Well done folks - this video also covers removing the GSM card and switching off the internal battery before opening the chassis - tiny details other videos seem to leave out.
Thank you LS! Great video with clear, concise instructions. Just installed a new 1.0 TB SSD in my Lenovo T440s. I'm not sure who's happier... me or my laptop. Salome!
Thank you so much for this! I did the job on a different laptop then what's shown, but knowing I had to lift the hard drive out not just push it straight out helped me a lot
Just completed this myself. Some feedback 1) The screws do NOT come out! I made this mistake, and was looking for a magnetic screwdriver to take them out with. They simply 'loosen' - they do NOT come out. 2) Don't under-estimate how difficult it is to remove the bezel. It requires a bit of force, but not too much. 3) The battery plug on the motherboard is very fiddly. 4) SSD screw, make sure you use tweezers or something to grab it as you take it out / put it back in - it dropped in the motherboard, out and around a few times. 5) (If you decided to) You won't be able to boot from external USB source - e.g. the cloned or original disk in the USB SATA connector. Mine brought up the blue screen, even on a perfectly cloned SSD. I had to put the drive in the case before it would load. Don't know why this was.
Thanks for the video but I wanna ask you (I turned off my laptop thinkpad t450 while it was doing the update than the windows won't inter what shall I do???
Hi Doctor Chef, thanks for reaching us out. We're sorry to know about your trouble. Did you get an error message? Do you still see any lights on the device? We'll wait for your reply. Fraineee_Lenovo
After a clean install of windows using OEM disc, what's the fastest way to install all the Lenovo software and drivers? Do I have to install one by one?
Hi Kamal. Thanks for writing in. It is important to disable the built in battery before replacing any hardware components to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD). Learn more about electrostatic discharge (ESD) here: lnv.gy/31xUucC. Auxen_Lenovo
Do you have a video on replacing the HDD with a SSD on the T410? I'm looking to upgrade to a SSD, but things have changed since the windows 95/98 days when I worked on computers. My knowledge on laptops is very limited. I know on the T410 there's a little bay on the side of the machine where the current drive resides, so access is simple. However, I'd like to clone my current drive to the new SSD when I get it. Plus I don't believe all of the Lenovo utilities and software is installed on the machine and I'd like to get that installed first before doing the drive clone. Your help would be appreciated.
+William Todd (williamtodd) I would recommend you get a SATA wire with USB on the other end. Some SSDs come with full options for cloning your drive, for instance, the last SSD I bought came with this kit www.amazon.com/Apricorn-Notebook-Upgrade-Connection-ASW-USB3-25/dp/B005C983NA . While that's the easiest option, it also costs 30 dollars if your SSD didn't come with it. Rescue and Recovery or the factory recovery disks are the only options that Lenovo offers that would be capable of doing what you want. In your position I would probably contact Lenovo Support.
Lenovo Service Great thank you for your help. I'll give Lenovo a call and see how much money they want for restore discs. Personally I'd like to get the laptop back to factory specs. If that's the case maybe I wouldn't need to clone the drive, just start from scratch?
Personally, I prefer to back up my personal stuff and do clean installs whenever possible. If you want the laptop back to factory specs then getting the support discs is probably the best option. Good luck!
Lenovo Service Just ordered the restore discs. Thanks. I want to start from scratch and get everything back to factory. Really like the laptop, very simple, easy to work on from what I understand, and easily upgraded. I didn't want a fancy laptop and the older T-series laptops seem to be pretty good machines.
I like the old ThinkPad models too, and yes, they are pretty easy to work on. If you go to this page lenovolearning.bhivesoft.com/bhive/t/1004/sessions_details_public.jsp?content_id=7977 and hit take course and navigate to the CRU and FRU removal sections, you can see the removal and replacement process of every individual part. This is what we do, and as far as I'm aware no other company offers replacement videos like these.
got my cover off yesterday and still trying to get some black tape out so i can take that board out so i can get big hardrive in the spot i found.once done i can get small in the other place and hopefully have my computer running to play games including ones i got.this is not easy my first time working on laptops, my dad won't work on computers anymore which sucks for me and i know best buy can do it but you have to pay them some money to do it.
Hi Oriol Pena! Thanks for reaching out, and we hope you're doing well. Kindly share with us the Machine Type Model of your machine, so we can have a closer look. It's usually printed on the label on the side or back of the product. We'd like to help. Rai_Lenovo
Thanks for sharing the MTM of your machine. Yes, you can switch to SSD. You may check this thread lnv.gy/3XN5b7F for more info. Please let us know if you have any questions. Rai_Lenovo
First of all, thx. I've already changed to SSD and now it is faster. Now, is it possible to add more RAM. I think there is another slot to insert one more, but if I want to buy new ones, which models are accepted?
+Kite Nine You can create a copy of the Recovery Discs using Create Rescue Media on a Lenovo preloaded Windows 7 system. Or you can follow the Windows 8 process to create Recovery Media support.lenovo.com/en/documents/ht076024 on a Lenovo preloaded Windows 8 system. If either of these methods are unavailable, you can call Lenovo support and order Recovery Discs for your system.
@lenovosupport i got t440 - want to replace HDD with SSD please, advice which SSD model best suits either M1 or M2. question: what will happen if pull HDD without OS back up and replace it with SSD.
Hi there, Venkatesh! We're sorry for the late response. You may check the tested and compatible SSD from here lnv.gy/2JMzDKl. In addition, if you will pull out the HDD and replace it with SSD, make sure that the SSD is the same size with the HDD, and you need to reinstall the OS in the SSD as well. You may check the full specs of the thinkPad T440 here lnv.gy/2JMa38x. Let us know if you have any other concern. Thanks you for reaching our support! -Chris_Lenovo
Great video. Thanks. Question: Is the SSD in the T440s a 7mm, or do I need a 9.5mm adapter to go with it, and if so, are these normally included by default in retail versions?
Hi Taflukta! Thanks for reaching us. You have a good question there. You can upgrade the SSD of this model via the WLAN card (M.2 SSD) or in the hard drive slot (7mm). You can also check the specification here for more info lnv.gy/2HRqtys Hector_Lenovo
If you're going to replace the current storage (HDD slot) with an HDD, you can use either a 7mm or 9mm HDD as it mentions here lnv.gy/2HVk2L7 that some variant of this model has either of the two SSD sizes. For SSD (HDD slot), it's only 7mm. Hector_Lenovo
I replaced the hard drive and added some RAM following these instructions. It went smoothly except the bottom assembly won't snap back on on the side of all the ports. I installed a 7mm crucial SSD. I noticed the hard drive retaining clip was different than the one in the video, it seem to have two plastic piece flush with either the top or bottom side of the hard drive.. which way should this be oriented? has this happened to anyone else?
Based on this documentation, the M.2 SSD is optional. You can DM us the serial number on our Twitter or Facebook account so we could check. lnv.gy/2q30NqD As for the memory, the max is 12 GB. It only has one sodimm socket. PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3L, non-parity, dual-channel capable. Nick_Lenovo
my own is thinkpad t440 Lenovo Thinkpad T440 20B6 - Ultrabook - Core I7 , and 128 ssd drive , i want to ask , can i add hardisk to save data and ssd for os ?
Hi Romanda! Thanks for reaching us for support. Upon checking, yes you can add a Hard drive and transfer the OS to the SSD. For more information regarding with the compatible HDD's and SSD's click on this link lnv.gy/2AB9dpN. Let us know if you need anything else. Erica_Lenovo

@Kite Nine It will be difficult to answer your question without some more specific information. Does your old drive still function and you are just upgrading the drive, or did your old drive fail and you are replacing it?
+Lenovo Service You can create a copy of the Recovery Discs using Create Rescue Media on a Lenovo preloaded Windows 7 system. Or you can follow the Windows 8 process to create Recovery Media support.lenovo.com/en/documents/ht076024 on a Lenovo preloaded Windows 8 system. Hi ImNotLxgit. Thanks for writing in. Are you trying to run a hardware scan? If yes then you may use the Lenovo Vantage to test the hardware components. You may download and learn more about the Lenovo Vantage here: lnv.gy/2KwZBVn. Let us know if you need additional information. Auxen_Lenovo
I've gotten a few blue screen error messages on my T510, u think my drive is about to crash? And what drive should I replace it with? and do the drives come with anything on them like OS? thanks
Drives do not come with the operating system pre-installed. You can order recovery discs here: support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/migr-4m7hwz that you can use to install.
Hi Abhi Dutta. Thanks for writing in. Yes, you may use the Sandisk X400 SSD, but if you're using a hard drive, you'll be needing to take the hard drive out and change it to the Sandisk X400. If you'd like to have both hard drive and an SSD, you need to use an M.2 SSD. Let us know if you need further help. We'd be glad to assist you. Have a nice day. Ash_Lenovo
Hi there, SL bro! Thank you for reaching our support! As we were checking here, both T440 and T450 uses a flathead screw, so you need to use a flathead screwdriver. You can check out the hardware maintenance manual for the T440 here lnv.gy/31PzKfB (page 69) and T450 lnv.gy/2MRZTGg (page 73) and learn how to replace the hard disk drive. -Chris_Lenovo
I have the t440s with an Intel i5. Everything has been upgraded besides the processor, so I don't want to buy a new laptop... I do believe that the cpu is soldered down to the motherboard, so I can't just snap on an i7. Would buying a new motherboard with an i7 cpu and replacing my motherboard with the new one work? I don't see why it wouldn't...
Hi James. Thanks for reaching out. It is correct that the CPU is soldered on the motherboard as per the system hardware maintenance manual. lnv.gy/2wwi9KE (page 74). You may upgrade the CPU to i7 buy replacing the motherboard, but you are limited to i7-4600U. You may check this link for reference: lnv.gy/2ww0LW4. Let us know if you need additional information. Hi George! If you will be replacing the SSD from existing drive, yes, you will lose it because you would need to install the software to the new SSD but you may install the same OS again after replacing it. Arjay_Lenovo
just gotta screw the cover on , did put cd rom back first and then small hardrive in the first spot on the side then cover on it.i will have best buy put big hardrive in and hopefully when done with everything else when battery pack in again that it turns on boots everything up lol.
Hi Sergio! Normally the SSD uses the same slot as the HDD. However, we just need to confirm which model specific Thinkpad model are your referring to? Reggie_Lenovo
Hi @Kalonji Williams ! Thanks for writing in. Due to the Limitation of the Motherboard of these models, the graphics card can't be replaced. Let us know if you have further questions. Hector_Lenovo
Hi j williams! Thank you for reaching us for support. If you are using a Thinkpad, see this article on how to access BIOS: lnv.gy/2ZcBYss. If Ideapad, click this link: lnv.gy/2Z4Vrej Matt_lenovo

@@LenovoSupport i figured it out using the restart setting and then pressing f1, I think the problem was that the computer booted to quickly the normal way
Hi! Thanks for writing in. The hinge might be stuck, so we highly recommend having the laptop repaired. You can get the contact details of our local support here lnv.gy/3xMmdFP (Enter serial number > Select Region), or locate the nearest service center here lnv.gy/37L4zHM (Enter location), for repair options. Hector_Lenovo
Do you notice the issue on the hinge when you remove the bottom cover as instructed on the video, or when you open the actual laptop lid? If it's the laptop lid, we recommend not forcing it, as it may damage the cover, as well as the display. It is best to have the laptop checked at the nearest service center, for repair options.
