Wow, just did this on t430 (little rubbing with a dry sponge first), and surprisingly it turned out AMAZING! :D Not sticky and greasy at all (did not expect this). Thanks a lot!

Thinkpads aren't faded plastic, they are rubberized paint. Its a nice trick but doesn't remove scratches etc. You can remove the rubberized coating if you take the computer apart, and sit the panels in car brake fluid until it starts to come off. I removed it off my 600E this way and then painted it candy apple red with 6 coats of clear. Automotive paint with primer etc. Looked amazing!

I've had a Thinkpad X41 since 2006, which was used daily until about 2017. What I noticed was that the rubber paint turned sticky, and eventually started to rub off quite easily. I think this was caused by longterm exposure to natural skin oils. So, in my opinion, using any sort of cream or lotion as suggested in this video, could risk degradation of the remaining original finish. Be warned..

Rubber degrades from the lack of lubrication (your hand oils probably did not help)

Skin creme will soon dry out and before then, it won’t be desirable to touch.
@olympicfan2
@olympicfan2 4 года назад
I use boiled linseed oil instead of skin cream. First becaus skin cream is fluid and makes the cover darker, second and most importantly it´s soft. Linseed oil hardenes and makes the cover really solid and protects it.

I might give this a try. It just looks too good to be true. How is the feel of the surface after the hand cream? Isn't it sticky, attracts dust easily?
@panoramacircle3281
@panoramacircle3281 6 лет назад
You can search for "restore faded plastic" for many methods and products, but they are all essentially similar, applying oil to the rubber/plastic until it has soaked itself completely. It wasn't sticky if you wipe it off completely with a fresh towel.
