye focus was outstanding as was the menu system. I rented an A7III a few months ago to test that out, and loved everything but the color science and the crazy menu system. The only concern I have with the Fuji system funny enough is the available glass for it, though I think I can find what I need and in some instances at half the cost of FF. Thanks again, great comparisons... might look for a solid used XT-3 when the XT-4 Drops. Would love to see a video on your favorite lenses.

@@AtomicPixel Very cool! I've looked at the Fuji lens lineup, and I think it has more to do with that there is not much there 3rd party. I shoot mostly landscape, Americana, but have 6 kids, so you know which way most of my lenses (and time) are pointed :). Versatility, weight, and lens quality really are the top selling points for me. If there is a small zoom with a constant aperture that can replace 3 primes, I'll go with that. Love the 24-105 on both Sony & Canon Systems, would like even more versatility if image quality is not sacrificed. Also love the kit lens on the Z7... amazing pictures coming out of that. Really nicely done review and guidance. My situation is a little different, but would like your thoughts. Maybe I was an early believer in Fuji - I have an XT-1 and I have been very happy with its size (vs my Dikon D7200), its glass and image quality plus the quiet and good enough video. So I'm now looking to upgrade this year. I like the useful flippy screen and battery life of the XT-4, but I'm seeing an extra $250 off and battery grip for the XT-3 that makes it attractive from a financial point on view. I'm sure either will be a significant improvement over my XT-1, but uncertain which path to take.
@AtomicPixel
@AtomicPixel 4 года назад
Hey man! Thanks for the kind words (means a lot!) and great question. I can relate -- my baby before the Fuji world was a Nikon D7000. First off, you gotta go with your gut. Are you the type of person that will lament later if you didn't spend the extra to get the newest for peace of mind or fear of missing out. If not then let's seriously compare the XT3 vs XT4 based on what the work you and what you hope the camera can do for you. Objectively, these are the things I would ask myself if I were in your shoes: + Do I need a fully articulating screen? Will you be self recording for videos, vacations, family moments. + Or will I be more behind the camera taking photos? + Do I need IBIS? Yes, if you plan to do more video work, not a biggie if you do more photo) I call out the screen as the biggest factor here because I think it changes the way you use the camera the most (we know the XT4 has better specs, but I don't think you'll feel like you missed on image/video quality if you chose an XT3). It goes back to what I mentioned in the video where if you have a purpose for a flip screen, it is truly useful, but if you’re more concerned with being behind the camera, the standard flip screen the XT3 is a better user experience. Think of shooting a photo down low or in portrait mode. With a flip screen it takes up more real estate and time having to flip it out and adjust to the angle you need while looking further left whereas the XT3 is a quick flip up for low shows and the portrait mode 45 degree tilt works a charm with a battery grip. I know this may seem like nit-picking, but wanted to mention for what it’s worth. Perhaps try going to your local camera shop and testing a Fuji they have in store vs a canon or panasonic with an articulating screen. You’ll get a feel for what I’m saying. IBIS. This one is a biggie for me. This is why I end up using my XH1 for my handheld video work over my XT3. Everyone will have different opinions about this topic, but for me, it helps cut down my editing time if I don't have to stabilize every shot in post-produciton. It's just really handy to have, so if you intend to do a lot of video, then XT4 seems like the choice. Now, all that aside, if you’re wiling to hit the used market, then the XT3 can be had a steal which makes it more compelling budget wise over the XT4. I’m seeing them drop right now to the $1400 CAD range! But, if you’re buying new XT3 vs XT4 then I say swipe the credit card and get yourself an XT4 since the delta between the two won’t be enough to mentally justify the savings. For instance, I will regret not spending an extra $300 for a newer camera body, but I can quiet the Gear Acquisition Demon if I saved $1000, you know? Finally, I’ll put it this way - You’re coming from an XT1, so both will be exciting for you. You’ll notice HUGE increase in autofocus speeds, screen clarity, and just overall a zippier, more precise feeling camera. It’ll be like going from a trusty a Honda Civic to BMW M3. The performance you need with everyday usability. Phew, that was a long one. I just get excited about camera gear. haha Let me know what you end up with and would love to hear your thoughts/see a vid with your new baby Fuji. :) Cheers bud, Tuan

@@AtomicPixel Thanks so much for the time you took to provide some great answers and comments Tuan. I do some self-shooting video and I think would really benefit from the flippy screen so that's probably the biggest factor putting the XT-4 top of my list. One quick follow up on the new screen. I'm assuming the LCD screen can be used to compose a shot while it's folded into the body (screen out)? Many reviewers have criticized the inability to be centered when composing via the LCD, but maybe they just mean for low or high level LCD shooting when the XT-3 (or XT-1) tilt screen is helpful.

But if you want small then it’ll the xt30 is perfect. The xt4 would double up as intermediate to pro work if you need it to. Do you have any photos/vids of the gfx or works you’ve done? Would love to see! Thanks for commenting, Ted!

Great video! What do you think about the Sony a6600(1200usd) over the XH1(1000usd with battery grip)? I think they are similar in performance( IBIS, fps, and video capability). The a6600y has better autofocus and battery life. The XH1 has better color and body design.
@AtomicPixel
@AtomicPixel 4 года назад
Kevin Liu I guess I am biased as I do love the Fuji system. Sony’s are great, but in a clinical type of way. Fuji’s make me want to shoot and use the camera. I would also say the XH1 would feel better in the hand and Fuji simulations are great. You are right about better autofocus on the a6600. But I’m sure the xh1 would be just fine. If you can get your hands on both, you’ll know which speaks to you when you hold them. :)

Thanx👍 only problem for me is that Fuji does not offer wide angle fast glass for video. The 16 1.4 autofocus is too loud and the other one is only f2.8.
@AtomicPixel
@AtomicPixel 4 года назад
True, true. Although, I think the 16mm 2.8 would be good enough. When doing video I rarely shoot lower than 2.8. If you want even wider you could try the Rokinon 12mm f2. I have that lens and it’s nice, but is manual focus. Or even the 14mm 2.8?
@goal7779
@goal7779 4 года назад
Atomic Pixel Thanx. Can you maybe demonstrate the low light performance at F2.8? on the xh1 vs xt3. Im thinking of switching to canon for that RF 15-35. Fuji just does nog offer anything like that at the moment.

@@goal7779 For sure! I'll add it to the production list. Stay tuned! :) But, as I tell all my friends, go to a shop and hold both the cameras you're considering. Once you feel, touch and handle the camera a bit then you'll get a better sense of which camera speaks to you. No point in getting a camera if it doesn't feel fun or excites you to go create, you know? Specs aren't everything. All the cameras these days are awesome, so you won't miss out much on the quality of images/footage, but more so what feels good in the hand and is fun to shoot with. It's all personal preference. Cheers!

Looking to upgrade my XT1 would the XT2 be a worthy upgrade or jump to XT3?

Ryan Scanlon I think you might as well go for the xt3. It’ll feel like a worthy upgrade. :)
@quiver99

Ryan Scanlon stick to the X-T2. I had the X-T1 as well, but the X-T2 is the camera which marks the end if the road for technical upgrade. It’s just stellar and I own it.

I found the xt4 just overspeced for my personal needs. It is a fantastic camera, but for its price I would rather buy a mint 2nd hand XH1 (and now it's just a right time to look for such bargain) together with a couple of nice lenses. The trick is to buy not the best over all camera, but rather the best for you personally.

Ya, exactly! I love my xh1. I really hope they make an xh2 with better ibis. I also think I’m loving the DSLR/deeper grip style better than xt series

@AtomicPixel
@AtomicPixel 4 года назад
TheCoomer glad you found it helpful! :) I don’t think the average person would be able to tell the difference of a photo from the xt2 all the way to xpro3/xt4. All the camera are fantastic and by the time you edit, it all comes out the same. So, go with whatever inspires you to shoot and use more. The more fun it is for you then the more you’ll use it! @@AtomicPixel Thank you, I have decided on the Xh1 as in the UK you can get it for £619 presently or 699 refurbished with the Grip. I was too busy being a technical photographer rather than an actual one and you made me realise that the jump from contrast only focus and noise at 3200 iso. To something that can actually focus is perfect. Plus like you say, all my photos would go on Instagram or RU-vid. Even wedding photos as a hobby, it all goes on Facebook. With the presets and Wifi in the camera transferring them should be alot easier too (I need a computer that can handle video editing so having it sorted in camera is fantastic). Thank you for your help, and thank you for all your great videos

TheCoomer That’s awesome! And then with the extra cash you can decide on some nice lenses! :) And that’s just it - unless you plan on printing huge physical images, you don’t need to worry about the megapixels and all the little stuff. Just enjoy creating.

Skvora Limited Media Hey! Yep, I’ve always used apsc for my interior photography work. Started with a Nikon d7000. With the Fuji I use the rokinon 12mm and the 16-56. You dont always have to go wide. 16mm has been great for interior design shots.

@AtomicPixel
@AtomicPixel 4 года назад
Oooo, that's a nice combo! How are you liking the Z6? I started out with Nikon, so I'll always like them. :) And would you be using the XT3 as a secondary camera or as a separate shooter? I ask because I found it a lot easier for colour grading and workfow if I used cameras from the same manufacturer if I was using multiple cameras for a shoot. Same colour science and ease of you use so my mind doesn't have to switch back and forth to operate different camera bodies. Just wanted to point that out! :) -Tuan

I had the Xt3 and sold it. I do mostly portrait and detail shots, and I need to crop a lot to deliver highlights of my shots. With the XT3 the RAW file had this worm looking grain when zooming in up close. Does anyone know if that was fix on the camera or is it something that has to do with Lightroom? I don't think I recall this issue with Jpgs though that by the way look great SOOC
@AtomicPixel
@AtomicPixel 4 года назад
Gaston Shutters Hey Gaston! I hear ya. It def is an issue, although it seems to be with Lightroom as you don’t see the problem is Capture One. That being said, LR is part of my workflow so you would think Adobe or Fuji would fix it. I think issues like this is why some fans say to switch to the Bayer sensor bc the raw files are easier to work with. My work around with the files in LR is to put the sharpening mask way up so it just captures the edges or I don’t sharpen at all. I don’t like my images to be overly sharpened and if I want a sharper look, I do it with a touch of texture or clarity increase. So what do you shoot with these days?
@thebikingphotographer3042
@thebikingphotographer3042 4 года назад
That's just LR, there are tuns of vicei's fot that... With a raw converter plugin such as iridient, there's no issue at all. Even with the new firmware, i barely have to convert and i'm amacrophotographer, so cropping and details are my main issues. The XT-3 is a piece of magic, i even bought te XT-30 as back-up and sometimes i find that one even better :-)
